Gravitational Modulating Additional Unit Guide: Enhanced MekaSuit Flight Controls

The Gravitational Modulating Additional Unit (GMAU) is a Mekanism addon that supercharges the MekaSuit's Gravitational Modulating Unit with five quality-of-life upgrades. It adds persistent flight without double-tapping Space, instant mid-air stopping, FOV correction, adjustable vertical speed, and the ability to mute that constant flying sound.

Overview

The Gravitational Modulating Additional Unit (GMAU) is a small but impactful addon for Mekanism that addresses the most common frustrations with the MekaSuit's built-in Gravitational Modulating Unit. If you've ever been annoyed by having to double-tap Space every time you land, or found it impossible to hover precisely over a specific block while flying, this module solves those problems. It installs alongside the original Gravitational Modulating Unit in your MekaSuit and provides five toggleable features that dramatically improve the flight experience.

The mod adds a single item, the Module Gravitational Modulating Additional Unit, which functions as a Mekanism module. Once installed in a MekaSuit Helmet, Chestplate, Leggings, or Boots, it provides configurable options for persistent flight, instant stopping, FOV correction, vertical speed adjustment, and sound muting. You can browse the crafting recipe in the Recipes tab above.

Prerequisites

This mod is an addon for Mekanism and requires it as a dependency. Before you can use GMAU, you need to have progressed far enough in Mekanism to craft and install the original Gravitational Modulating Unit on your MekaSuit. That means you'll need a fully operational MekaSuit (at minimum one armor piece), access to Reinforced Alloy, Ultimate Control Circuits, Polonium Pellets, and a Module Base. If you're not yet producing Polonium through a Fission Reactor and SPS setup, you're not ready for this module yet.

Late-Game Mekanism Content

The GMAU module requires Polonium Pellets and Ultimate Control Circuits, placing it firmly in the late-game Mekanism progression. You'll need a working Fission Reactor, Supercritical Phase Shifter (SPS), and advanced circuit infrastructure before you can craft this module.

Getting Started

  1. 1

    Ensure Mekanism Flight is Working

Before installing the GMAU module, confirm that you already have a MekaSuit with the standard Gravitational Modulating Unit installed and functional. You should be able to fly by double-tapping Space. If flight isn't working yet, you need to address your base Mekanism setup first.

  2. 2

    Gather the Crafting Materials

You'll need 4 Reinforced Alloy, 1 Ultimate Control Circuit, 1 Module Base, and 3 Polonium Pellets. The Reinforced Alloy and Ultimate Control Circuit come from Mekanism's standard alloy and circuit progression. The Module Base is crafted from Mekanism materials. Polonium Pellets require a Fission Reactor producing Polonium waste, processed through a Chemical Crystallizer.

  3. 3

    Craft the Module

Craft the Module Gravitational Modulating Additional Unit at a regular Crafting Table. The recipe requires 4 Reinforced Alloy on the sides, 1 Ultimate Control Circuit at top-center, 1 Module Base at center, and 3 Polonium Pellets along the bottom row. This recipe unlocks once you've already crafted the original Gravitational Modulating Unit.

  4. 4

Install the Module in Your MekaSuit

Open your MekaSuit's module interface (the Modification Station) and install the GMAU module into any armor piece that already has the Gravitational Modulating Unit. The module has a max stack size of 1 and Rare rarity. Once installed, all five features become available as toggleable config options in the module settings.

  5. 5

    Configure Your Preferred Settings

Open the module configuration screen to toggle each feature. By default, Stop Immediately is enabled and all other features are disabled. Most players will want to enable Defy Gravity Always first, as it's the primary quality-of-life improvement. Then adjust the other settings to taste.

Module Features

The GMAU module provides five independently toggleable features. Each one addresses a specific annoyance with vanilla MekaSuit flight. All settings can be changed at any time through the module's configuration interface without removing the module from your armor.

Defy Gravity Always

This is the headline feature for most players. When enabled, your MekaSuit flight stays active even after you land on the ground. Normally, the Gravitational Modulating Unit deactivates when you touch a surface, forcing you to double-tap Space again to resume flying. With Defy Gravity Always turned on, your flight mode persists automatically. The only way to deactivate flight is by sneaking while on the ground, giving you full control over when you stop flying. This feature is disabled by default.

Stop Immediately

When you release the movement keys (W, A, S, D) while flying, your character normally drifts forward due to momentum. Stop Immediately eliminates this drift entirely, zeroing out your horizontal velocity the moment you release the keys. Your vertical movement is unaffected, so you can still ascend and descend normally. This makes precise positioning in the air much easier, whether you're building or hovering over a specific spot. This feature is enabled by default.

Fix FOV

Minecraft dynamically adjusts your field of view during certain actions like sprinting, drawing a Bow, or using speed effects. This can be disorienting while flying at high speeds with the MekaSuit. Fix FOV locks your field of view modifier to 1.0 (your default FOV setting), preventing any action-based FOV changes. This is disabled by default.

Vertical Speed Modifier

This feature lets you adjust how fast you ascend and descend while flying. There are five speed tiers: Off (1.0x, the default Mekanism speed), Low (1.5x), Medium (2.0x), High (2.5x), and Ultra (3.0x). You can cycle through these tiers using the Mekanism module mode key (Scroll Wheel by default) or by binding a dedicated key in the controls menu. The speed multiplier applies to your vertical movement when pressing the jump or sneak keys during flight. Sneaking while pressing the key cycles the speed in reverse.

Mute Modulating Sound

The standard Gravitational Modulating Unit plays a persistent humming sound while flight is active. For players who use Defy Gravity Always and are flying constantly, this sound can become grating. Mute Modulating Sound silences the flight sound entirely via a mixin that intercepts the sound playback check. This is especially useful when combined with Defy Gravity Always, since you'd otherwise hear the hum nonstop. This feature is disabled by default.

Recommended Starting Configuration

Enable Defy Gravity Always and Mute Modulating Sound together for the best experience. Then set your Vertical Speed to Medium (2.0x) for a good balance between speed and control. Keep Stop Immediately enabled (it's on by default) and try Fix FOV to see if you prefer the stable view while flying.

Vertical Speed Tiers

Off (Default)1.0x speed
Low1.5x speed
Medium2.0x speed
High2.5x speed
Ultra3.0x speed

Default Settings and Key Bindings

Out of the box, only Stop Immediately is enabled. All other features (Defy Gravity Always, Fix FOV, Vertical Speed, and Mute Modulating Sound) start disabled. The Vertical Speed defaults to the Off tier (1.0x multiplier), meaning vertical movement matches the base Mekanism behavior until you change it.

The mod adds one key binding for switching Vertical Speed tiers. By default, this key is unbound (key code -1), so you'll need to assign it manually in the Controls menu under the GMAU category. You can also use the standard Mekanism module mode scroll (Scroll Wheel) to cycle through speed tiers when the module is selected.

Key Binding Required

The Vertical Speed switch key is not bound by default. If you want to quickly cycle through speed tiers without using the module scroll wheel, go to Options > Controls > Key Binds and look for the GMAU category to assign a key.

How It Works Under the Hood

Understanding how GMAU works can help you troubleshoot issues. The module hooks into both server-side and client-side tick events. The Defy Gravity Always feature runs on the server tick, checking if the player has gravitational modulation ready and, if so, forcing flight mode to stay active. It only deactivates when the player is sneaking on the ground, giving you explicit control.

Stop Immediately works on the client side by zeroing out horizontal velocity (the X and Z components of your movement vector) when no movement keys are pressed during flight. It preserves the Y component, so ascending and descending aren't affected. Fix FOV uses a Forge event handler that intercepts FOV computation and resets the modifier to 1.0 whenever the module is enabled.

The Mute Modulating Sound feature uses a Mixin that intercepts the shouldPlaySound method on Mekanism's GravitationalModulationSound class. When the mute option is enabled, the method returns false, preventing the sound from ever playing. This is a clean approach that doesn't affect other mod sounds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this mod work without Mekanism installed?

No. GMAU is a Mekanism addon and has a hard dependency on Mekanism. It extends the MekaSuit's Gravitational Modulating Unit functionality, so you need Mekanism installed and a working MekaSuit with the base flight module.

Which armor piece should I install the module on?

The module scans all equipped armor pieces to find an enabled GMAU module. It works on any MekaSuit armor piece (Helmet, Chestplate, Leggings, or Boots). Install it on whichever piece has a free module slot. The module checks all armor slots each tick, so placement doesn't affect functionality.

Why doesn't Defy Gravity Always keep me flying?

Make sure the base Gravitational Modulating Unit from Mekanism is also installed and enabled. GMAU checks if gravitational modulation is "ready" before activating its features. Also verify that the Defy Gravity Always toggle is turned on in the module configuration, as it's disabled by default.

Can I change the Vertical Speed while flying?

Yes. You can cycle through the five speed tiers (Off, Low, Medium, High, Ultra) at any time using the dedicated key bind or the Mekanism module mode scroll wheel. The change takes effect immediately. Sneaking while pressing the speed switch key cycles in reverse.

Does Stop Immediately affect vertical movement?

No. Stop Immediately only zeroes out horizontal movement (X and Z velocity). Your vertical movement continues normally, so ascending and descending with jump/sneak are unaffected. This is intentional so you maintain full vertical control while getting precise horizontal positioning.

Is this mod compatible with other Mekanism addons?

GMAU operates independently from other Mekanism addon modules. It only interacts with the base Gravitational Modulating Unit functionality and shouldn't conflict with other MekaSuit modules or Mekanism addons like Mekanism Generators or Mekanism Additions.
