Hybrid Aquatic Mod Guide: Marine Life, Karkinos Boss, Diving Gear & Ocean Exploration
Hybrid Aquatic overhauls Minecraft's oceans, rivers, and swamps with more than 50 new aquatic creatures, from schooling tropical fish and bioluminescent deep-sea dwellers to apex predator sharks and the Karkinos mini-boss. The mod also adds new armor sets, fishing mechanics, potions, and ocean-themed building blocks. Browse all items and recipes using the tabs above.
Overview
Hybrid Aquatic transforms Minecraft's aquatic environments from simple backdrop into living ecosystems. Rivers gain Crayfish and freshwater schooling fish. Warm ocean biomes fill with Clownfish, Surgeonfish, Stingrays, and Manta Rays. The deep ocean hides Anglerfish, Barreleyes, and enormous sharks, while jungle rivers harbor dangerous Piranhas.
Beyond passive wildlife, the mod introduces a Diving Suit for extended underwater exploration, Seashell and Coral tool tiers, a new fishing system using off-hand hooks, nine crab species that collectively unlock the Karkinos mini-boss, and a suite of new potions brewed from marine ingredients.
All 320 items and blocks added by this mod are browsable in the Items and Recipes tabs above. This guide covers every major system so new players know what to expect and where to start.
Getting Started
- 1
Explore your first ocean
As soon as you enter any body of water, new creatures appear. Warm ocean biomes show Clownfish sheltering in Anemones, Surgeonfish browsing coral, and Stingrays gliding across the seafloor. Schools of Mackerel and Herring move in synchronized groups. Rivers spawn Crayfish, Goldfish, and other freshwater species.
- 2
Gather seafood for food
Kill Shrimp, Lobster, or Crayfish for Raw Shrimp, Lobster Claws, or Raw Crayfish. Convert a Lobster Claw into Raw Lobster at a Crafting Table. Cook any raw seafood in a Furnace, Smoker, or over a Campfire for Cooked Shrimp, Cooked Lobster, or Cooked Crayfish. These seafood items are a reliable food source throughout any ocean playthrough.
- 3
Craft Seashell tools from Nautilus Shells
Find and kill Nautilus creatures on warm ocean floors to collect Nautilus Shells. Use them to craft the Seashell tool tier: Seashell Pickaxe, Seashell Axe, Seashell Shovel, Seashell Hoe, and the Seashell Spear. Seashell tools have an enchantability of 22, higher than Iron, making them excellent early enchanting candidates before you find better materials.
- 4
Build a Diving Suit for deep exploration
Craft a Diving Helmet, Diving Suit, Diving Leggings, and Diving Boots using Copper Ingots and Leather. The full set provides 13 armor points and applies a negative buoyancy effect, anchoring you to the seafloor so you stop floating upward constantly. This makes deep-sea exploration and underwater mining far more manageable.
- 5
Hunt all nine crab species
Nine crab species live across different ocean and coastal biomes: Coconut Crab, Dungeness Crab, Fiddler Crab, Vampire Crab, Flower Crab, Ghost Crab, Spider Crab, Yeti Crab, and Lightfoot Crab. Each drops a unique claw. Collecting all nine allows you to craft the Ominous Hook and summon Karkinos, the mod's formidable mini-boss.
Fish & Marine Life
Warm Ocean Fish
Warm ocean and coral reef biomes host the majority of Hybrid Aquatic's fish species. Clownfish come in four variants and seek shelter inside Anemones, remaining immune to the Anemone's poison effect. Surgeonfish come in seven variants and swim passively through the reef. Stingrays appear in two variants while the Manta Ray maintains one iconic form, both gliding elegantly across sandy seabeds.
Cowfish, Triggerfish, Lionfish, Rockfish, Parrotfish, Seahorse, Damselfish, Wrasse, and Boxfish round out the reef population. Seahorses come in seven color variants and seek camouflage near coral plants. The Nautilus roams reef floors and drops Nautilus Shells, which are the primary material for the Seashell tool and armor tier.
Schooling & Open Water Fish
Mackerel, Herring, Tuna, Mahi, Barracuda, Flying Fish, and Oarfish populate open ocean waters. Schooling species like Mackerel and Herring move in tight synchronized groups, calculated in pairs by the engine to reduce performance overhead. Tuna periodically leap out of the water. The Ocean Sunfish is one of the heaviest fish and drops two Fish Steaks when killed.
Deep Sea Creatures
Underwater caves and oceanic trenches spawn bioluminescent species. The Anglerfish lurks with its glowing lure and drops Glowslime when killed. The Barreleye, recognizable by its transparent tubular eyes, also drops Glowslime. The Dragonfish emits light via bioluminescent photophores along its body. Snailfish, Coelacanth, Ratfish, and the enormous Oarfish also inhabit the deep.
Freshwater & Decorative Fish
Rivers and swamps add Crayfish, Goldfish, Betta, Discus, Gourami, Oscar, Danio, Tiger Barb, Golden Dorado, and Pleco. Koi Fish spawn exclusively in Cherry Grove biomes and are rare to encounter. Some fish are purely decorative, dropping nothing on death: Stonefish, Toadfish, Needlefish, Tetra, Pupfish, Shiner, and Sea Angel exist to populate reefs, riverbanks, and aquarium builds.
Building an Aquarium
The Fishing Net catches any aquatic creature and stores it inside the item. Netted creatures do not despawn, making the Fishing Net the essential tool for aquarium building. Right-click to release the captured creature into any water block. Seahorses, Sea Angels, Firefly Squid, Starfish, Sea Slugs, Nudibranchs, and small jellyfish species make excellent aquarium inhabitants.
Crustaceans & Invertebrates
Shrimp, Lobster & Crayfish
Shrimp drop Raw Shrimp when killed. Lobsters drop a Lobster Claw and a Raw Lobster Tail. Convert the Lobster Claw into Raw Lobster in a Crafting Table, then cook both the Raw Lobster and Raw Lobster Tail separately for two distinct cooked food items. Crayfish inhabit freshwater rivers and drop Raw Crayfish, making them accessible from the very beginning of a playthrough.
The Nine Crab Species
Nine crab species span ocean, coastal, and cave biomes. Dungeness Crabs and Coconut Crabs live in warm ocean floors. Fiddler Crabs and Ghost Crabs roam sandy beaches. Spider Crabs occupy colder ocean depths. Yeti Crabs cluster near Thermal Vents. Flower Crabs, Vampire Crabs, and Lightfoot Crabs each fill specific biome niches. Every species drops a uniquely named claw item.
Collecting one claw from each of the nine species unlocks the mod's signature progression moment. Combine all nine claws in a Crafting Table to create the Ominous Hook. Hold the Ominous Hook in your off-hand alongside a Fishing Rod and cast into water to summon Karkinos, the crab mini-boss, from any water source.
Other Invertebrates
Hermit Crabs are not one of the nine boss-unlocking species and drop no claw. Instead, they occasionally drop Nuggets while burrowing through Sand blocks. Horseshoe Crabs are passive and decorative. Cuttlefish push players backward with an ink-blast defense when struck and drop Cuttlebone, which converts directly to Bone Meal at a Crafting Table.
Cephalopods include the Octopus, Umbrella Octopus, Arrow Squid, Firefly Squid, Vampire Squid, and Nautilus. Giant Isopods lurk in dark ocean trenches alongside Snailfish. Sea Urchins deal contact damage on the seafloor and drop Sea Urchin Spines used in potion brewing. Starfish, Sea Cucumbers, Sea Slugs, and Sea Angels crawl slowly along warm ocean floors.
Ominous Hook

Karkinos
Summoned via Ominous Hook in any waterA giant crimson crab that surfaces when summoned with the Ominous Hook. Karkinos is significantly larger than all other crab species and hits hard in melee. Its Karkinos Claw drop adds 3 blocks of reach to block interactions when held in the off-hand, one of the most useful utility upgrades in the mod.
Karkinos: The Crab Mini-Boss
Summoning
Place the Ominous Hook in your off-hand slot and hold a Fishing Rod in your main hand. Cast the rod into any body of water. When the bobber sinks, reel it in as normal. Karkinos surfaces immediately at the bobber's location. Finding a safe shoreline or platform before summoning is strongly recommended, as the fight is best handled from land or shallow water.
The Fight
Karkinos deals 10 damage (5 hearts) per melee hit and has 400 health (200 hearts). Diamond armor or better is strongly recommended before the fight. During the encounter, Karkinos periodically summons three Karcinogens or three Karcinomas at a time. Keep distance and use a Bow or Trident if possible.
The Karkinos Claw Reward
Defeating Karkinos drops 8 to 16 Raw Crab and the Karkinos Claw with a 100% drop rate. Equip the Karkinos Claw in your off-hand to add 3 blocks of block interaction range, extending your reach from 4.5 to 7.5 blocks. This bonus applies with any tool or weapon in your main hand, making it a permanent quality-of-life upgrade for mining, building, and farming.
The Karkinos Claw's +3 reach bonus applies whenever it sits in your off-hand slot, not just in combat. Pair it with any Pickaxe in your main hand to mine from 7.5 blocks away. This is particularly useful for harvesting resources from dangerous ledges or across lava without repositioning.
Sharks & Ocean Hazards
Shark Species
Several shark species roam Hybrid Aquatic's oceans. The Basking Shark and Whale Shark are passive filter feeders that open their enormous mouths near the surface to feed. Both are safe to swim near. The Hammerhead Shark, Bull Shark, Tiger Shark, Thresher Shark, Frilled Shark, Lantern Shark, and Hound Shark are aggressive when hungry and will attack players unprovoked.
The Great White Shark is the apex predator and attacks any entity on sight without needing to be hungry first. Sharks drop Shark Teeth when defeated. Shark Teeth enable two important crafting recipes: a craftable Trident (combined with Prismarine Rods) and the Potion of Bleeding via brewing. The Whale Shark is completely safe to swim alongside.
Jellyfish
Thirteen jellyfish species drift through ocean water: Barrel Jellyfish, Blue Jellyfish, Box Jellyfish, Cepheidae Jellyfish, Crown Jellyfish, Lion's Mane Jellyfish, Moon Jellyfish, Mauve Stinger, Sea Nettle, Nomura Jellyfish, Big Red Jellyfish, Cosmic Jellyfish, and Firework Jellyfish. Contact with any jellyfish applies a Poison effect. They drop Slime Balls when killed, providing an ocean-based Slime source.
Venomous Creatures
The Lionfish applies Poison and Nausea when struck or approached too closely, so kill it from range with a Trident or Bow. The Stonefish delivers Poison level 3 on contact and blends into the reef floor, making it easy to step on accidentally. The Anemone applies Poison to most creatures except Clownfish, which are immune. Sea Urchins deal contact damage and drop Sea Urchin Spines.
Piranhas inhabit jungle rivers and attack with rapid strikes that apply the Bleeding status effect. Bleeding in the water draws additional Piranhas, escalating the encounter quickly. Avoid wading into jungle river water without strong armor. The Piranha item itself is edible if you manage to collect one.
Food & Seafood
Hybrid Aquatic adds eight new food types from aquatic creatures, all of which cook in a Furnace, Smoker, or over a Campfire. Raw Shrimp, Raw Crayfish, Raw Crab, Raw Lobster, Raw Lobster Tail, Fish Steak (from the Ocean Sunfish), Raw Fish Meat (from Carp or Moray Eel), and Raw Tentacle (from Cuttlefish or squid-type creatures) all have cooked counterparts.
Cooked Lobster and Cooked Lobster Tail are among the most filling options. Cooked Fish Meat is the easiest to obtain in bulk, as Carp and Moray Eels are plentiful in rivers and warm oceans. Raw Fish Meat restores 1 hunger uncooked, while Cooked Fish Meat provides 2 hunger and 2.5 saturation. Cooked Shrimp and Cooked Crayfish are lighter snacks suited to topping off hunger quickly between dives.
Uni is a rare delicacy obtained from Sea Urchins. Many fish including Anglerfish, Barreleye, Herring, Mackerel, and others drop their fish item directly and can be cooked as general food. Check the Items tab for the complete list of food values per species.
Cooking Seafood

Potions from Marine Resources
Hybrid Aquatic adds several new potion effects brewed from marine ingredients. Shark Teeth enable the Potion of Bleeding, which deals damage-over-time to targets. Sea Urchin Spines enable the Potion of Thorns, granting a prickly defense that punishes attackers. Both are effective as splash potions in mob fights or PvP encounters.
Giant Clams found open in warm waters can be right-clicked for a chance to receive a Pearl, with a 25% chance of a Black Pearl instead. Pearls brew a Potion of Minor Luck and Black Pearls brew a Potion of Major Luck, both providing the Luck status effect useful for improving loot tables. Collect Pearl Blocks (9 Pearls each) and Black Pearl Blocks (9 Black Pearls each) to store them compactly.
Thermal Vents on the ocean floor emit the Corrosion effect and produce Sulfur as a drop when mined with a Pickaxe alongside Copper, Iron, and Gold Nuggets. Sulfur combines with Coal and two Bone Meal in a Crafting Table to produce two Gunpowder, making Thermal Vents a renewable Gunpowder source. The Corrosion, Thalassophobia, Buoyancy, Clarity, and Swimming potions round out the new brewing additions.
New Potion Effects
| Bleeding | Deals damage over time. Source: Shark Tooth. |
| Thorns | Damages attackers on hit. Source: Sea Urchin Spine. |
| Minor Luck | Luck I effect. Source: Pearl. |
| Major Luck | Luck II effect. Source: Black Pearl. |
| Buoyancy | Modifies swim buoyancy behavior. |
| Clarity | Reduces underwater fog distance. |
| Corrosion | Dealt by Thermal Vents. Can be brewed for traps. |
| Thalassophobia | Fear of the deep — alters deep-sea visual effects. |
| Swimming | Improves underwater movement speed. |
Diving Gear & Armor Sets
Diving Suit
The Diving Suit is a four-piece armor set crafted from Copper Ingots and Leather. The Diving Helmet uses a Glass Pane for its viewport. The full set provides 13 armor points, placing it between Chainmail (12) and Iron (15) protection. Its defining mechanic is negative buoyancy: wearing all four pieces underwater causes you to sink slowly rather than float, keeping you anchored to the seafloor for easier mining and movement.
Seashell Armor
The Seashell armor tier uses Nautilus Shells. The Nautilus Helmet provides 2 armor and the Nautilus Pauldrons provide 4 armor in the chestplate slot. The full Seashell set offers 11 total armor points, similar to Gold armor, but its enchantability of 22 makes it far superior for enchanting. Apply Aqua Affinity, Respiration, and Depth Strider to Seashell pieces for a powerful underwater exploration setup.
Special Armor Pieces
The Turtle Chestplate is crafted from eight Turtle Scutes and occupies the chestplate slot. It provides only 1 armor point but delivers 1 armor toughness and 0.3 knockback resistance, making it a situational defensive choice for players frequently getting pushed around. The Eel Scarf and Moon Jellyfish Hat are cosmetic wearables obtained from fishing Crates. The Manglerfish Lure equips in the helmet slot and provides 1 armor point.
Armor Set Comparison
| Diving | Seashell | |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Copper + Leather | Nautilus Shell |
| Helmet | 2 | 2 |
| Chestplate | 5 | 4 |
| Leggings | 4 | 3 |
| Boots | 2 | 2 |
| Total | 13 | 11 |
| Toughness | 0 | 0 |
| Enchant | 9 | 22 |
| Special | Negative buoyancy | High enchantability |
Diving Armor

The negative buoyancy effect only activates when you wear all four Diving Suit pieces simultaneously. Wearing just the helmet or chestplate gives armor points but does not change how you float. Craft the full set before your first deep-sea mining session to notice the difference.
Tools & Weapons
Two crafting tool tiers let players equip themselves entirely from ocean resources. The Seashell tier uses Nautilus Shells and covers Pickaxe, Axe, Shovel, Hoe, and Spear. The Coral tier uses Coral Chunks broken from any coral block and covers Pickaxe, Axe, Shovel, and Hoe. The Coral Blade is the Coral tier's sword-equivalent, crafted from Coral Chunks and Stick.
Seashell tools have Stone-level mining speed (4.0) and durability (131), but an enchantability of 22 that beats even Gold (22 for Gold vs 9 for Iron). This makes Seashell the best early-game material for enchanting, particularly for a Seashell Pickaxe with Fortune or Efficiency. Coral tools match Iron-level speed (6.0) and durability (250) for a reliable ocean-sourced Iron alternative.
The Trident also receives a new craftable recipe in this mod. Two Shark Teeth combined with a Prismarine Rod (crafted from two Prismarine Shards stacked vertically) produce a Trident. This removes reliance on Drowned mob drops as the only Trident source, making the weapon far more accessible to early ocean players.
Tool Material Comparison
| Seashell | Coral | |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Nautilus Shell | Coral Chunk |
| Durability | 131 | 250 |
| Speed | 4.0 | 6.0 |

The Fishing System: Hooks & Nets
Fish Hooks
Hybrid Aquatic's hook system redesigns fishing with off-hand items that modify how any Fishing Rod behaves. Craft a hook and place it in your off-hand slot. Hold the Fishing Rod in your main hand and cast as normal. The hook remains in your inventory after each catch and is fully reusable, never consumed on use.
The Barbed Hook increases bite speed during the day. The Glowing Hook increases bite speed at night. The Magnetic Hook increases the chance of catching treasure items and Crates. The CreeperMagnet Hook hooks and reels in Creepers instead of fish (the item tooltip warns: "Don't use indoors"). The Ominous Hook summons Karkinos and is not intended for normal fishing.
Fishing Crates
Fishing with any hook can produce wooden Crates as a catch. Crates come in all vanilla wood variants plus a Hybrid Crate with its own loot table. Place the Crate as a block and break it with an Axe to open it. Crates can contain Shark Plushies, the Eel Scarf or Moon Jellyfish Hat wearables, biome-specific resources like flowers or logs, or standard materials.
Live Catch Enchantment & Messages in a Bottle
The Live Catch enchantment applies to Fishing Rods. When a rod enchanted with Live Catch hooks a fish, the live fish mob materializes near your feet instead of dropping a food item. This turns fishing into a passive collection tool for aquarium stocking without needing a Fishing Net on every individual creature.
Message in a Bottle blocks float on ocean surfaces and are also obtainable from fishing. Place one as a block and break it to receive a Sea Message book containing one of the mod's many hidden messages and Easter eggs. These are cosmetic collectibles but worth seeking out.

Bioluminescent Resources: Glowslime & Glowsticks
Glowslime is the primary bioluminescent resource. Anglerfish and Barreleye in deep ocean caves drop it on death. Dragonfish and some Jellyfish variants also yield small amounts. Alternatively, combine one Slime Ball and one Glow Ink Sac in a Crafting Table to produce Glowslime without venturing into the deep sea. Nine Glowslime items compress into a Glowslime Block, which is reversible.
Combine one Stick with one Glowslime to produce four Glowsticks. Glowsticks place like torches, including on walls, and emit light underwater. They are the go-to solution for lighting underwater mining areas or build sites. The Glowslime Block also has physics like a Slime Block, providing bounce when landed on and usable in redstone contraptions.
Bioluminescent Crafting

Decorative Blocks & Ocean Building
Driftwood
Driftwood is a new wood type with a pale, bleached appearance found on ocean floors and beaches. It processes into a complete wood set: Driftwood Log, Stripped Driftwood Log, Driftwood Wood, Driftwood Planks, Slabs, Stairs, Fence, Fence Gate, Door, Trapdoor, Button, and Pressure Plate. Its weathered look makes it ideal for beach cottages, shipwrecks, piers, and nautical builds.
New Corals
Hybrid Aquatic adds six new coral types: Lophelia Coral, Rose Coral, Leaf Coral, Sun Coral, Thorn Coral, and Button Coral. Each comes with Block, Fan, and Wall Fan variants plus their dead counterparts, matching vanilla coral's structure. The new corals generate naturally in warm ocean biomes and make coral-heavy builds significantly more varied and colorful.
Ocean Plants & Ambient Blocks
Sargassum floats on open ocean surfaces and grows on the seafloor. It smelts or smokes into Dried Kelp. Bull Kelp grows as a tall seaweed plant. Red Algae, Sea Lettuce, and Water Lettuce add smaller ground-cover aquatic plants. Dunegrass and Tall Dunegrass grow along coastal sandy areas. Glowing Plankton patches generate in the deep ocean, creating ambient bioluminescent clusters without crafting or placement.
Utility Blocks & Decoratives
Tube Sponges spawn in warm ocean biomes. Four Tube Sponges craft into one Sponge at a Crafting Table, making Tube Sponge a renewable Sponge source for water-clearing projects. The Buoy places in water and serves as a navigation marker or hazard indicator. Rafts function as floating platforms. Pearl Block and Black Pearl Block store their respective pearls compactly at 9 per block.
Eight Shark Plushies exist as placeable decorative blocks: Basking, Bull, Frilled, Great White, Hammerhead, Thresher, Tiger, and Whale Shark varieties. They are obtained from fishing Crates or occasionally sold by Wandering Traders. The Anemone, Giant Green Anemone, and Strawberry Anemone also place as decorative animated blocks and retain their poison behavior against mobs.
Driftwood & Navigation

4All Crate blocks require an Axe to break open. Right-clicking a placed Crate does nothing. Place the Crate as a block, then break it with any Axe to loot its contents. The Hybrid Crate has its own loot table separate from the biome-specific wood crates. Crab Pots function similarly and also break open with an Axe.
FAQ
How do I summon Karkinos?
Collect one claw from each of the nine crab species: Coconut Crab Claw, Dungeness Crab Claw, Fiddler Crab Claw, Vampire Crab Claw, Flower Crab Claw, Ghost Crab Claw, Spider Crab Claw, Yeti Crab Claw, and Lightfoot Crab Claw. Combine all nine in a Crafting Table to create the Ominous Hook. Hold the Ominous Hook in your off-hand and a Fishing Rod in your main hand, cast the rod into water, and reel in when the bobber sinks. Karkinos surfaces immediately.
What does the Karkinos Claw do?
The Karkinos Claw adds 3 blocks of block interaction range when held in your off-hand slot. Your normal range is 4.5 blocks; with the claw, it extends to 7.5 blocks. This bonus applies while holding any tool or weapon in your main hand, making it a permanent quality-of-life upgrade useful for mining, building, and farming from a safe distance.
What do the different fishing hooks do?
Barbed Hook increases bite speed during the day. Glowing Hook increases bite speed at night. Magnetic Hook increases the chance of catching treasure items and Crates. CreeperMagnet Hook reels in Creepers instead of fish. All hooks equip in the off-hand slot alongside a Fishing Rod and are fully reusable. The Ominous Hook is used only to summon Karkinos, not for normal fishing.
How do I get Glowslime without going to the deep sea?
Combine one Slime Ball with one Glow Ink Sac in a Crafting Table to produce one Glowslime. Glow Ink Sacs drop from Glow Squids in any body of water. This lets you produce Glowslime without hunting deep-sea Anglerfish. Once you have Glowslime, craft it with a Stick to produce four Glowsticks for underwater lighting.
Can the Fishing Net catch sharks?
The Fishing Net can catch nearly all aquatic creatures but cannot catch Sharks in normal play. This is intentional design, as sharks are too large and aggressive to be netted. The Fishing Net excels at capturing fish, crabs, jellyfish, seahorses, and other creatures for aquarium displays, and netted creatures do not despawn.
What is the Live Catch enchantment?
Live Catch is a custom Fishing Rod enchantment. When a rod with Live Catch successfully hooks a fish, the live fish mob spawns near your feet instead of dropping a food item. This turns fishing into an aquarium-stocking tool without requiring a Fishing Net on each individual creature. It works on all fishable species added by the mod.
