Epic Fight Mod Guide: Souls-Like Combat, New Weapons, Skills & Boss Fights

Epic Fight replaces Minecraft's click-to-swing combat with a Souls-like system built around stamina, combo chains, dodging, guarding, and weapon charge. Five new weapon categories, over two dozen learnable skills, a rare Uchigatana hidden in temples, and dramatically enhanced boss encounters turn every fight into a decision-making challenge.

Overview

Epic Fight overhauls Minecraft combat at its core. Instead of spamming left-click, players manage a Stamina bar, build up Weapon Charge by landing hits, dodge incoming attacks with a dedicated key, and guard or parry from the front. Every weapon now has a unique moveset, attack speed, and a special Innate Skill that unlocks when the Weapon Charge bar fills.

The mod adds five entirely new weapon categories, each available in all six material tiers (Wood through Netherite): the Greatsword, Spear, Longsword, Tachi, and Dagger. It also introduces the Uchigatana, a rare katana found only in Desert and Jungle Temples, along with the Glove for unarmed combat. A Stray Cloth armor set provides lightweight protection, and Skill Books scattered through the world unlock over two dozen learnable abilities. Vanilla boss fights against the Wither and Ender Dragon gain entirely new mechanics and attack phases.

All items and crafting recipes added by Epic Fight are available through the Items and Recipes tabs on this page.

ℹ️Two Modes

Epic Fight adds a Combat Mode and a Mining Mode. Press R (default) to toggle between them. In Combat Mode, Epic Fight animations and mechanics are active. In Mining Mode, vanilla behavior is restored, making block breaking and interactions easier. The initial mode for new players can be set via the initialMode game rule.

Getting Started

  1. 1

Craft Your First Epic Fight Weapon

The moment you load in, vanilla weapons still work, but you are missing out on the new movesets. Craft an Iron Dagger or Iron Spear as your first dedicated combat weapon. The Dagger is cheap and fast, giving you a feel for the attack rhythm before committing to heavier weapons.

  2. 2

    Learn Your Stamina Bar

A green Stamina bar appears on your HUD in Combat Mode. Attacking, dodging, and guarding all consume Stamina. Running out leaves you unable to dodge or guard until it regenerates. Get comfortable with how quickly Stamina drains before picking a fight with anything dangerous.

  3. 3

    Practice Dodging and Guarding

Use the Dodge key (default: Left Shift in Combat Mode) to roll clear of incoming attacks. Dodging evades all damage during the roll animation. Right-clicking while a weapon that supports guarding is held activates the Guard, blocking frontal damage at the cost of Stamina. Both skills can be upgraded via Skill Books later.

  4. 4

Build Weapon Charge and Use Innate Skills

Every weapon has a Weapon Charge meter that fills as you land hits on enemies. When the meter is full, pressing the Weapon Innate Skill key (default: V) fires off the weapon's special attack. Each weapon type has a unique Innate Skill, from the Greatsword's charged cleave to the Dagger's instability-stacking execution combo.

  5. 5

    Collect Skill Books

Skill Books drop from hostile mobs and appear in dungeon chest loot. Each Skill Book teaches one learnable skill when right-clicked. Open the Skill Editor (default: G) to assign skills to your Dodge, Guard, Passive, and Mobility slots. Start by acquiring Roll or Step for a reliable dodge, then work toward Guard and passive combat skills.

Combat Mechanics

Stamina

Stamina is the core resource of Epic Fight combat. Every attack, dodge, and guard action drains the bar. Heavier weapons consume more Stamina per swing. If Stamina is fully depleted, the player cannot dodge or guard until it regenerates. The Passive skill Forbidden Strength allows Stamina-cost actions to drain Health instead when Stamina is empty, which can save your life in a tight spot.

Weapon Charge

Each weapon has a Charge meter displayed in the HUD. Landing hits on enemies fills the meter. When full, pressing the Weapon Innate Skill key unleashes the weapon's signature attack. The Death Harvest passive refills Weapon Charge when killing enemies with an Innate Skill, letting aggressive players chain powerful skills back-to-back. The Hyper Vitality passive uses Stamina as a substitute for Weapon Charge when firing skills, so you can keep using weapon skills even when Weapon Charge has not been built up.

Dodge and Stun

Dodging grants complete invulnerability during the roll animation. Roll (full dodge) and Step (shorter slide) are the two base Dodge skills, with Roll having a larger evasion window. More advanced Dodge skills like Tumble can be unlocked from Skill Books. Enemies can apply stun states to players, ranging from a brief Short Stun to a Knockdown that leaves the player on the ground. The Impact attribute on weapons increases stun duration on enemies hit.

Lock-On

Pressing the Lock-On key (default: Middle Mouse Button) snaps the camera to the nearest enemy and keeps it centered on that target. While locked on, dedicated target-cycle keys (configurable) switch the lock between nearby targets. Lock-On is essential for multi-enemy fights and critical for landing Innate Skills that require tight positioning.

⚠️Guard Stun

Blocking a hit while guarding causes a brief stun that interrupts the player's attack. Learning the Parrying skill upgrades Guard to allow timed blocks that negate this stun entirely and even deflect ranged attacks. Parrying requires the Guard skill to already be equipped before it can be learned.

New Weapon Types

Epic Fight introduces five new weapon categories alongside the vanilla Sword, Axe, and Trident. Each type has a completely distinct moveset, attack speed, and Innate Skill. All five are craftable at a Crafting Table using a vanilla sword of the same material as the base ingredient, and each can be upgraded to Netherite at a Smithing Table. The comparison below uses Diamond tier, which is when most players commit to a weapon style.

Greatsword

The Greatsword is Epic Fight's hardest-hitting weapon, reaching 15 damage per hit at Diamond tier (7.5 hearts) and 16 damage with Netherite (8 hearts). It attacks at about 1.0 swing per second and applies a small permanent movement speed penalty while held. It is a two-handed weapon and cannot be used in the offhand.

Its Innate Skills are Steel Whirlwind, a forward charge cleave that can be held down to increase both range and speed, and The Guillotine, an execution strike that kills enemies outright when they fall below a certain Health threshold.

Spear

The Spear deals 6 damage at Iron tier (3 hearts) and 7 at Diamond (3.5 hearts), with an attack speed of about 1.2 swings per second. Its reach is extended compared to swords, making it excellent for keeping distance. Heartpiercer thrusts three times in rapid succession, and Grasping Spire impales the target to pull it toward the player, then launches it backward based on how many enemies were caught.

Longsword

The Longsword sits between the Greatsword and Spear in damage, hitting for 7 at Iron (3.5 hearts) and 8 at Diamond (4 hearts). It favors a defensive, counter-punching playstyle. Liechtenauer puts the player in a Guard Stance for several seconds, deflecting all frontal attacks while the player keeps swinging. Killing enemies during the stance extends its duration.

Tachi

The Tachi has identical base stats to the Longsword but plays very differently. Its Innate Skill, Dancing Edge, unleashes a three-hit lethal flourish. The Tachi suits aggressive combo players who want to chain basic attacks into the Dancing Edge burst, then immediately reset the Weapon Charge with the Death Harvest passive.

Dagger

The Dagger deals the lowest raw damage per hit at 4 damage (2 hearts) for Iron tier and 5 at Diamond, but attacks at 2.4 swings per second and is a One-Handed weapon suitable for dual wielding. Eviscerate stabs deep and rips the dagger out for critical follow-up damage. Blade Rush applies the Instability status effect; reaching 3 stacks of Instability executes the target outright.

Special Weapons

Uchigatana

The Uchigatana is the most iconic weapon in the mod and cannot be crafted. It is found exclusively inside Desert Temple and Jungle Temple chests, making it a mid-game treasure hunt reward. It deals 7 damage (3.5 hearts) per hit at 2.0 swings per second, with 1625 durability (matching Diamond tier) and an enchantability of 22. The Uchigatana is repaired with Iron Bars at an Anvil.

Its passive mechanic sets it apart: if the player goes 5 seconds without attacking, the Uchigatana sheathes itself. The next attack after sheathing is powered up, making it ideal for an ambush or opener before retreating into a defensive pattern. Its Innate Skill is Battojutsu, a blinding-speed quickdraw slash that launches the player forward if activated while sprinting, slicing through enemies in the path.

Glove

The Glove is Epic Fight's fist weapon, dealing 3 damage (1.5 hearts) with no attack speed penalty, meaning it attacks at the maximum base rate. With 1625 durability and an enchantability of 22, it punches above its weight for an unarmed build. The Glove is repaired with Iron Nuggets.

Bokken

The Bokken is a wooden training sword with the same stats as a standard Wooden Sword: 4 attack damage (2 hearts), matching the Uchigatana's attack animations but without any special properties. It serves as an early-game practice weapon to get familiar with sword movesets before investing in materials.

💡Finding the Uchigatana

The Uchigatana spawns in Desert Temple and Jungle Temple chests, similar to how Skill Books are found. Bringing a Looting-enchanted weapon when raiding these structures maximizes item drops from the mobs guarding them, though the Uchigatana itself is a chest find, not a mob drop.

Stray Cloth Armor

Epic Fight adds a lightweight cloth armor set consisting of the Stray Hat, Stray Robe, and Stray Pants. There is no Boots piece. The set cannot be crafted. Stray skeletons spawn wearing all three pieces, and each piece can drop when you kill one. All three pieces are repaired with String at an Anvil.

With 6 total armor points and no armor toughness, the Stray Cloth set provides roughly Leather-tier protection. Its enchantability of 15 matches Leather armor, making it reasonably easy to enchant. The set suits builds that prioritize dodge-based evasion over raw damage reduction, where the lighter weight is less of a Stamina burden during extended fights.

The Skills System

Skills are acquired from Skill Books dropped by hostile mobs or found in dungeon chests. Right-clicking a Skill Book in your inventory learns the skill permanently. Open the Skill Editor (default: G) to assign learned skills to your available skill slots: one Dodge slot, one Guard slot, three Passive slots, one Mobility slot, and one Identity slot. Skills cannot be freely swapped mid-fight; replacing a skill in a slot triggers a cooldown timer.

Dodge Skills

Roll performs a full directional roll with a wide invincibility window and is the standard choice for most builds. Step is a shorter, faster slide that covers less distance but recovers more quickly. Both completely evade incoming attacks during the active evasion frames.

Guard Skills

Guard is the base block, right-click to hold it up against frontal attacks while draining Stamina. Parrying upgrades the Guard to allow perfectly-timed deflections that negate stamina loss and intercept even ranged projectiles. Impact Guard further reduces guard penalty, drains less Stamina per block, and allows guarding against explosions, fire, magic, and projectiles, absorbing a portion of that damage rather than all of it.

Passive Skills

Three passive slots accept a wide variety of combat modifiers. Berserker gains attack damage and speed for each percent of missing Health, making it deadly when on the back foot. Vengeance increases damage against any enemy that has recently hurt the player. Bonebreaker stacks a bonus against the same target the more the player hits it, rewarding focused single-target pressure. Swordmaster provides a flat attack speed increase at all times.

Utility passives include Adrenaline Fiend (stamina regen starts immediately on kill), Stamina Pillager (restores missing stamina on kill), Technician (regen stamina by dodging just before an attack lands), Adaptive Skin (gain damage resistance against the damage type you were most recently hit by), Endurance (stun resistance after absorbing a hit during an attack windup), and Emergency Escape (allows dodging even when hit or out of Stamina).

Mobility Skills

Meteor Slam crashes the player into the ground from height, dealing more damage the higher the fall; any fall damage exceeding the Stamina limit is taken as Health damage. Demolition Leap launches the player in a targeted direction and reduces the next fall damage by 50%. Demolition Leap can only be acquired after defeating the Ender Dragon. Phantom Ascent grants additional mid-air jumps, and Revelation builds counter stacks from blocking, parrying, and dodging to enable a powerful counter strike.

Best Weapons in Epic Fight

1

Netherite Greatsword

Burst damage, two-handed
Damage16 (8 hearts)Speed~0.95/sec

The highest raw damage per swing in the mod at 16 per hit. The Guillotine execution finisher and Steel Whirlwind cleave make it devastating in boss fights where burst damage windows matter. The movement speed penalty is real but manageable with good dodge timing.

2

Uchigatana

Temple loot, balanced stats
Damage7 (3.5 hearts)Speed2.0/sec

The Uchigatana's sheathe mechanic rewards patience and positioning in a way no other weapon does. Battojutsu's sprint dash covers huge ground while dealing serious damage. At 2.0 swings per second with 7 damage, it outdamages Spears and matches Diamond Longswords while feeling faster. It cannot be crafted, making it a prestige find.

3

Netherite Dagger

Speed, dual wield, execution
Damage6 (3 hearts)Speed2.4/sec

Two Netherite Daggers in a dual-wield setup applies both the Blade Rush Instability stacks and the Eviscerate critical rip extremely fast. At 2.4 swings per second, the Dagger also builds Weapon Charge faster than any two-handed weapon, meaning Innate Skills fire more frequently. Blade Rush's 3-stack execution outright kills many mobs without needing to wear them down.

4

Netherite Longsword

Defense and sustained DPS
Damage9 (4.5 hearts)Speed1.2/sec

The Liechtenauer Guard Stance is the strongest defensive skill in the game. Deflecting every frontal hit while continuing to attack, and extending the stance by getting kills, makes the Netherite Longsword the top choice for players who take more hits than average or face bosses with overwhelming attack patterns.

5

Netherite Spear

Reach, crowd control
Damage8 (4 hearts)Speed1.2/sec

Grasping Spire is uniquely powerful in mob-dense areas. Impaling one enemy and knocking it back harder the more enemies are caught provides crowd-control that no other weapon type offers. The extended reach keeps the player safer against fast-moving mobs than any sword-class weapon at the same damage output.

Vanilla Weapon Compatibility

Epic Fight does not abandon vanilla weapons. Every existing item category gets its own moveset and Innate Skill. Vanilla Swords gain Sweeping Edge (a cleave hit on nearby enemies) and Rushing Tempo (an extra strike tagged onto the end of each basic attack, stackable multiple times). Axes, Hoes, Pickaxes, and Shovels all receive their own attack animations and combat behaviors.

The Trident gains three powerful Innate Skills: Wrathful Lightning (calls down lightning to smite nearby enemies with a chance to change the weather), Tsunami (a forward dash that travels farther while raining or underwater), and Everlasting Allegiance (recalls a thrown Trident through all enemies in its return path, dealing damage to each). The Trident becomes a serious combat weapon rather than a gimmick throw item.

Bows and crossbows are classified as Ranged weapons and receive their own set of combat behaviors. The Item Category screen in Settings lets players manually classify any item as either a Combat tool or a Mining tool, controlling whether it triggers Epic Fight animations or vanilla behavior when held.

Enhanced Boss Fights

Epic Fight dramatically overhauls the Wither and Ender Dragon encounters, adding new phases, new attacks, and new summoned entities that vanilla Minecraft completely lacks. Both fights reward the stamina and dodge mechanics the player has been building throughout the playthrough.

Wither

Summoned with Soul Sand + Wither Skeleton Skulls

The Epic Fight Wither summons Wither's Minion enemies and spectral Wither Ghost entities throughout the fight, forcing the player to manage multiple threats while dodging its new ranged attacks. The Wither Beam vaporizes anything it hits directly, while the Shockwave punishes players who stand still. The game rule noMobsInBossfight prevents additional mobs from spawning during the encounter by default.

The Ender Dragon fires sweeping laser beams that track the player and maintains a Crystal Link to nearby End Crystals that amplifies its attacks while at least one crystal remains. A spectacular Dragon Breath Finale closes out the fight with an area-of-effect Dragon Breath attack. Defeating the Dragon permanently unlocks the Demolition Leap mobility skill for the player, which cannot be obtained any other way.

Configuration

Epic Fight has both in-game settings and server-side game rules that control the combat experience. The in-game Settings screen (default: open via the Epic Fight Config key) contains full control over the HUD layout, blood particles, compute shaders for performance, camera behavior including third-person aiming mode, and item category assignments.

The common config file allows adjusting the Skill Book drop chance from hostile mobs and Skill Book appearance rate in chest loot, each adjustable from -100 to +100 relative to the default rate. Setting these higher speeds up the skill acquisition curve for servers that want a faster power progression.

FAQ

How do I dodge and guard?

Dodging uses the Dodge key (default: Left Shift in Combat Mode) and requires a Dodge skill to be equipped in the Dodge slot via the Skill Editor. Roll and Step are the two base skills. Guarding uses the right-click (Use) key while holding a weapon with guard support. Both drain Stamina.

Why can't I swing my weapon or dodge?

The most common cause is empty Stamina. When the green Stamina bar is depleted, attacks, dodges, and guards are all locked until it regenerates. Make sure you are in Epic Fight Combat Mode (press R to toggle). If you have no Dodge skill in your slot, the dodge key will do nothing even with full Stamina.

Where do I find Skill Books?

Skill Books drop randomly from hostile mobs and appear in dungeon and structure chest loot. The Uchigatana, which is not a Skill Book but behaves similarly as a non-craftable find, spawns specifically in Desert Temple and Jungle Temple chests. Drop rates for Skill Books from mobs and chests can be adjusted in the common config file.

How do I use a weapon's Innate Skill?

Land hits on enemies to fill the Weapon Charge bar displayed on the HUD. When the bar is completely full, press the Weapon Innate Skill key (default: V) to fire the skill. Each weapon type has a different Innate Skill. Holding the key for some skills, like Steel Whirlwind, charges them up for a stronger effect.

Does Epic Fight work with mods that add new weapons?

Epic Fight is also an API and Library mod. Other mods can register their weapons with Epic Fight via datapacks to get full combat support. The in-game Datapack Editor and Item Category screen allow manually assigning non-registered items to combat or mining categories. Many popular combat mods have Epic Fight integration available as separate addon mods.

How do I get the Demolition Leap skill?

Demolition Leap is unlocked exclusively by defeating the Ender Dragon. It cannot be obtained from mob drops or chest loot. After the Dragon is killed, the skill becomes available to learn. Because it reduces the next fall damage by 50% and launches the player in a targeted direction, it pairs extremely well with Meteor Slam builds for aerial combat.
