Create: Bells & Whistles Mod Guide: Train Decorations, Pilots & Metro Blocks

Create: Bells & Whistles is a decorative addon for Create that fills the gap between functional trains and beautiful ones. It adds Pilots (cowcatchers), Metro building blocks, Grab Bars, Bogie Steps, Door Steps, Headlights, and Station Platforms, all designed to make your Create trains and stations look fantastic.

Overview

Create: Bells & Whistles is a focused addon that gives you the decorative pieces Create's train system is missing. If you've ever built a train in Create and wished it looked less like a box on rails and more like an actual locomotive, this mod is exactly what you need. It adds 41 blocks across several categories: Pilots (cowcatchers) for the front of your trains, Metro building blocks for station and carriage interiors, Grab Bars and Steps for realistic train detailing, Headlights for illumination, and Station Platforms for proper stops.

Every block in this mod is designed to work with Create's existing material tiers: Andesite, Brass, and Copper. Many blocks also support the Wrench for easy rotation. You can browse all 41 items and 53 recipes using the tabs at the top of this page.

Prerequisites

This mod requires Create 0.5.1d or later on Fabric (with Fabric API). All recipes use Create materials like Andesite Alloy, Brass Ingots, Brass Nuggets, Copper Sheets, and Iron Sheets, so you'll need a functioning Create setup before most of these blocks become available. At minimum, you should have a Mixer and Mechanical Press for producing Andesite Alloy and Brass. Some recipes also use a Stonecutter as an alternative crafting method.

Getting Started

  1. 1

    Gather Create Materials

Before crafting any Bells & Whistles blocks, make sure you have a supply of Andesite Alloy, Iron Sheets, Copper Ingots, and Brass Ingots. These are the core materials for nearly every recipe in the mod. If you're early in your Create playthrough, start with Andesite-tier items since Andesite Alloy only requires Andesite and Iron or Zinc.

  2. 2

    Craft Your First Pilot

Pilots are the signature block of this mod. Start with an Andesite Pilot, which only requires Andesite and Andesite Alloy. Place it on the front of your train contraption facing outward. Pilots are directional blocks that face away from you when placed, and they can be rotated with a Wrench.

  3. 3

    Add Train Detailing

Craft some Grab Bars and Bogie Steps in the same metal tier as your Pilot. Grab Bars attach to walls like ladders and give trains a realistic handrail look. Bogie Steps extend below the block they're placed on, creating proper entry steps for carriages. Door Steps are thin ledges that sit at foot level near doorways.

  4. 4

    Build a Metro Station

Use Metro Casing (Iron Sheets + Green Dye) as your base building block for station interiors and train walls. Then craft Metro Panels for thin wall sections, Metro Windows for see-through panels, and Metro Trapdoors for access hatches. Corrugated variants add visual texture for variety. Top off your station with Station Platforms made from Smooth Stone.

  5. 5

    Light It Up

Craft Headlights from Iron Nuggets and a Torch. These compact lights can be placed on walls, floors, or ceilings, making them perfect for train fronts, carriage interiors, and station lighting. They're one of the cheapest blocks in the mod and extremely useful.

Pilots (Cowcatchers)

Pilots are the most iconic addition in Bells & Whistles. These wedge-shaped blocks mount to the front of your trains and give them that classic locomotive cowcatcher look. The mod includes 18 Pilot variants split across two categories: metal Pilots and polished stone Pilots.

Metal Pilots

There are four metal Pilots matching Create's material progression. The Metal Pilot uses Iron Sheets and Iron Nuggets, giving a utilitarian steel look. The Andesite Pilot uses Andesite and Andesite Alloy for an early-game option. The Brass Pilot and Copper Pilot use their respective Sheets and Nuggets. All metal Pilots follow the same crafting pattern: two Sheets (or Alloy) in the middle column, with four Nuggets (or base material) filling the corners.

Polished Stone Pilots

For a more refined aesthetic, 14 polished stone Pilots are available. These use polished stone materials from both vanilla Minecraft and Create. Vanilla options include Polished Andesite, Polished Granite, Polished Diorite, Polished Deepslate, Polished Dripstone, Polished Tuff, and Polished Calcite. Create's stone types are also represented with Polished Limestone, Polished Scoria, Polished Scorchia, Polished Crimsite, Polished Ochrum, Polished Veridium, and Polished Asurine variants. Each is crafted from its respective Polished Cut Stairs and Polished Cut blocks in the same 6-block pattern.

Pilots are directional blocks that face the direction opposite to where you're looking when placed. They support Wrench rotation, making it easy to adjust their orientation after placement. Their hitbox extends slightly beyond a single block, giving them that distinctive protruding wedge shape.

Matching Your Build Palette

Polished stone Pilots pair beautifully with Create's polished stone variants for building ornate locomotive fronts. Try mixing a Polished Deepslate Pilot with Polished Deepslate walls for a dark, industrial engine look.

Train Accessories

Grab Bars

Grab Bars are wall-mounted railings available in Andesite, Brass, and Copper. They attach to walls like ladders and render with a transparent cutout layer, so you can see through their frame. These are perfect for lining the interior walls of train carriages or marking boarding areas on platforms. Each variant can be crafted at either a Crafting Table (yielding 8) or a Stonecutter (yielding 4 from a single Ingot or Alloy).

Bogie Steps

Bogie Steps are ladder-type blocks that extend below their placement point, creating steps that hang down from train carriages. They're designed to look like the folding steps on real train bogies. Available in Andesite, Brass, and Copper, they render with a cutout layer for a detailed metalwork appearance. The Stonecutter recipes give 3-4 per Ingot, while the Crafting Table recipes yield 6.

Door Steps

Door Steps are thin, narrow ledges that sit at the base of doorways. They're only half a pixel thick and extend outward from the wall they're attached to. Like the other accessories, they come in Andesite, Brass, and Copper variants. Stonecutter recipes yield 6 per Ingot, while Crafting Table recipes produce 8.

Metro Building Blocks

The Metro block family gives you a complete set of building materials for constructing subway-style trains and stations. Everything starts with Metro Casing, which is crafted from Iron Sheets and Green Dye (4 per craft). From there, you can create panels, windows, and trapdoors for a cohesive transit system look.

Metro Casing & Corrugated Metro Casing

Metro Casing is a full casing block (based on Create's Casing system) with a smooth green-and-white metro finish. Corrugated Metro Casing is a textured variant with a ridged surface, crafted by placing a Metro Casing alone in the crafting grid. The conversion is reversible. Both work as standard building blocks and can be used as the foundation for larger Metro structures.

Metro Panels & Windows

Metro Panels are thin 3-pixel-thick panels that can be placed on any face of a block, including floors and ceilings. They're crafted in bulk (16 from 3 Metro Casings) and are ideal for wall cladding and dividers. Corrugated Metro Panels provide a ridged texture variant and can be converted back and forth with standard panels. Metro Windows are transparent panels made from Metro Casing and Glass (6 per craft), rendering with a cutout layer so light passes through.

Metro Trapdoor

The Metro Trapdoor functions like a standard trapdoor but matches the Metro aesthetic. It's crafted from 2 Metro Casings, producing 6 trapdoors. Use these for access hatches in train floors, maintenance panels, or venting details on station walls.

Corrugated Variants Are Reversible

Both Metro Casing and Metro Panels can be freely converted to and from their corrugated variants. Just place one in the crafting grid to toggle the texture. This means you never waste materials experimenting with which look you prefer.

Utility Blocks

Headlight

The Headlight is a compact light source that can be mounted on walls, placed on the floor, or attached to ceilings. It's crafted cheaply from 3 Iron Nuggets and a Torch, producing 2 Headlights per craft. The block has a small hitbox (roughly 8x8 pixels) and emits light, making it ideal for train fronts, carriage interiors, and station accent lighting. Its lantern-like material properties mean it breaks quickly and drops itself.

Ornate Iron Trapdoor

This decorative trapdoor is crafted from two Ornate Iron Windows (a base Create block), yielding 6 trapdoors. It renders with a cutout layer for an intricate metalwork look and uses Iron Door material properties. It's a great accent piece for Victorian or industrial-themed builds.

Station Platform

Station Platforms are directional blocks that create a raised edge along one side, simulating the raised platform edge you'd see at a real train station. They're crafted from Smooth Stone (either shapeless with a Smooth Stone Slab and Smooth Stone, or via Stonecutter). The block's shape extends about half the block width with a stepped profile, making it perfect for lining the edges of your station platforms where passengers board.

Material Tiers at a Glance

Most Bells & Whistles blocks follow Create's three-tier material system. The table below shows which blocks are available in each tier and the key crafting ingredient for each. There are no stat differences between tiers; the choice is purely aesthetic, so pick whichever matches your build palette.

Stonecutter Yields Less

While Stonecutter recipes are more convenient (single ingredient, no grid layout), they yield fewer items than Crafting Table recipes. For example, Andesite Bogie Steps give 4 from the Stonecutter but 6 from the Crafting Table. If you're building at scale, use the Crafting Table recipes for better material efficiency.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Create: Bells & Whistles work with Create Fabric or just Forge?

This version of the mod is built for Fabric and requires Create 0.5.1d for Fabric (via the Create Fabric port). Check the mod's CurseForge or Modrinth page for the latest version compatibility, as Forge ports may be available separately.

Can I place Pilots on moving Create contraptions?

Yes. Pilots, like all blocks in this mod, can be part of Create contraptions. Place them on your train assembly before activating it, and they'll move with the train. They implement Create's IWrenchable interface, so you can adjust their facing with a Wrench even while building on a stationary contraption.

Why are there so many Pilot variants?

The 18 Pilot variants exist to match every polished stone type in both vanilla Minecraft and Create. This means no matter what building materials you're using for your train or station, there's a Pilot that matches. The metal Pilots (Iron, Andesite, Brass, Copper) match Create's functional metal blocks, while the stone Pilots match decorative stonework.

Can Headlights be placed on ceilings?

Yes. Headlights support wall, floor, and ceiling placement. The block automatically adjusts its orientation and hitbox depending on where you place it. This makes them versatile for interior train lighting, station ceiling fixtures, and decorative wall sconces.

What's the difference between Metro Panels and Corrugated Metro Panels?

The only difference is the texture. Corrugated variants have a ridged surface pattern while standard panels are smooth. They have identical hitboxes and properties. You can freely convert between them by placing one in a Crafting Table, so there's no cost to experimenting.

Do any of these blocks have special functionality or are they all decorative?

The blocks are primarily decorative, but several have functional properties. Headlights emit light. Grab Bars and Bogie Steps function as climbable ladders (they extend Create's Metal Ladder block). Metro Windows and Ornate Iron Trapdoors operate as functional trapdoors that can be opened and closed. Station Platforms have directional collision boxes that create a proper raised edge.
