Farmer's Respite Mod Guide: Tea, Coffee & Kettle Brewing

Farmer's Respite is an addon for Farmer's Delight that introduces a complete tea and coffee brewing system to Minecraft. The mod adds the Kettle as its central crafting station, two new plantable crops (Tea and Coffee), over 20 brewable beverages with unique potion effects, several new food items, and even Nether-based plants that spread dangerous Wither Roots.

Overview

Farmer's Respite expands Farmer's Delight with a full tea and coffee brewing system. The centerpiece is the Kettle, a new crafting station that brews hot beverages using water, heat, and ingredients you grow yourself. The mod adds Tea Bushes that produce three types of tea leaves depending on their growth stage, Coffee Bushes that grow in the Nether, and a custom Caffeinated status effect that boosts your attack speed and movement while preventing sleep.

Beyond beverages, the mod includes several cooked meals for Farmer's Delight's Cooking Pot, placeable cakes, and the dangerous Wither Roots plant that spreads near Coffee Bushes in the Nether. You can browse every item the mod adds using the Items tab above, and check the Recipes tab for the complete recipe list.

Requires Farmer's Delight

Farmer's Respite is an addon mod and requires Farmer's Delight to be installed. You'll need access to a Cooking Pot from Farmer's Delight for some of the meal recipes, and several effects like Comfort and Nourishment come from the base mod.

Getting Started

  1. 1

    Craft a Kettle

The Kettle is your primary brewing station. Craft one using 5 Copper Ingots, a Bucket, 2 Sticks, and a piece of Leather. Place it on a block with a heat source underneath, such as a lit Campfire, Soul Campfire, or Magma Block.

  2. 2

    Find or Plant Tea Bushes

Wild Tea Bushes generate naturally in the Overworld. Break them with Shears to get Tea Seeds, then plant the seeds on any solid block with space above. The bush grows from a small seedling into a tall double-height plant over time.

  3. 3

    Harvest Tea Leaves with Shears

Right-click a mature Tea Bush with Shears to harvest it. The type of tea leaves you get depends on the bush's age: age 0 yields Green Tea Leaves, age 1 yields Yellow Tea Leaves, age 2 yields a mix of Yellow and Black Tea Leaves, and age 3 yields Black Tea Leaves. Harvesting also drops Sticks and resets the bush to a small seedling.

  4. 4

    Fill and Heat the Kettle

Right-click the Kettle with a Water Bucket (fills 3 levels) or a Water Bottle (fills 1 level). Each brewing recipe consumes 1 water level. Make sure there is a heat source block directly below the Kettle, such as a Campfire.

  5. 5

    Brew Your First Tea

Open the Kettle and place 2 Green Tea Leaves in the input slots. The Kettle will brew for 2 minutes (2400 ticks), then produce Green Tea. Right-click the Kettle with a Glass Bottle to collect your finished drink. Green Tea grants Haste I for 3 minutes, making it a great early-game productivity boost.

The Kettle

The Kettle is the core block of Farmer's Respite. It functions similarly to Farmer's Delight's Cooking Pot but is designed specifically for brewing beverages. The Kettle has two input slots for ingredients, a container slot, and an output slot. It requires both water and a heat source to operate.

Water Management

The Kettle holds up to 3 water levels. A Water Bucket fills it completely to 3, while a Water Bottle adds just 1 level. Each recipe that requires water consumes 1 level when brewing completes. You can check the current water level visually or through the GUI. Some special recipes don't require water at all.

Heat Sources and Brewing

The Kettle must sit on top of a valid heat source to brew. Any block tagged as a tray heat source in Farmer's Delight works, including Campfires, Soul Campfires, and Magma Blocks. Brewing takes 2 minutes (2400 ticks) by default. While brewing, the Kettle emits smoke particles from the front. When the brew finishes, it produces a whistle sound if the lid is closed.

Using the Lid

You can toggle the Kettle's lid by shift-right-clicking with an empty hand. The lid is purely cosmetic and affects the whistling sound and particle effects.

Efficient Water Usage

Always fill the Kettle with a Water Bucket instead of individual bottles. A bucket fills 3 levels at once, letting you brew 3 batches before needing a refill. Keep a water source nearby with an infinite water pool for quick bucket refills.

Tea Bushes and Tea Leaves

Tea Bushes are the mod's primary Overworld crop. They spawn naturally as Wild Tea Bushes in the world, and you can obtain Tea Seeds by breaking them. Plant the seeds on any solid block with adequate space above. The bush starts as a small single-block seedling, then grows into a tall double-height plant.

What makes Tea Bushes unique is their age-based harvest system. The bush has 4 growth stages (age 0 through 3), and the type of tea leaves you get when harvesting with Shears depends on which stage you pick at. At age 0, you get 2-3 Green Tea Leaves. At age 1, you get 2-3 Yellow Tea Leaves. At age 2, you get a mix of 1-2 Yellow Tea Leaves and 1-2 Black Tea Leaves. At age 3, you get 2-3 Black Tea Leaves. Harvesting always resets the bush back to a small seedling.

This means timing your harvest is strategically important. If you need Green Tea Leaves, harvest early. If you want Black Tea Leaves, let the bush fully mature. The random tick rate determines growth speed, with roughly a 1-in-15 chance per random tick to advance one age stage.

Beverages and Their Effects

Farmer's Respite adds over 20 brewable drinks, each with unique status effects. Every base beverage has two enhanced variants: a Long version (brewed with Milk) that extends the duration, and a Strong version (brewed with a Honey Bottle) that increases the potency. Understanding these variants is key to getting the most out of your brews.

Green Tea

Brewed from 2 Green Tea Leaves, Green Tea grants Haste I for 3 minutes (3600 ticks). This is excellent for mining sessions. Long Green Tea extends the duration to 4 minutes 30 seconds with Haste I, while Strong Green Tea provides Haste II for 1 minute 30 seconds, which is better for short intensive mining bursts.

Yellow Tea

Brewed from 2 Yellow Tea Leaves, Yellow Tea grants Speed I for 3 minutes (3600 ticks). Great for exploration and travel. Long Yellow Tea gives Speed I for 4 minutes 30 seconds, while Strong Yellow Tea provides Speed II for 1 minute 30 seconds.

Black Tea

Brewed from 2 Black Tea Leaves, Black Tea grants both Jump Boost I for 10 seconds and Caffeinated I for 10 seconds. The Long variant extends both effects to 15 seconds, while the Strong variant bumps both to level II for 5 seconds. Black Tea is best used as a quick buff before combat or traversal.

Coffee

Brewed from 2 Coffee Beans, Coffee is the most potent source of the Caffeinated effect. Base Coffee grants Caffeinated II for 5 minutes (6000 ticks). Long Coffee provides Caffeinated I for a massive 10 minutes (12000 ticks). Strong Coffee delivers Caffeinated III for 2 minutes 30 seconds (3000 ticks), the highest tier available.

Other Beverages

Rose Hip Tea is brewed from 2 Rose Hips and directly heals 1 heart (2.0 HP) on consumption. The Strong variant heals 2 hearts (4.0 HP). Dandelion Tea uses a Dandelion and Tea Leaves (generic) to grant the Comfort effect from Farmer's Delight for 3 minutes. Apple Cider is brewed from an Apple and Sugar, with its Long variant providing Resistance I for 1 minute 30 seconds. Hot Cocoa is brewed from Cocoa Beans and Sugar. Melon Juice uses a Melon Slice and Sugar, and its Strong variant heals 2 hearts.

Purulent Tea is a special Nether-themed brew made from Nether Wart and a Fermented Spider Eye. Rather than granting a traditional buff, it extends the duration of one random curable effect already on you by 15 seconds (300 ticks), at the cost of inflicting Nausea for 30 seconds. Strong Purulent Tea extends by 30 seconds but gives Nausea II. This is a high-risk, high-reward drink for extending valuable buffs during long adventures.

The Caffeinated Effect

Caffeinated is the mod's signature status effect, and it is surprisingly powerful. At its base level (Caffeinated I), it provides a 1% movement speed increase and a 50% attack speed increase. These bonuses scale with the amplifier, making higher tiers even more effective in combat.

Caffeinated also has two unique side effects. First, it prevents sleep by reducing your sleep exhaustion timer by 24,000 ticks per amplifier level every tick. This means you literally cannot sleep in a Bed while Caffeinated, which is a realistic touch. Second, it grants immunity to the Slowness effect. If you already have Slowness when Caffeinated is applied, the Slowness is instantly removed. Any new Slowness attempts are blocked entirely while Caffeinated is active.

Can't Sleep While Caffeinated

The Caffeinated effect prevents you from sleeping in a Bed. If you drink Coffee or Black Tea before nightfall, you'll need to wait for the effect to wear off before you can skip the night. Long Coffee lasts 10 full minutes, so plan accordingly. Drinking Milk will clear the effect if you need to sleep urgently.

Coffee Bushes and the Nether

Coffee Bushes are the mod's Nether crop, growing on Soul Sand, Soul Soil, Crimson Nylium, and Warped Nylium. They generate naturally in the Nether and can also be planted from Coffee Beans. Unlike Tea Bushes, Coffee plants have a complex multi-stage growth system with several block types.

A Coffee Bush starts as a two-block-tall plant. As it grows (via bone meal if enabled, or naturally through random ticks), it develops a stem and eventually becomes a tall three or four-block structure with a Coffee Stem at the base, a middle section, and a bush top. The stems produce Coffee Berries when they reach age 2. Right-click a ripe stem to harvest 1 Coffee Berry without breaking the plant, similar to Sweet Berries.

Coffee Berries vs Coffee Beans

Coffee Berries are the raw harvest from mature stems. They are edible, restoring 1 hunger point with an 80% chance of Wither I for 5 seconds and guaranteed Caffeinated I for 10 seconds. Coffee Beans are a separate item used for planting new bushes and as the primary brewing ingredient for Coffee in the Kettle.

Wither Roots

Coffee Bushes in the Nether have a dangerous side effect: they can spread Wither Roots to nearby crop blocks. When a Coffee Bush ticks, it checks nearby blocks and can replace crops with Wither Roots. These thorny plants slow entities that walk through them, deal 1 damage on contact, and inflict Wither I for 5 seconds. When Wither Roots are broken or their support block is removed, they release an Area Effect Cloud that applies Wither to anything nearby. This makes Coffee farming in the Nether a hazardous activity that requires care to prevent the roots from overtaking your other crops.

Food Items and Meals

Beyond beverages, Farmer's Respite adds several solid food items that integrate with Farmer's Delight's cooking system.

Baked Goods

Green Tea Cookies are a simple snack crafted with 2 Wheat and a Green Tea Leaf, yielding 8 cookies. They restore 1 hunger point and grant Haste I for 5 seconds. Coffee Cake is crafted from Wheat, Eggs, Sugar, Milk, and Coffee Beans, producing a placeable cake block. Each of the 7 slices restores 1.5 hunger points and grants Caffeinated I for 30 seconds. You can cut slices with a Knife from Farmer's Delight. Rose Hip Pie is crafted from Rose Hips, Sugar, Milk, Honey Bottles, and a Pie Crust. Each slice restores 1.5 hunger points and grants Regeneration I for 15 seconds.

Cooking Pot Meals

Three meals are cooked in Farmer's Delight's Cooking Pot. Tea Curry uses Yellow Tea Leaves, Raw Chicken, Cabbage, Onion, and Rice, restoring 5 hunger points with Speed I for 30 seconds. Blazing Chili combines Blaze Powder, Nether Wart, Coffee Beans, and Raw Beef, restoring 5 hunger points with Fire Resistance for 1 minute. Black Cod uses Cooked Cod, Black Tea Leaves, Bowl, Cabbage, and Rice, restoring 5 hunger points with both Nourishment for 3 minutes and Caffeinated I for 30 seconds, making it one of the best all-around meals in the mod.

Nether Wart Sourdough

This bread variant is crafted from Nether Wart, Red Mushroom, and Brown Mushroom. It restores 2 hunger points but has an 80% chance to inflict Nausea for 10 seconds. It is primarily a survival food for the Nether when better options are not available.

Configuration Options

Farmer's Respite has four configuration options found in the common config file. Two control bone meal behavior: "enableBoneMealTeaBush" and "enableBoneMealCoffeeBush" are both set to false by default, meaning neither crop responds to Bone Meal out of the box. Enable these if you want faster farming.

The other two options control world generation frequency. "teaBushChance" (default 10, range 0-20) controls how often Wild Tea Bushes spawn in the Overworld. "coffeeBushChance" (default 10, range 0-20) controls Coffee Bush generation in the Nether. Higher values mean more frequent spawns. Setting either to 0 disables natural generation for that crop entirely.

Frequently Asked Questions

What heat sources work for the Kettle?

The Kettle uses the same heat source tag as Farmer's Delight's Cooking Pot. Campfires, Soul Campfires, and Magma Blocks all work. Place the Kettle directly on top of the heat source block. Any block tagged as a "tray heat source" in Farmer's Delight is compatible.

How do I get different tea leaf types?

The type of tea leaves depends on when you harvest. Use Shears on a Tea Bush at age 0 for Green Tea Leaves, age 1 for Yellow Tea Leaves, age 2 for a mix of Yellow and Black, and age 3 for Black Tea Leaves. You must use Shears to harvest; breaking the bush without Shears does not yield leaves.

What is the difference between Long and Strong tea variants?

Long variants are brewed by combining a base tea with Milk in the Kettle. They have the same effect level but a longer duration. Strong variants are brewed by combining a base tea with a Honey Bottle. They have a higher effect level but a shorter duration. Choose Long for sustained buffs and Strong for intense short bursts.

Why can't I sleep after drinking Coffee?

The Caffeinated effect prevents sleeping by constantly reducing your sleep exhaustion timer. You need to wait for the effect to expire or drink Milk to remove it. Long Coffee lasts 10 minutes, so be careful about drinking it close to nighttime.

Can I bone meal Tea Bushes or Coffee Bushes?

Not by default. Both bone meal options are disabled in the config. You can enable them by setting "enableBoneMealTeaBush" and "enableBoneMealCoffeeBush" to true in the Farmer's Respite common config file.

What does Purulent Tea actually do?

Purulent Tea picks one random curable status effect currently on you and extends its duration by 15 seconds (or 30 seconds for the Strong variant). It also inflicts Nausea as a side effect. This is useful for extending valuable buffs like Strength or Resistance potions during boss fights, but only works if you already have an active curable effect.
