Aether Villages Mod Guide: Olympic Citadels, Loot & Custom Potions

Aether Villages adds grand Olympic Citadels to the Aether dimension, giving explorers a reason to venture through Skyroot Forests and Meadows. These sprawling jigsaw-generated structures contain multiple loot tiers, including two unique custom potions you won't find anywhere else.

Overview

Aether Villages is an addon for the Aether mod that populates the otherwise empty Aether dimension with grand structures called Olympic Citadels. These massive, multi-part complexes generate naturally in Skyroot Forest and Skyroot Meadow biomes, giving you a real reason to explore the floating islands beyond just gathering resources.

The mod doesn't add new items, blocks, or mobs to the game. Instead, it focuses entirely on world generation, placing elaborate temple-like structures filled with loot chests across three tiers: normal, treasure, and supply. The supply chests are particularly noteworthy because they contain two custom potions, Wine and Ambrosia, that you can't obtain any other way. You can browse the full details using the tabs on this page.

Prerequisites

Aether Villages requires the Aether mod (version 1.0.0 or later) to be installed. You need to have already built a Glowstone Portal and entered the Aether dimension before you'll encounter anything this mod adds. If you haven't reached the Aether yet, focus on gathering 10 Glowstone blocks, building a portal frame in the standard Nether Portal shape, and activating it with a Water Bucket.

Getting Started

  1. 1

    Enter the Aether Dimension

Build and activate your Glowstone Portal to enter the Aether. Olympic Citadels generate during world creation, so they'll already be waiting for you in any newly generated Aether chunks.

  2. 2

Head for Skyroot Forests and Meadows

Olympic Citadels only spawn in Skyroot Forest and Skyroot Meadow biomes. These are the most common Aether biomes, so you shouldn't have to travel far. Look for large, temple-like structures rising from the floating islands.

  3. 3

    Explore the Citadel Structure

Olympic Citadels are jigsaw-generated structures composed of a central main building, surrounding decorative sections, floating island extensions, and villager areas. Take your time exploring every room and level, as loot chests are scattered throughout.

  4. 4

    Loot the Chests

Search for chests across all three loot tiers. Normal and treasure chests contain valuable resources like Diamonds, Gold Ingots, and tools. Supply chests are the real prize, containing food supplies and the exclusive Wine and Ambrosia potions.

  5. 5

    Save Ambrosia for Boss Fights

The Ambrosia potion provides Resistance III, Absorption III, and Regeneration III for 35 seconds. This is incredibly powerful and should be saved for Aether boss encounters like the Slider or Valkyrie Queen rather than used casually.

The Olympic Citadel

The Olympic Citadel is the sole structure added by this mod, and it's an impressive one. Built using Minecraft's jigsaw generation system, each Citadel is assembled from over 30 individual structural pieces: a main temple building, numerous decorative sections, floating island platforms, and villager quarters. This means that while every Citadel shares the same grand architectural style, the exact layout varies from one to the next.

Citadels generate at a fixed altitude of Y=100 in the Aether, placing them prominently on floating islands where they're visible from a distance. The structure uses random spread placement with a spacing of 70 chunks and a minimum separation of 65 chunks between instances. In practical terms, you'll find roughly one Citadel every 1,000 to 1,100 blocks of travel. They also suppress hostile mob spawning within their boundaries, making them safe havens for exploration.

Structure Layout

Each Citadel consists of a central main structure surrounded by decorative wings and connected floating island platforms. The jigsaw system can pull from 31 different decorative pieces, up to 10 island variants, and a villager section. The maximum distance from the center is 80 blocks, so these are truly large complexes. Be thorough when exploring, as it's easy to miss side rooms and hidden areas among the many decorative sections.

Finding Citadels Faster

You can use the /locate structure aether_villages:olympic_citadel command to find the nearest Olympic Citadel. This saves a lot of aimless wandering through the Aether, especially on servers where chunks have already been generated.

Loot Tables

Olympic Citadels contain three categories of loot chests, each with different contents and purposes. Every chest draws from multiple loot pools simultaneously, so you'll get a variety of items from each one.

Normal and Treasure Chests

These chests share the same loot table and draw from three pools. The first pool (1-2 rolls with 7 bonus rolls) favors Gold Nuggets (3-15), but can also yield Glistering Melon Slices (1-3), Golden Carrots (1-5), or a Golden Apple. The second pool guarantees one of: Stone (1-3), Diamonds (1-3), Gold Ingots (2-7), or Iron Ingots (2-7). The third pool gives you one tool or utility item: a Diamond Hoe, Iron Pickaxe, Iron Sword, Golden Axe, Glowstone (4-10), or a Water Bucket.

Supply Chests

Supply chests are the most interesting finds in the Citadel. Along with the same gold-themed first pool as the other chests, they include a unique potion pool and a generous food pool. The potion pool guarantees either a Wine or an Ambrosia potion, both of which are custom items exclusive to this mod. The food pool rolls 2-3 times and can provide Baked Potatoes (7-16), Melon Slices (4-10), Bread (1-8), Cooked Beef (1-3), Blue Orchids, Golden Carrots (1-4), or Suspicious Stew.

Wine Has a Downside

While Wine grants Jump Boost III and Luck III for 35 seconds, it also inflicts Nausea IV for 15 seconds. Don't drink it near cliff edges or during combat. Wait until the Nausea wears off before doing anything risky on the floating islands.

Custom Potions

The two custom potions found in Supply chests are the standout feature of this mod. They cannot be brewed, traded for, or obtained in any other way, making Supply chests the only source in the entire game.

Wine

Wine is a custom Potion with a deep purple color. It provides Jump Boost III for 35 seconds and Luck III for 35 seconds, making it useful for reaching high places and improving loot rolls from fishing or mob drops. However, it also inflicts Nausea IV for 15 seconds, simulating the effects of actual intoxication. The Nausea wears off well before the beneficial effects end, so the tradeoff is worthwhile if you can handle the disorientation.

Ambrosia

Ambrosia is the more powerful of the two potions, with a golden color fitting its mythological namesake. It grants Resistance III, Absorption III, and Regeneration III, all lasting 35 seconds. This combination makes you nearly invincible for the duration: Resistance III reduces incoming damage by 60%, Absorption III adds 8 temporary hearts, and Regeneration III rapidly restores health. This is by far the best consumable you can find in the Aether dimension.

World Generation Details

Olympic Citadels use Minecraft's jigsaw structure system, which means they're assembled from a pool of modular pieces during world generation. The structure starts with a central main building and then attaches decorative wings, floating island platforms, and villager quarters through jigsaw connections. With a maximum jigsaw depth of 7 and a maximum distance of 80 blocks from center, these structures can extend quite far.

The placement algorithm uses random spread with a spacing of 70 chunks (1,120 blocks) and a minimum separation of 65 chunks (1,040 blocks). This means Citadels are relatively rare but consistent in their distribution. They generate at an absolute height of Y=100, which places them prominently on the Aether's floating islands. Hostile mob spawning is suppressed within the full bounding box of the structure, so you won't encounter any Aether mobs inside.

Compatible Biomes

Olympic Citadels only generate in Skyroot Forest and Skyroot Meadow biomes. You won't find them in other Aether biomes like Golden Oak Forest or Crystal Forest. Stick to areas with standard Skyroot Trees for the best chances.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Olympic Citadels generate in existing worlds?

Yes, but only in chunks that haven't been generated yet. If you've already explored most of your Aether dimension, you'll need to travel to new, unvisited areas. Alternatively, you can start a fresh world to guarantee Citadels appear near spawn.

How far apart are Olympic Citadels?

Citadels have a spacing of 70 chunks (1,120 blocks) and a minimum separation of 65 chunks (1,040 blocks). Expect to travel roughly 1,000 blocks between each one.

Can I brew Wine or Ambrosia potions?

No. Wine and Ambrosia are custom potions that can only be found in Supply chests within Olympic Citadels. There is no brewing recipe for either potion. They are loot-exclusive items.

Does this mod work without the Aether mod?

No. The Aether mod is a mandatory dependency. Aether Villages generates structures specifically in Aether dimension biomes (Skyroot Forest and Skyroot Meadow), which only exist when the Aether mod is installed.

Are there any mobs or villagers in the Citadels?

The structure data includes a villager section template, suggesting villager spawning is planned or partially implemented. The mod description mentions custom villager types as a future feature. Currently, the Citadels suppress hostile mob spawning within their boundaries, making them safe to explore.

Is Aether Villages compatible with other Aether addons?

Aether Villages only modifies world generation by adding a new structure set. It doesn't alter existing Aether content, so it should be compatible with other Aether addons. The mod's structures reference standard Aether biome tags, so any addon that doesn't remove or rename Skyroot Forest and Skyroot Meadow biomes will work fine alongside it.
