Rotten Creatures Mod Guide: All Zombie Variants, Boss Encounters & Special Items

Rotten Creatures adds eight distinct zombie variants to Minecraft, each tied to a specific biome with its own mechanics, status effects, and drops. From the ice-freezing Frostbitten to the explosive pirate captain Dead Beard, every mob brings something genuinely new to hostile encounters. This guide covers where to find each creature, what makes them dangerous, and how to use everything they drop.

Overview

Rotten Creatures introduces eight new hostile mobs that replace or supplement standard Zombie spawns across every major biome. Each creature has a distinct visual design, unique attack effects, special behaviors, and exclusive item drops that feed into new crafting recipes and brewing options.

The mod also adds two craftable blocks, a throwable weapon used by one mob variant, two new status effects, and a full Freeze Potion brewing chain. Mob spawn rates are fully configurable if you want to encounter them more — or less — often. Browse all items and recipes using the tabs above.

Getting Started

  1. 1

    Understand the biome system

Every Rotten Creature is tied to a specific biome or condition. Frostbittens and Glacial Hunters spawn in cold and snow biomes, Swampies appear in Swamp Biomes, Mummies in Desert Biomes, Burned in the Nether Wastes, and Undead Miners underground. Knowing which biome you are entering tells you which mob mechanics to prepare for.

  2. 2

    Prepare for status effects

Most Rotten Creatures apply status effects on hit. The Frostbitten applies Freeze, the Burned sets you on fire, the Swampy inflicts Blindness and Poison, the Mummy applies Hunger III, the Glacial Hunter applies Slowness II, and the Immortal applies the Channelled effect that attracts lightning. Bring Milk Buckets and Fire Resistance Potions when exploring affected biomes.

  3. 3

    Farm Frozen Rotten Flesh first

Frozen Rotten Flesh dropped by Frostbittens is the gateway item for the mod's crafting and brewing chain. It unlocks Corrupted Wart, which unlocks Freeze Potions and Tipped Arrows. Head to a cold biome early and collect a stack before exploring further.

  4. 4

Hunt Undead Miners for reliable loot

Undead Miners spawn in caves below Y=63 across every Overworld biome. They are one of the most reliable sources of mid-game loot from this mod, with the rarer Diamond variant having a chance to drop a Diamond Pickaxe. Mine normally and engage them as you encounter them.

  5. 5

    Seek rare mobs intentionally

Dead Beard spawns on Beach Biomes with an extremely low weight of 1, and the Immortal has only a 2.5% spawn chance during active Thunderstorms in non-desert, non-badlands Overworld biomes. Both require intentional hunting. The Immortal's Trident drop and Dead Beard's Treasure Chest are the most valuable rewards in the mod.

Cold Biome Encounters

Frostbitten

The Frostbitten spawns naturally in cold biomes and can also arise when a standard Zombie dies in Powder Snow, with the conversion chance scaling with difficulty. It has 20 health (10 hearts), 3 attack damage (1.5 hearts), and 2 points of armor.

Every hit applies the Freeze effect, a buffed Slowness that can completely paralyze the target at higher difficulty settings. Frozen players cannot jump, shake visibly, and see a frozen overlay on their screen. The Frostbitten also freezes water it walks over, similar to the Frost Walker enchantment.

Baby Frostbittens are particularly dangerous. When a baby dies, it triggers a snow explosion that applies Freeze to all nearby entities in a 10-block radius for 5 seconds. Frostbittens will attack any Burned on sight, making them natural enemies in biome-adjacent areas.

Glacial Hunter

The Glacial Hunter spawns rarely in Snow Biomes and comes in two configurations: unarmed or carrying a Spear. The unarmed variant has 20 health (10 hearts), 3 attack damage (1.5 hearts), and 4 armor points, and applies Slowness II on hit. Hitting the Glacial Hunter repeatedly has a chance to make it drop Raw Cod even before it dies.

The Spear variant has its attack damage increased to 6 (3 hearts), gains added knockback, and loses the Slowness II effect. There is a 40% chance any given Glacial Hunter will carry a Spear, and a 50% chance it will spawn alongside a Hunter's Wolf that also attacks the player.

⚠️Freeze Effect

The Freeze status effect applies a severe Slowness that can fully immobilize you at higher difficulty settings. Frozen players cannot jump. Drinking Milk removes the effect. Avoid fighting multiple Frostbittens at once, especially on Hard or Hardcore difficulty.

The Burned: Nether Zombie

The Burned spawns exclusively in Nether Wastes and can also arise when a standard Zombie dies in Lava, with the conversion chance depending on difficulty. It has 22 health (11 hearts), 4 attack damage (2 hearts), and 4 armor points. Every hit sets the target on fire. The Burned is hostile toward Frostbittens on sight.

When a Burned drops below half health, it transforms into the Crazy Variant. Crazy Burneds emit lava particles, gain increased attack damage, knockback resistance, and movement speed. There is also a 0.5% chance for a Crazy Variant to spawn naturally in the world.

Splashing a Burned with Water (excluding rain and splash potions) converts it into the Obsidian Variant. Obsidian Burneds become immune to projectiles, gain fall damage resistance, and increase their attack damage and knockback resistance, but move slower. When an Obsidian Burned contacts Lava again, it reignites and reverts. The Obsidian Variant also has its own Crazy sub-variant that emits smoke particles.

🚫Do Not Splash Water on a Burned

Using a Water Bucket or Splash Water Potion on a Burned transforms it into the Obsidian variant, which is immune to arrows and has increased melee stats. Fight Burned mobs with melee or fire-based attacks and avoid triggering the Obsidian form unintentionally.

Underground: Undead Miners

Undead Miners spawn in caves throughout every Overworld biome below Y=63. They have 24 health (12 hearts), 4 attack damage (2 hearts), and 2 armor points. Unlike most other Rotten Creatures, Undead Miners have no baby variants and are restricted from sunlight like Skeletons.

There are four distinct ranks identified by the pickaxe they carry. Each rank has its own loot table and spawn weighting. The Gold (Rank M) variant is special in that it replaces Stone variants in Mesa and Badlands biomes, making Badlands cave systems the best place to hunt for the unique Gold rank loot.

Swamp and Desert Mobs

Swampy

Swampy spawns in Swamp Biomes and is one of the faster mobs in the mod at 16 health (8 hearts) and 3 attack damage (1.5 hearts). It leaps toward its target when attacking. Adult Swampies apply Blindness and Poison on hit, with durations scaling by difficulty. While in water, it receives a movement speed boost, making swamp fights particularly dangerous.

Baby Swampies do not apply status effects. Instead, they run at the player, explode, and spawn a lingering Poison cloud. On death, any Swampy has a 50% chance to spawn a lingering Poison cloud where it fell, so do not stand over a dying Swampy.

Mummy

Mummies spawn rarely in Desert Biomes and move relatively slowly at 26 health (13 hearts), 3 attack damage (1.5 hearts), and 2 armor points. Each hit inflicts Hunger III, which drains the food bar rapidly and prevents natural regeneration. There is a 35% chance that a Mummy will instead be the Ancient Mummy variant, identifiable by its slightly different appearance.

While tracking a player, a Mummy has a rare chance to spawn a Scarab beetle to assist it. When a Mummy dies, it releases two or three Scarabs automatically. The Ancient Mummy summons Flying Scarabs instead of ground-crawling ones. Scarabs have only 10 health (5 hearts) and 2 attack damage (1 heart) but arrive in groups that create chaotic fights.

Dead Beard: The Pirate Captain

Dead Beard is the most powerful mob in Rotten Creatures, spawning on Beach Biomes with an extremely low weight of 1. It has 70 health (35 hearts), 5 attack damage (2.5 hearts), 2 armor points, and full knockback resistance, meaning no attack will push it back. It is effectively a mini-boss encounter.

As Dead Beard moves, it periodically spawns Zombie Lackeys and Skeleton Lackeys as crew members. Zombie Lackeys have 20 health (10 hearts) and 3 attack damage; Skeleton Lackeys have 18 health (9 hearts) and fire arrows. All pirate crew members despawn after 30 seconds.

When Dead Beard drops to low health, it pulls out a TNT Barrel and detonates it 5 seconds later. If the explosion kills Dead Beard, no loot drops at all. The priority when fighting Dead Beard is to deal enough damage to kill it before the TNT Barrel detonates, or to be far enough away that the explosion does not also kill the player.

💡The Treasure Chest

The Treasure Chest dropped by Dead Beard must be placed on the ground to open. It automatically opens and dispenses random loot before disappearing, including Iron Nuggets, Gold Nuggets, Gold Ingots, Emeralds, Diamonds, and occasionally a Totem of Undying. Do not pick it up expecting to open it from your inventory — it only works when placed.

The Immortal: Storm Chaser's Reward

The Immortal spawns in any Overworld biome that allows rain and thunder during active Thunderstorms, excluding Desert, Badlands, and Snow biomes. Its spawn chance is 2.5%, making it genuinely rare. It has 25 health (12.5 hearts), 10 attack damage (5 hearts), and 2 armor points. That 5-heart hit makes it the most dangerous melee threat in the mod.

Each hit applies the Channelled effect, which causes lightning bolts to target the afflicted player. If lightning strikes the Immortal itself, it restores its health. The Immortal can also perform a dash attack that restores its own health on completion, and can infect standard Zombies nearby, converting them into Zap zombies that follow it as allies.

At low health, lightning bolts begin appearing around the Immortal and its speed increases dramatically. If the Thunderstorm ends before the Immortal dies, it loses all its abilities, its Trident vanishes from its chest, and it becomes a standard weak zombie. If it is killed during an active storm, it has a 100% chance to drop a Trident with either Channeling I or Riptide I. Without a storm, the Trident drop chance falls to 10% and is unenchanted.

Items and Potions

Frozen Rotten Flesh

Dropped by Frostbittens (0-2 per kill), Frozen Rotten Flesh has two uses. Eating it gives an 80% chance to apply the Freeze effect to the player for 15 seconds, which makes it almost never worth eating directly. More importantly, it is the key ingredient for Corrupted Wart and can be cooked in a Furnace, Smoker, or Campfire to convert it back into normal Rotten Flesh.

Magma Rotten Flesh

Dropped by Burneds, Magma Rotten Flesh has a 50% chance to grant Fire Resistance for 15 seconds when eaten, but also a 50% chance to set the player on fire for 5 seconds instead. It can be used as Furnace fuel, but requires 3 pieces to cook a single item, making it one of the least efficient fuel sources in the game.

Freeze Potion Brewing

Brewing Freeze Potions requires two steps. First, craft Corrupted Wart from four Nether Wart and one Frozen Rotten Flesh. Brew Corrupted Wart into a regular Water Bottle (not Awkward Potion) to create a Corrupted Potion. Then add Frozen Rotten Flesh to the Corrupted Potion to produce the Potion of Freeze.

Freeze Potions can be extended and strengthened like standard potions, and converted into Splash and Lingering variants. Tipped Arrows of Freeze require a Lingering Potion of Freeze with eight arrows. The Freeze effect is extremely powerful in both PvE and PvP, completely immobilizing targets and removing their ability to jump.

Configuration

All spawn weights are configurable via the mod's config file. The default values are: Frostbitten and Swampy at 80, Burned, Glacial Hunter, Undead Miner, and Mummy at 20, Dead Beard at 1, and Immortal at a 2.5% chance. The Undead Miner maximum spawn depth defaults to Y=63 and can also be changed.

If you use Mod Menu (Fabric) or the in-game mod configuration screen, you can access these values without editing files. Increasing Dead Beard's weight from 1 to 10 or more makes encounters much more common on beaches. Increasing the Immortal chance to 0.1 or higher makes thunderstorm patrols consistently rewarding.

FAQ

How do I get a Trident from the Immortal?

The Immortal only guarantees a Trident drop (100%) when killed during an active Thunderstorm. The drop is always enchanted with either Channeling I or Riptide I. Without a storm, the chance drops to 10% and the Trident is unenchanted. Time your hunts to Thunderstorm weather for the best results.

How do I open the Treasure Chest from Dead Beard?

Place the Treasure Chest on the ground by right-clicking a surface. It will automatically open and drop its loot — iron and gold nuggets, gold ingots, emeralds, diamonds, and occasionally a Totem of Undying — then disappear. It cannot be opened from your inventory.

How do I brew the Freeze Potion?

Craft Corrupted Wart from four Nether Wart and one Frozen Rotten Flesh. Brew it into a plain Water Bottle (not an Awkward Potion) to make a Corrupted Potion. Then brew Frozen Rotten Flesh into the Corrupted Potion to create a Potion of Freeze. Freeze Potions can be converted into Splash and Lingering variants normally.

Why is the Immortal not doing anything powerful?

The Immortal's abilities — self-healing from lightning, Channelled effect on hit, dash attack, and high attack damage — all depend on an active Thunderstorm. If the storm ends during the fight, the Immortal loses its Trident, turns red, and becomes a weak standard mob. Its 10-heart melee damage on normal difficulty is still present regardless of weather.

Do Frostbittens and Burneds fight each other?

Yes. Frostbittens will attack any Burned on sight, and Burneds will attack any Frostbitten on sight. This makes border areas between cold biomes and Nether portals entertaining. You can exploit this by kiting one toward the other to let them damage each other before you finish them off.

Can I increase how often the rare mobs spawn?

Yes. The mod's config file lets you adjust every mob's spawn weight independently. Dead Beard defaults to a weight of 1 (extremely rare) and the Immortal to 2.5%. You can increase Dead Beard's weight to any number and raise the Immortal's chance up to a maximum value. The config is accessible in-game via Mod Menu on Fabric, or by editing the config file in the mods config folder on Forge.
