Macaw's Trapdoors

Adds about 60 Trapdoors! With vanila and unique styles.

Macaw's Trapdoors Guide: Every Style, Print & Recipe Explained

Macaw's Trapdoors adds over 80 new trapdoor designs to Minecraft across 10 unique styles and 8 wood types, plus two Metal variants. The mod uses a clever Print crafting system that lets you create decorative patterns and apply them to any wood type, making it easy to match trapdoors to any build style.

Overview

Macaw's Trapdoors expands Minecraft's trapdoor selection from a handful of vanilla options to over 80 unique designs. The mod covers all eight wood types (Oak, Spruce, Birch, Jungle, Acacia, Dark Oak, Crimson, and Warped) with 10 distinct styles each, plus two Iron-based Metal Trapdoors. Every trapdoor functions identically to vanilla ones, meaning they can be opened by hand or with Redstone, placed on any face of a block, and used in all the same ways you're already familiar with.

The key innovation is the Print system. Rather than memorizing dozens of unique recipes, you craft reusable Print items that act as patterns. Combine a Print with any type of Planks on a Crafting Table, and you get the corresponding styled trapdoor in that wood. You can browse every recipe and item on the tabs above this guide.

Getting Started

  1. 1

    Craft Your First Print

Prints are the crafting patterns that unlock every trapdoor style. To make one, you need 4 Paper and 1 vanilla Trapdoor. Each vanilla Trapdoor type produces a different Print. For example, placing 4 Paper around an Oak Trapdoor gives you 4 Print Classic items. Start with whichever vanilla Trapdoor you have on hand.

  2. 2

    Combine a Print with Planks

Place your Print in the center of the Crafting Table with a Plank on each side. The Plank type determines the wood appearance, and the Print determines the style. For instance, Spruce Planks + Print Classic = Spruce Classic Trapdoor. One Print is consumed per trapdoor crafted.

  3. 3

Try the Glass and Bark Variants

Two styles don't require Prints at all. Glass Trapdoors are crafted with Planks and Glass Panes in a 2x3 grid (yielding 2 trapdoors). Bark Trapdoors use Logs instead of Planks with Glass Panes in the same pattern. These are great early options if you haven't gathered Paper yet.

  4. 4

    Unlock Barn Trapdoors

Barn Trapdoors are unique because they're crafted from a Glass Trapdoor rather than a Print. Place one Plank above a Glass Trapdoor of the same wood type to get a Barn Trapdoor. This means Glass Trapdoors serve double duty as both a finished product and a crafting ingredient.

  5. 5

    Experiment with Metal Trapdoors

If you want a non-wood option, craft Metal Trapdoors using Iron Ingots and Glass Panes in the same 2x3 pattern as Glass Trapdoors. You can then combine a Metal Trapdoor with an Iron Ingot to create the solid Metal Full Trapdoor variant.

The Print System

Prints are the core mechanic of Macaw's Trapdoors. There are 8 Prints in total, each linked to a specific vanilla Trapdoor type. Every Print recipe produces 4 Prints from just 4 Paper and 1 vanilla Trapdoor, making them very resource-efficient. Once you have a Print, you can apply it to any of the 8 wood types to create that style of trapdoor.

Here's which vanilla Trapdoor creates which Print:

Each Print recipe yields 4 items but only consumes 1 vanilla Trapdoor. Since vanilla Trapdoors are cheap (6 Planks for 2), you can stock up on Prints very efficiently. A single stack of Paper and 16 vanilla Trapdoors will give you 64 Prints, enough for 64 styled trapdoors.

Trapdoor Styles

Each wood type gets 10 trapdoor variants. Eight of these are Print-based styles, and two (Glass and Bark) are crafted directly without Prints. All wooden trapdoors share the same block properties: 3.0 hardness, Wood sound type, and non-solid collision (you can walk through them when open). Here's what each style looks like and when you might want to use it.

Classic

A clean, traditional plank design. This is the most versatile style and pairs well with nearly any build. If you want something that looks like an upgraded vanilla Trapdoor without being too decorative, Classic is your go-to.

Cottage

Features a cozy cross-brace pattern that works beautifully in rustic and medieval builds. The Cottage style adds a handcrafted, country look that complements Spruce and Dark Oak builds especially well.

Barn

A solid wood frame with a glass center panel. Barn Trapdoors are crafted by combining Planks with a Glass Trapdoor of the same wood type rather than using a Print. They're ideal for stable doors, farmhouses, and rustic builds where you want partial visibility.

Glass

A wood-framed trapdoor with prominent Glass Pane inserts. Crafted directly with Planks and Glass Panes (no Print needed), the recipe yields 2 per craft. Glass Trapdoors are perfect for modern builds, greenhouses, or anywhere you want light to pass through while maintaining a door.

Bark

Uses Logs instead of Planks for a raw, unprocessed wood appearance with Glass Pane inserts. Like Glass Trapdoors, these are crafted directly without Prints and yield 2 per craft. The bark texture makes them ideal for treehouses, natural builds, and woodland cabins.

Paper

A delicate lattice design inspired by Japanese shoji screens. The Paper style is perfect for Eastern-themed builds, tea houses, and zen gardens. It pairs particularly well with Birch wood for a light, airy aesthetic.

Beach & Tropical

Two warm-weather styles with open, breezy designs. Beach has a horizontal slat pattern like louvered shutters, while Tropical features a more decorative bamboo-inspired look. Both work well for coastal builds, tiki bars, and island houses, especially in Jungle and Acacia wood.

Four Panel, Barred & Mystic

Four Panel divides the trapdoor into a clean grid, ideal for refined builds and townhouses. Barred features vertical bars similar to prison or dungeon doors, great for medieval or industrial builds. Mystic has an ornate, swirling pattern that suits magical or fantasy-themed structures. These three styles round out the collection with options for nearly every building theme.

Metal Trapdoors

Beyond the wooden varieties, the mod adds two Iron-based trapdoors. The Metal Trapdoor is crafted with Iron Ingots and Glass Panes in the same 2x3 grid pattern as wooden Glass Trapdoors, yielding 2 per craft. It has different block properties from the wooden variants: 1.0 base hardness with 3.0 blast resistance, and uses the Metal sound type instead of Wood.

The Metal Full Trapdoor is the solid variant, crafted by placing an Iron Ingot above a Metal Trapdoor. This gives you a completely opaque iron trapdoor without the glass center. Both Metal variants require Redstone to open (they cannot be opened by hand), just like vanilla Iron Doors and Iron Trapdoors.

Redstone Required

Metal Trapdoors behave like vanilla Iron Trapdoors. They cannot be opened by right-clicking. You'll need a Button, Lever, Pressure Plate, or Redstone signal to operate them. This makes them ideal for secure entrances and Redstone-controlled mechanisms.

Wood Type Availability

All 10 trapdoor styles are available in all 8 wood types. The Overworld wood types (Oak, Spruce, Birch, Jungle, Acacia, and Dark Oak) use their respective Planks and Logs for crafting. The Nether wood types (Crimson and Warped) work the same way but use Stems instead of Logs for Bark Trapdoor recipes. This gives you full design coverage whether you're building in the Overworld or the Nether.

Since each wood type has its own distinct color and grain texture, the same style can look dramatically different depending on the wood. A Mystic Trapdoor in pale Birch has a completely different feel than one in dark Crimson. Experiment with mixing wood types within a single build for added visual depth.

Building with Trapdoors

All Macaw's Trapdoors work with Redstone, can be waterlogged, and have directional placement just like vanilla Trapdoors. This means you can use them in all the same building tricks: cabinet doors, shelving details, window shutters, floor hatches, and ceiling vents. The wider variety of styles just gives you more options to match your build's aesthetic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do these trapdoors work with Redstone?

Yes. All Macaw's Trapdoors function identically to vanilla Trapdoors. Wooden variants can be opened by right-clicking or with Redstone. Metal variants require Redstone only, just like vanilla Iron Trapdoors.

What are Prints and why do I need them?

Prints are pattern items that determine the style of the trapdoor you craft. There are 8 Prints total, each made from 4 Paper and a specific vanilla Trapdoor. You combine a Print with Planks of your choice to get a styled trapdoor. Glass, Bark, and Barn trapdoors don't use Prints.

Can I use Crimson and Warped wood?

Absolutely. Both Nether wood types are fully supported with all 10 trapdoor styles. Bark Trapdoor recipes use Crimson Stems or Warped Stems in place of Logs. Like their vanilla counterparts, Crimson and Warped trapdoors are not flammable.

How many trapdoors does this mod add in total?

The mod adds 82 new trapdoor blocks: 10 styles across 8 wood types (80 wooden trapdoors) plus the Metal Trapdoor and Metal Full Trapdoor. There are also 8 Print items used as crafting patterns, bringing the total new items to 90.

Is Macaw's Trapdoors compatible with other Macaw's mods?

Yes. Macaw's Trapdoors is fully compatible with all other Macaw's mods (Doors, Fences, Bridges, Roofs, Windows, Furniture, etc.). They're designed by the same author to work together and share a consistent visual style across wood types.

Can mobs open these trapdoors?

The mod's trapdoors follow vanilla behavior. Regular mobs cannot open trapdoors. However, players and Redstone can open the wooden variants. If you want mob-proof trapdoors, use the Metal Trapdoor or Metal Full Trapdoor since they can only be opened with Redstone.
