Bosses of Mass Destruction Mod Guide: All Four Bosses, Loot & Summoning Mechanics
Bosses of Mass Destruction adds four challenging boss encounters to Minecraft, each with unique arenas, attack patterns, and valuable loot. From the undead Lich in its towering spire to the massive Void Blossom lurking in underground caverns, these fights demand preparation and skill. The mod also introduces powerful reward items like the Earthdive Spear and Levitation Block.
Overview
Bosses of Mass Destruction adds four powerful boss mobs to Minecraft, each found in its own unique structure scattered across the world. These bosses are designed to be fought after you've geared up with Diamond or Netherite equipment, and each one drops exclusive crafting materials used to create powerful utility items and blocks. The mod also introduces functional reward blocks like the
Mob Ward,
Monolith Block, and Levitation Block that provide lasting benefits to your base and surrounding area.
You can browse all items and recipes this mod adds using the tabs at the top of this page. This guide focuses on where to find each boss, how to prepare for and defeat them, and what you can do with the loot they drop.
Getting Started
- 1
Gear Up Properly
Before seeking out any boss, you should have at minimum a full set of Diamond armor (preferably enchanted with Protection), a Diamond or Netherite sword, a bow with plenty of arrows, healing food like Golden Apples, and Potions of Healing or Regeneration. These bosses hit hard and have substantial health pools.
- 2
Hunt Undead Mobs for a Soul Star
The Lich is the most accessible boss to start with. To find its tower, you need a
Soul Star. Soul Stars drop from undead mobs (Zombies, Skeletons, Drowned, Husks, Strays, Phantoms, Wither Skeletons, and others) after you've killed 50 total undead mobs. Once a Soul Star drops, use it like an Eye of Ender to locate the nearest Lich Tower. - 3
Defeat Your First Boss
Travel to the Lich Tower and place Soul Stars on the Chiseled Stone Altars inside. Once enough altars are filled (4 total across the structure), the Lich spawns. Defeat it to earn crafting materials like
Ancient Anima and
Blazing Eye. - 4
Craft Reward Items
Boss drops like
Ancient Anima,
Blazing Eye,
Obsidian Heart, and
Void Thorn are used to craft unique items. The
Mob Ward prevents hostile mob spawns in a 64-block radius, the Levitation Block grants nearby players creative flight, and the
Earthdive Spear lets you teleport through walls. Check the Recipes tab for all crafting recipes. - 5
Take On Harder Bosses
Explore the Nether to find the Gauntlet Arena, search the End for the Obsidilith Arena, and delve deep underground for the Void Blossom Cavern. Each boss requires different strategies and offers different materials. You can use
Brimstone Nectar to repair boss structures if you want to fight them again.
The Lich (Overworld)
The Lich is an undead sorcerer that inhabits a tall tower structure in the Overworld. With 300 HP and a follow range of 64 blocks, it is an aggressive and relentless opponent. When the Lich spawns, it forces the world into permanent nighttime for the duration of the fight, which means Phantoms and other undead mobs will also be active. The Lich drops 1,500 experience points on death.
Finding the Lich Tower
To locate a Lich Tower, you need a
Soul Star. These are obtained by killing undead mobs. After killing a cumulative total of 50 undead creatures (Zombies, Skeletons, Drowned, Husks, Strays, Phantoms, Wither Skeletons, Zombie Villagers, Zombified Piglins, and more), a Soul Star will drop from the 50th kill. Every 50 undead kills after that will drop another one. Throw the Soul Star into the air like an Eye of Ender, and it will fly toward the nearest Lich Tower.
Summoning the Lich
Inside and around the Lich Tower, you'll find Chiseled Stone Altars. Right-click an altar with a
Soul Star to place it, causing the altar to light up with blue flames. The altars are positioned in a ring pattern around a central altar, with pairs at distances of 12 and 6 blocks in cardinal and diagonal directions. Once 4 altars have been activated with Soul Stars, the Lich spawns after a short delay, and all activated altars are destroyed.
Combat Strategy
The Lich has several attack phases that intensify as its health drops. At full health, it fires Magic Missiles that deal 9.0 damage and inflict Slowness III for 5 seconds, making dodging subsequent attacks difficult. It can also launch Comets with an explosion strength of 4.0 (equivalent to TNT) and summon undead minions. The Lich has rage mode transitions at 75%, 50%, and 25% health, where it gains access to more powerful versions of its attacks. Between these milestones, it passively regenerates 0.2 HP per tick when not actively targeting a player.
The Lich can teleport, and if you try to hide behind cover and break line of sight, it will teleport to your position. A bow is essential for this fight since the Lich often hovers out of melee range. When it kills all Phantoms in a 100-block radius upon death, any remaining nighttime threats are cleaned up.
Bring a Shield to block Magic Missiles, and consider Milk Buckets to clear the Slowness debuff. Since the fight forces nighttime, place Torches around the arena to prevent additional hostile mob spawns from interfering with the boss fight.
The Gauntlet (Nether)
The Gauntlet is a massive construct found in a dedicated arena in the Nether. It has 250 HP, 8.0 armor, deals 16.0 attack damage, and is immune to fire, Wither, and Poison effects. It has a 48-block follow range and drops 1,000 experience on death. When not targeting a player, the Gauntlet has an increased armor value of 24 and passively heals at 0.5 HP per tick.
Summoning the Gauntlet
The Gauntlet Arena contains a structure made of Gauntlet Blackstone blocks. To summon the boss, simply break one of the outer Gauntlet Blackstone blocks. The game checks for a center block adjacent to the one you broke, and once found, the Gauntlet spawns at that center position. The entire Blackstone structure then progressively destroys itself layer by layer from bottom to top.
Combat Strategy
The Gauntlet is a melee-heavy boss with multiple attack patterns including punches, ground pounds, a devastating laser eye attack, a swirl punch, and an energized punch with an explosion size of 4.5 blocks. Normal punches apply an explosion multiplier of 1.5x. The Gauntlet has multipart hitboxes, meaning you need to aim at specific parts of its body to deal damage effectively. It also has an energy shield mechanic and can inflict Blindness.
Keep your distance during the laser attack and be ready to move laterally. The ground pound attacks have area-of-effect damage, so jumping or maintaining distance is key. On death, the Gauntlet creates a dramatic explosion, spawns 5 veins of Netherrack ending in Ancient Debris blocks, and places a loot Chest above its death location.
When the Gauntlet dies, it replaces blocks in the area with Netherrack veins tipped with Ancient Debris. This can destroy existing builds or terrain, so be aware of your surroundings. The Ancient Debris spawning can be disabled in the config if you prefer.
The Obsidilith (End)
The Obsidilith is a towering golem-like boss found in an arena in the End dimension. With 300 HP, 14.0 armor (the highest of any boss in the mod), and 16.0 attack damage, it is an extremely durable opponent. It is fire immune and cannot be moved horizontally, only vertically. Like the Gauntlet, it has 24 armor when not actively targeting a player and drops 1,000 experience.
Summoning the Obsidilith
The Obsidilith Arena contains an Obsidilith End Frame block. To summon the boss, use an Eye of Ender on this frame block, similar to activating an End Portal Frame. After a delay of 100 ticks (5 seconds), the frame is destroyed and the Obsidilith spawns in its place.
Combat Strategy
The Obsidilith has five distinct attack patterns: Burst (radial area damage), Wave (sweeping ground attack), Spike (targeted ground eruptions), Anvil (explosive falling blocks with 4.0 explosion strength), and Pillar Defense. The Pillar Defense mechanic is critical to understand. At 75%, 50%, and 25% health thresholds, the Obsidilith becomes shielded by nearby Obsidilith Rune blocks. While shielded, it takes reduced damage. You must destroy the glowing Rune pillars around the arena to remove its shield before continuing to deal full damage.
The Obsidilith is immune to Wither and Poison effects. On death, it constructs a 15-block-tall Obsidian pillar topped with a Shulker Box containing loot. The experience is released from the top of this pillar.
The Void Blossom (Underground)
The Void Blossom is the largest and most health-heavy boss in the mod, with 350 HP, 12.0 attack damage, and 4.0 armor. It is an enormous plant-like creature measuring 8 blocks wide and 10 blocks tall, found in a specially generated underground cavern. It is fire immune and has multipart hitboxes, meaning different parts of its body can be targeted independently. When not targeting a player, it has 20 armor and heals 0.5 HP per tick. It drops 1,000 experience.
Finding the Void Blossom
Void Lily flowers can be found growing on the surface. These special plants emit particles that point toward the nearest Void Blossom Cavern. Follow the particle trail direction to locate the cavern entrance. The cavern itself is a lush underground space decorated with Moss, Spore Blossoms, and custom spike formations. When a player enters within 40 blocks of the Void Blossom's spawn block, the boss appears.
Combat Strategy
The Void Blossom has the most complex attack patterns of any boss in the mod. Its attacks include ground Spikes, Spike Waves (sweeping area attacks), Spore Ball projectiles, Petal Blade projectiles, and a Blossom heal phase. The Blossom attack spawns Void Blossom flowers around the arena that heal the boss over time. Destroying these flowers quickly is critical, as each flower heals the boss by 10.0 HP per cycle with a 64-tick interval.
Like other bosses, the Void Blossom has health stage transitions at 75%, 50%, and 25% HP. Below 75% health, it gains access to the Spore Ball attack. Below 50%, Petal Blade projectiles become available. Its attack patterns become more varied and dangerous as the fight progresses, so frontloading your damage output is important.
The Void Blossom flowers placed around the arena are surrounded by Vine Wall blocks. These temporary walls break on their own after a delay but can be manually destroyed to reach the healing flowers faster. Prioritize destroying flowers to prevent the boss from recovering health between phases.

Boss Drop Materials
Each boss drops unique crafting materials that are used to create the mod's reward items. All drop materials have the Rare rarity (blue name text) and are fire resistant, meaning they won't be destroyed if they fall into Lava.
Ancient Anima
A rare crafting material used in several key recipes including the
Mob Ward, Levitation Block, and
Charged Ender Pearl. It is the most versatile drop material in the mod.
Blazing Eye
Used in crafting the Levitation Block and the
Monolith Block. This fire-resistant material is found in boss loot chests.
Obsidian Heart
A key ingredient for the
Mob Ward,
Earthdive Spear, and
Monolith Block. Like the
Blazing Eye, it is fire resistant.
Void Thorn
Used to craft the
Earthdive Spear and the
Charged Ender Pearl. This material comes from the Void Blossom encounter.
Reward Items
Earthdive Spear
The
Earthdive Spear is a weapon with 9 attack damage (8.0 base + 1.0 hand damage), an attack speed of 1.1 (modifier of -2.9), and 250 durability. Beyond being a solid melee weapon, its unique ability lets you teleport through walls. Hold right-click to charge the spear, and after 10 ticks (0.5 seconds), it scans in the direction you're looking for a wall to phase through. If it finds a valid teleport destination on the other side of a solid block, you teleport there. This makes it invaluable for navigating caves, escaping tight spaces, or reaching areas that would otherwise require mining.
Charged Ender Pearl
An enhanced Ender Pearl that teleports you on impact without dealing fall damage. On landing, it grants Resistance II for 6 seconds and Slow Falling for 1 second, and it knocks back all nearby entities within a 3-block radius. It has a 9-second cooldown (180 ticks) and does not stack, so you can only carry one at a time. Unlike regular Ender Pearls, the
Charged Ender Pearl is fire resistant.
Crystal Fruit
A powerful food item that provides 4 hunger points and 1.2 saturation modifier. More importantly, eating it grants three beneficial effects: Regeneration II for 15 seconds, Instant Health, and Resistance I for 30 seconds. It can be eaten at any time regardless of hunger level (the "always edible" property), making it an excellent emergency healing item during boss fights.
Reward Blocks
Mob Ward
The
Mob Ward is a three-block-tall decorative pillar that prevents hostile mob spawning in a 64-block cube around it. It emits blue soul flame particles from its top and provides a light level of 15. The ward works by checking a 4-chunk radius around itself and blocking natural mob spawns within range. This is one of the most practical items in the mod for base defense, effectively replacing the need for extensive Torch placement or mob-proofing.
Levitation Block (Table of Elevation)
The Levitation Block grants creative-mode flight to players standing within its radius. The default radius is 3 chunks (configurable from 1 to 32 via the config), which means a single Levitation Block can cover a large area around your base. It uses a custom animated model and emits particles around flying players. When a player leaves the affected area, their flight ability is automatically revoked (unless they are in Creative or Spectator mode).
Monolith Block
The
Monolith Block is a two-block-tall structure that increases explosion power by 30% for all explosions within a 64-block radius. This affects TNT, Creeper explosions, and any other explosion source. It's a niche but powerful tool for farms that rely on explosion mechanics or for defending areas where Creeper damage needs to be amplified.
Void Lily
A small flower crafted from a Lily of the Valley and an Amethyst Shard. When placed, it emits pollen particles that point toward the nearest Void Blossom Cavern structure. It functions as a compass for finding the underground boss arena. The particles follow sinuous trails in the direction of the structure, making it easy to determine which way to travel.
Brimstone Nectar & Structure Repair
Brimstone Nectar is a unique item crafted from a Netherite Scrap, Dragon Breath, and a Ghast Tear. When used inside a boss arena (Lich Tower, Gauntlet Arena, Obsidilith Arena, or Void Blossom Cavern), it repairs the boss structure, allowing you to fight the boss again. This is the only way to respawn bosses without finding a new structure. The item has a 4-second cooldown (80 ticks) after use and is consumed in the process (unless the player is in Creative mode).
Configuration Options
The mod is highly configurable through its config file. Each boss has individual settings for health, armor, attack damage, idle healing rate, and experience drop amounts. The Lich's eternal nighttime effect can be toggled off, the Gauntlet's Ancient Debris death spawn can be disabled, and the Obsidilith's death pillar can be turned off. The Lich's summoning mechanic is also configurable: you can change which entities count toward the
Soul Star kill counter, and adjust how many kills are required (default 50). The Lich's missile effect (Slowness by default) can be changed to any mob effect, with adjustable duration and amplifier. The Levitation Block's radius is configurable from 1 to 32 chunks.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a Soul Star to find the Lich?
Kill undead mobs (Zombies, Skeletons, Drowned, Husks, Strays, Phantoms, Wither Skeletons, Zombie Villagers, Zombified Piglins, etc.). After every 50 cumulative undead kills, the next kill will drop a
Soul Star. The count is tracked per player across all undead types. Throw it in the air to locate the nearest Lich Tower.
Can I fight the bosses again after defeating them?
Yes. Craft
Brimstone Nectar (Netherite Scrap + Dragon Breath + Ghast Tear) and use it inside the boss arena to repair the structure and respawn the boss. Alternatively, you can locate a new boss structure that hasn't been activated yet.
Why is the Obsidilith not taking damage?
The Obsidilith becomes shielded at 75%, 50%, and 25% HP milestones when Obsidilith Rune pillars are active nearby. You need to find and destroy the glowing rune pillars in the arena to remove the shield. Look for purple particle beams connecting the boss to the pillars to identify which ones are active.
How do I find the Void Blossom cavern?
Craft a
Void Lily (Lily of the Valley + Amethyst Shard) and place it on the ground. It produces pollen particles that point toward the nearest Void Blossom Cavern. Follow the direction the particles travel. You can also find Void Lilies growing naturally in the world.
What does the Earthdive Spear do?
Beyond being a melee weapon with 9 attack damage, the
Earthdive Spear lets you teleport through solid walls. Hold right-click to charge it for 0.5 seconds, then it scans in the direction you're looking. If there's a wall with open space on the other side, you teleport through it. This works through any solid block and is incredibly useful for cave exploration.
Do the bosses despawn if I walk away?
No. All four bosses are set to prevent despawning (except on Peaceful difficulty, where they are removed). Once spawned, they persist until killed. However, they will passively heal when they don't have a target player, so leaving and coming back may mean the boss has recovered some health.
