Croptopia Mod Guide: All Crops, Tree Fruits, Recipes & Cooking Utensils

Croptopia adds 58 ground crops, 26 fruit trees, and over 250 food recipes to Minecraft. From simple salads and juices to elaborate pizzas, tamales, and ice cream, every crop you grow can be turned into something delicious using the mod's four cooking utensils. This guide covers how to find seeds, grow every crop type, and cook your way through the entire recipe list.

Overview

Croptopia is a farming and food mod that dramatically expands Minecraft's agriculture system. It adds 58 ground crops that grow on tilled Farmland, 26 fruit tree varieties that spawn naturally across different biomes, and over 250 cooked food items ranging from simple snacks to elaborate multi-ingredient meals. The mod also introduces Salt Ore, Cinnamon Trees with their own wood type, and four reusable cooking utensils that unlock the full recipe catalog.

Food items in Croptopia restore between 1 and 18 hunger points depending on their complexity. Raw crops and simple ingredients generally restore 1 to 3 hunger, while complex cooked dishes like Supreme Pizza and Tres Leche Cake restore up to 18 hunger with high saturation. This means investing time in cooking pays off significantly compared to eating raw ingredients. You can browse every item and recipe the mod adds using the tabs at the top of this page.

Getting Started with Croptopia

  1. 1

    Get Your First Seeds

In versions 1.16 and 1.17, break Tall Grass and Ferns in Plains, Swamp, Savannah, Forest, and Taiga biomes to find Croptopia seeds. By default, you need to use a Hoe to get seed drops (this can be changed in the config). Each seed type is tied to a specific biome category, so explore different biomes to collect them all. The base drop chance per seed type is 1.25%.

  2. 2

    Craft Your Cooking Utensils

Before you can cook most recipes, you need to craft the four cooking utensils: the Cooking Pot, Frying Pan, Food Press, and Mortar and Pestle. All four have 500 durability and are not consumed when used in crafting. They take damage per use but can last through hundreds of recipes. The Frying Pan doubles as a weapon with 3 attack damage.

  3. 3

    Plant Your First Crops

Plant seeds on tilled Farmland just like vanilla crops. Most Croptopia crops are standard single-block height, but Corn is a special tall crop that grows two blocks high. All crops can be harvested by right-clicking when fully grown, which drops the produce and resets the crop to an earlier growth stage without replanting.

  4. 4

    Find Fruit Trees

Fruit trees spawn naturally in the world. Look for them in Forest biomes (Apple, Lemon, Cherry, Plum, Orange, Pear, Lime, Apricot, Avocado, Star Fruit, Persimmon, Nectarine), Jungle biomes (Banana, Coconut, Mango, Date, Dragon Fruit, Fig, Grapefruit, Kumquat, Nutmeg, Cinnamon), Plains biomes (Apple, Orange, Peach), and Dark Forest biomes (Almond, Cashew, Pecan, Walnut). Right-click ripe fruit on tree leaves to harvest them.

  5. 5

    Craft the Guide Book

If you have Patchouli installed, combine three Croptopia crops with a Book to craft the Croptopia Guide. This in-game book contains all recipes organized by category, making it invaluable if you don't have JEI or REI installed. Keep it in your inventory while cooking to quickly look up what you need.

Seed Biome Categories

Each seed type drops from Grass in specific biome categories. For example, Tomato and Strawberry Seeds drop in Swamp biomes, Coffee and Eggplant Seeds in Jungle biomes, and Corn and Lettuce Seeds in Plains biomes. Check the config file at config/croptopia/options.json to see or change which biome each seed drops in and its drop chance.

Cooking Utensils

Croptopia's cooking system revolves around four reusable utensils. Each one has 500 durability and takes damage when used in a crafting recipe, but they are never consumed outright. You craft them from Iron Ingots and basic materials, making them accessible early in a playthrough.

Cooking Pot

The Cooking Pot is used for soups, stews, boiled dishes, jams, noodles, and many other recipes. It is crafted from 5 Iron Ingots in a helmet-like pattern. This is the most frequently used utensil across Croptopia's recipe catalog, required for Cheese, Butter, Tofu, Chocolate, Noodles, Dough, all nine Jam varieties, and dozens of cooked meals.

Frying Pan

The Frying Pan handles fried foods, grilled items, and baked goods. It is also crafted from 5 Iron Ingots but in a different pattern. Uniquely, the Frying Pan doubles as a melee weapon with 3 attack damage and -2.4 attack speed (similar to an Iron Sword's damage but slower). Recipes include Fried Chicken, Pizza, Hamburger, Brownies, Potato Chips, and various pies.

Food Press

The Food Press extracts liquids from ingredients. It is crafted from 2 Pistons and a Hopper, making it slightly more expensive than the other utensils. All juices (Apple, Orange, Grape, Cranberry, Saguaro, Tomato, Melon, Pineapple), Coffee, Lemonade, Limeade, Soy Milk, Olive Oil, Soy Sauce, Beer, Wine, and Mead all require the Food Press.

Mortar and Pestle

The Mortar and Pestle is crafted from a Stick and a Bowl. It is the simplest utensil and is used primarily to grind Chile Peppers into Paprika. While it has fewer recipes than the other utensils, Paprika is an ingredient in Pepperoni and Pumpkin Spice Latte, so you will need one eventually.

Ground Crops

Croptopia adds 58 ground crops that work just like vanilla Wheat or Carrots. Plant their seeds on tilled, hydrated Farmland and wait for them to grow through their growth stages. When fully mature, right-click to harvest the crop and automatically reset it to an earlier stage, saving you from replanting. You can convert any harvested crop back into its seed by placing it alone in a Crafting Table.

The full crop list includes vegetables (Artichoke, Asparagus, Bell Pepper, Black Bean, Broccoli, Cabbage, Cantaloupe, Cauliflower, Celery, Corn, Cucumber, Eggplant, Garlic, Green Bean, Green Onion, Honeydew, Kale, Leek, Lettuce, Mustard, Onion, Radish, Rhubarb, Rutabaga, Spinach, Squash, Sweet Potato, Tomatillo, Tomato, Turnip, Yam, Zucchini), fruits and berries (Blackberry, Blueberry, Cranberry, Currant, Elderberry, Grape, Kiwi, Pineapple, Raspberry, Saguaro, Strawberry), grains and legumes (Barley, Black Bean, Coffee Beans, Corn, Hops, Oat, Peanut, Rice, Soybean), and herbs and spices (Basil, Chile Pepper, Ginger, Turmeric, Vanilla).

Most raw crops restore 3 hunger and 0.4 saturation when eaten directly, though some like Artichoke, Barley, Cabbage, Garlic, Green Onion, Coconut, Rice, Soybean, Cashew, and Peanut only restore 1 hunger. A few crops like Hops, Mustard, Vanilla, Chile Pepper, and Turmeric are not edible raw and exist purely as crafting ingredients.

Seed-to-Crop Conversion

Every Croptopia crop can be converted back into its seed by placing it alone in a Crafting Table. This means you never need to save separate seed items; just keep extra crops and convert them as needed. All seeds and saplings are also compostable (seeds at 30% chance, saplings at 50%).

Fruit Trees

Croptopia adds 26 fruit tree varieties that generate naturally in the world. Each tree type spawns in biomes that match its real-world climate. Fruit appears as special leaf blocks mixed into the tree's canopy (roughly 5% of leaves become fruit-bearing). When the fruit is ripe, right-click it to harvest. Unlike ground crops, you cannot get tree fruit seeds from Grass; instead, you need to find the trees in the wild first.

Tree Locations by Biome

Forest biomes contain Apple, Cherry, Lemon, Lime, Orange, Pear, Plum, Apricot, Avocado, Star Fruit, Persimmon, and Nectarine trees. Jungle biomes contain Banana, Coconut, Date, Dragon Fruit, Fig, Grapefruit, Kumquat, Mango, Nutmeg, and Cinnamon trees. Plains biomes have Apple, Orange, and Peach trees. Dark Forest biomes contain nut trees: Almond, Cashew, Pecan, and Walnut.

Growing Your Own Fruit Trees

To grow your own fruit trees, craft a Fruit Sapling by combining two of the same fruit with any vanilla Sapling in a Crafting Table. For example, two Lemons plus an Oak Sapling yields a Lemon Sapling. Plant it on Dirt or Grass and it will grow into a fruit-bearing tree. This is the only way to get a renewable supply of tree fruits at your base.

Base Ingredients and Intermediate Crafting

Many of Croptopia's recipes require intermediate ingredients that you craft first. These building blocks are essential for unlocking the full recipe catalog.

Salt

Salt Ore generates naturally as disk-shaped deposits near Rivers (similar to Clay or Gravel disks). Mine it to get Salt, which is used in dozens of recipes including Cheese, Butter, French Fries, Steamed Rice, and many more. If Salt Ore feels too common or you want to disable it, set "disable-salt-ore" to true in the config.

Flour and Dough

Flour is crafted by combining two "Flourable" items (Wheat or similar grains) in a Crafting Table. Flour is then used with a Cooking Pot and Water Bucket to make Dough, and Dough is the foundation for Pizza, Pies, Ravioli, Tortillas, Egg Rolls, and more. Flour is also used directly in Fried Chicken, Brownies, Onion Rings, Doughnuts, and several other recipes.

Cheese and Butter

Cheese is made with a Cooking Pot, Milk, and Salt. It restores 5 hunger and is used in Pizza, Cheeseburger, Quesadilla, Grilled Cheese, Enchilada, and many other dishes. Butter requires both a Cooking Pot and a Food Press along with Milk and Salt, and is used in Buttered Toast and Almond Brittle.

Other Key Ingredients

Olive Oil (2 Olives in a Food Press) is used in frying recipes like Potato Chips, Kale Chips, and French Fries. Noodles (Cooking Pot, Water, Salt, Flour) go into Chicken and Noodles and Ravioli. Tofu (Cooking Pot, Water, Soybean) serves as a meat substitute. Tortillas (Flour, Frying Pan, Water) are the base for Tacos, Burritos, Tostadas, Enchiladas, and Quesadillas. Chocolate (Cocoa Beans, Butter, Cooking Pot) produces 8 per craft and is used in Brownies, Milkshakes, Protein Bars, and Trail Mix.

Food Categories and Recipes

Croptopia's 250+ food items span a huge variety of real-world cuisines and categories. Here is a breakdown of the major recipe families and what makes each one worth cooking.

Juices and Drinks (5 Hunger)

All juices are made with a Glass Bottle, the fruit, and a Food Press. They restore 5 hunger and 0.5 saturation. Available flavors include Apple, Orange, Grape, Cranberry, Saguaro, Tomato, Melon, Pineapple, and Lemon (as Lemonade). Coffee is also pressed from Coffee Beans and a Glass Bottle. Soy Milk is made by pressing Soybeans. These are great early-game food sources since they only require one crop type plus a Food Press.

Smoothies and Alcoholic Beverages (7-14 Hunger)

Smoothies combine a Glass Bottle, fruit, Ice, and Milk for 7 hunger each (Strawberry, Banana, and Fruit Smoothie). The Kale Smoothie is the standout at 14 hunger, using Kale, Mango, Yoghurt, and Tomato. Beer (Hops + Food Press), Wine (Grapes + Food Press), and Mead (Honey Bottle + Water + Food Press) all restore 7 hunger. Rum is a simple shapeless recipe with a Glass Bottle, Molasses, and a Water Bucket.

Salads and Soups (7-10 Hunger)

Salads are crafted in a Bowl with various vegetables and restore 10 hunger. Options include Cucumber Salad, Caesar Salad, Leafy Salad, Fruit Salad, and Veggie Salad. Leek Soup uses a Bowl, Leek, Potato, and Milk for 7 hunger. Oatmeal (Bowl, Oat, Milk) also provides 7 hunger. These are excellent mid-game foods because they use no cooking utensils.

Sandwiches and Main Dishes (10 Hunger)

The sandwich category includes Ham Sandwich, BLT, Peanut Butter and Jam, Tuna Sandwich, Grilled Cheese, Hamburger, Cheeseburger, and Tofu Burger. Most restore 10 hunger. Main dishes like Lemon Chicken, Fried Chicken, Chicken and Rice, Sushi, Egg Roll, and Cashew Chicken also restore 10 hunger. Taco, Burrito, Enchilada, Tostada, Carnitas, Fajitas, and Quesadilla make up a strong Mexican food category.

Pizzas (10-18 Hunger)

Pizza comes in four tiers. Basic Pizza (Dough, Cheese, Tomato, Frying Pan) restores 10 hunger. Cheese Pizza adds extra Cheese for 14 hunger. Supreme Pizza (Dough, Cheese, Tomato, Bell Pepper, Olive, Meat, Frying Pan) and Pineapple Pepperoni Pizza both max out at 18 hunger, making them among the best foods in the mod.

Desserts and Baked Goods (5-18 Hunger)

The dessert category is extensive. Pies (Apple, Cherry, Pecan, Banana Cream) restore 14 hunger. Cakes like Tres Leche Cake reach 18 hunger, the highest in the mod. Ice cream varieties (Vanilla, Strawberry, Mango, Pecan, Rum Raisin) provide 10-14 hunger. Brownies, Cookies, Churros, Doughnuts, Nougat, and Candied Nuts round out the sweets. Jams (Grape, Strawberry, Peach, Apricot, Blackberry, Blueberry, Cherry, Elderberry, Raspberry) restore 3 hunger and can be combined with Toast.

Best Foods for Adventuring

Supreme Pizza (18 hunger, 1.4 saturation) and Tres Leche Cake (18 hunger, 1.4 saturation) are the highest-value foods in Croptopia. For easy bulk production, Salads are hard to beat: they restore 10 hunger, require no cooking utensil, and use common vegetables. Pumpkin Spice Latte (14 hunger) is another strong option if you have Coffee Beans and Pumpkins.

Cinnamon Trees and Special Blocks

Cinnamon is unique among Croptopia's tree crops because it comes with its own wood type. Cinnamon Trees generate in Jungle biomes and feature Cinnamon Logs that can be stripped and crafted into Cinnamon Wood, just like vanilla wood types. The logs have a strength of 2.0, identical to Oak. Cinnamon itself is obtained from the tree and is used in Churros, Horchata, and Snickerdoodle recipes.

Salt Ore is another special block that generates as disk-shaped deposits in and near River biomes with a target of 25 per chunk, similar to Clay disks. It has a hardness of 0.5, making it very quick to mine. Salt is essential for Cheese, Butter, Steamed Rice, French Fries, and many other recipes, so stock up when you find a River.

Mexican Food Collection

Croptopia includes a substantial Mexican food category that deserves special mention. The Tortilla is the foundation, crafted from Flour, a Frying Pan, and a Water Bucket (yields 2). From there, you can make Tacos (Tortilla, Cheese, Lettuce, Salsa, Meat), Burritos (Black Bean, Rice, Tomato, Tortilla), Enchiladas (Meat, Tomato, Cheese, Tortilla), Tostadas (Black Bean, Tomato, Lettuce, Tortilla), Quesadillas (2 Tortillas, Cheese, Avocado, Chicken, Frying Pan), and Chimichangas (Burrito, Flour, Cooking Pot).

Supporting ingredients include Salsa (Tomato, Chile Pepper, Salt, Lime, Tomatillo; yields 4), Crema (Milk Bucket, Lime, Salt; yields 4), Refried Beans (Black Bean, Pepper, Cheese, Frying Pan), Pepperoni (Beef, Porkchop, Paprika, Chile Pepper; yields 4), and Corn Husk (2 Corn; yields 4) for Tamales. Tamales themselves are one of the more complex recipes requiring Chicken, Onion, Corn Husk, Flour, Salt, Pepper, and a Cooking Pot for 14 hunger. Stuffed Poblanos and Chili Relleno round out the category at 14 hunger each.

Configuration

Croptopia's configuration file is located at config/croptopia/options.json. There are two main options and a detailed seed configuration section.

Options

The "use-hoe-to-collect-seeds" option (default: true) controls whether you need to break Grass with a Hoe to get Croptopia seeds. Set it to false if you want seeds to drop when breaking Grass with any tool or by hand. The "disable-salt-ore" option (default: false) prevents Salt Ore from generating in the world if set to true.

Seed Configuration

The "seeds" section lets you configure the biome category and drop chance for every seed type individually. Each seed has a "biome-category" field (acceptable values: taiga, extreme_hills, jungle, mesa, plains, savanna, icy, the_end, beach, forest, ocean, desert, river, swamp, mushroom, nether) and a "drop-chance" float. Set the biome category to "none" if you want a seed to drop from Grass in any biome. The default drop chance is 0.0125 (1.25%) for all seeds.

Hoe Requirement

By default, you must use a Hoe to break Grass to get Croptopia seeds. If you are breaking Grass by hand and getting nothing, this is why. Either equip a Hoe or change "use-hoe-to-collect-seeds" to false in the config.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get Croptopia seeds?

In versions 1.16-1.17, break Tall Grass, Grass, Ferns, or Large Ferns with a Hoe (by default) in the correct biome category for each seed type. The drop rate is 1.25% per seed type. In 1.18+, seeds are no longer obtained from Grass; instead, you find wild crops growing in the world and harvest them directly.

How do I get fruit tree saplings?

Find a fruit tree in the wild, harvest two fruits from it, and combine them with any vanilla Sapling in a Crafting Table. For example, two Peaches plus an Oak Sapling gives a Peach Sapling. You cannot get fruit tree saplings from breaking leaves like vanilla trees.

Do cooking utensils get consumed when crafting?

No. The Cooking Pot, Frying Pan, Food Press, and Mortar and Pestle all have 500 durability. They take one point of damage per crafting use but are returned to you after each craft. You will get hundreds of uses before they break.

Where do I find Salt?

Salt Ore generates as disk-shaped deposits in and near River biomes, similar to Clay. Look along riverbeds and dig into the sand and dirt near water. It is a soft block (0.5 hardness) so it breaks quickly.

Does Croptopia work with JEI or REI?

Yes. JEI (Just Enough Items) and REI (Roughly Enough Items) both display Croptopia's recipes. If you prefer an in-game solution without those mods, install Patchouli and craft the Croptopia Guide Book (3 Croptopia crops + a Book) for a built-in recipe reference.

What is the best food in Croptopia?

Supreme Pizza, Pineapple Pepperoni Pizza, and Tres Leche Cake all restore 18 hunger with 1.4 saturation, making them the highest-tier foods in the mod. For easier alternatives, Tamales, Stuffed Poblanos, Cashew Chicken, Pumpkin Spice Latte, and Kale Smoothie all restore 14 hunger.
