Mutant Monsters

Mutant creatures and beasts to face off against. Will you triumph, or will you perish?

Mutant Monsters Mod Guide: Mutant Mobs, Unique Weapons & Chemical X

Mutant Monsters transforms five familiar Minecraft mobs into towering, terrifying boss-tier encounters. Each mutant drops unique weapons and items you can't get anywhere else, from the teleporting Endersoul Hand to the ground-shattering Hulk Hammer. Brew the Chemical X potion to create your own mutants on demand, tame a Creeper Minion as a shoulder-riding explosive companion, or saddle up a wall-climbing Spider Pig.

Overview

Mutant Monsters adds five massively upgraded versions of vanilla mobs: the Mutant Creeper, Mutant Enderman, Mutant Skeleton, Mutant Zombie, and Mutant Snow Golem. Each one towers over its vanilla counterpart, boasts hundreds of hit points, and uses devastating multi-phase attack patterns. Defeating them rewards you with powerful unique items and crafting materials you can't obtain any other way.

Beyond the hostile mutants, the mod also introduces two tameable creatures: the Creeper Minion, a tiny explosive companion that rides on your shoulder, and the Spider Pig, a rideable hybrid that climbs walls and traps enemies in Cobwebs. You can browse every item and recipe the mod adds using the tabs at the top of this page.

Getting Started

  1. 1

    Gear Up Before You Explore

Mutants spawn naturally in the same biomes as their vanilla counterparts at about 5% of the normal spawn rate. You'll need at least full Iron Armor and an Iron Sword before you have any chance of surviving an encounter. Diamond gear is strongly recommended for your first fight.

  2. 2

    Fight Your First Mutant Zombie

The Mutant Zombie is the most approachable first mutant fight. It has 150 HP and hits for 12 attack damage, but its attacks are telegraphed and you can dodge the seismic wave slam. Be warned: it has 3 extra lives and will resurrect after you "kill" it, each time recovering 25% of its max health. Bring plenty of food and a Shield.

  3. 3

    Collect Your First Unique Drop

Each mutant drops exclusive items. The Mutant Zombie drops the Hulk Hammer, the Mutant Skeleton drops bone parts for crafting armor, and the Mutant Enderman drops the Endersoul Hand. These items are your primary reason to hunt mutants, as they offer abilities no vanilla item can match.

  4. 4

    Brew Chemical X

Once you have any mutant drop (Endersoul Hand, Hulk Hammer, Creeper Shard, or Mutant Skeleton Skull), combine it with a Thick Potion in a Brewing Stand to create Chemical X. Splash this potion on a vanilla mob to transform it into its mutant variant on demand. This lets you farm mutants in a controlled environment.

  5. 5

    Tame a Creeper Minion

Kill a Mutant Creeper while a player dealt the final blow to get a Creeper Minion Egg. Once it hatches, craft a Creeper Minion Tracker and sneak-interact with the wild Creeper Minion to tame it. Your new companion will follow you, fight your enemies, and even ride on your shoulder.

The Mutant Mobs

All mutant hostile mobs spawn naturally wherever their vanilla counterparts would appear. The spawn weight defaults to 5% of the vanilla mob's weight, which is configurable from 0% to 2000% in the mod's common config. Mutants have full knockback resistance, take no fall damage, and cannot be pushed by other entities.

Mutant Zombie

The Mutant Zombie is a hulking undead brute with 150 HP, 12 attack damage, full knockback resistance, and a 35-block follow range. Its signature mechanic is its 3 extra lives: each time you deplete its health, it collapses and resurrects after a brief animation, recovering 25% of its max HP (37.5 health). You must kill it a total of 4 times to defeat it permanently.

The Mutant Zombie uses three special attacks. Its Ground Slam sends seismic waves in a line in front of it, dealing 9 to 12 damage on the first wave hit and 6 to 8 on subsequent hits, bypassing potion effects like Resistance. The Throw Attack launches its target high into the air, then leaps after them to slam them back down for 12 damage while disabling your Shield for 150 ticks. Its Roar Attack deals 2 to 3 piercing damage to everything in a 14-block radius, knocks targets back, and summons regular Zombies from the ground nearby.

Like the Mutant Skeleton, the Mutant Zombie regenerates 2 HP every 100 ticks during nighttime. It targets Players, Iron Golems, and Villagers, and will convert Villagers to Zombie Villagers on kill (guaranteed on Hard difficulty, 50% on Normal). It drops the Hulk Hammer.

Mutant Skeleton

The Mutant Skeleton stands at 3.6 blocks tall with 150 HP, 3 base attack damage, 0.75 knockback resistance, and an impressive 48-block follow range. While its base damage seems low, its special attacks more than make up for it. Its Melee Attack hits everything in a 4-block radius in front of it for 3 to 4 damage with massive knockback. The Constrict Ribs attack deals base damage plus 6 (total 9) and disables your Shield for 100 ticks.

At range, the Mutant Skeleton is even more dangerous. Its single Shoot attack fires one powerful arrow that can inflict Poison (4 seconds), Slowness II (6 seconds), and Weakness II (6 seconds), each with a 25% chance. The Multi-Shot attack fires 24 arrows in rapid bursts of 6, each from a slightly different angle, making it very difficult to dodge. The Mutant Skeleton regenerates 2 HP every 100 ticks at night and is undead-type, making it vulnerable to Smite.

On death, the Mutant Skeleton deals 7 armor-bypassing damage to all entities within a 3-block radius and explodes into 18 body parts that scatter across the ground. These body parts are the crafting materials for Mutant Skeleton Armor, dropping from their own loot tables (skull, limbs, ribs, pelvis, shoulder pads, arms).

Death Burst

When the Mutant Skeleton dies, it deals 7 armor-bypassing damage to everything within 3 blocks. Back away after landing the killing blow to avoid taking unnecessary damage, especially on lower health.

Mutant Enderman

The Mutant Enderman is the most dangerous mutant in the mod with 200 HP, 7 attack damage, full knockback resistance, and a staggering 96-block follow range. It moves faster than any other mutant at 0.3 movement speed. It can teleport, pick up and throw blocks at you, and summon Endersoul Clones that mirror its health pool.

The Endersoul Clones spawned during battle share the Mutant Enderman's current health and fight alongside it. The Mutant Enderman also launches Endersoul Fragments as projectile attacks that explode on impact. When killed, it drops the Endersoul Hand, one of the most powerful items in the mod. Fight it in enclosed spaces to limit its teleportation, and bring a Pumpkin on your head to avoid triggering it accidentally.

Mutant Creeper

The Mutant Creeper has 120 HP, 5 attack damage, and full knockback resistance. It is completely immune to explosions and actually heals from them, recovering half the explosion damage as health. It has three attack modes: a Jump Attack where it leaps at you and detonates on landing (power 4, or 6 when charged), a Charge Attack where it stands still and builds energy (hitting it during charge deals 2 damage back to you), and a Spawn Minions ability that releases Creeper Minions scaled to its remaining health.

When the charge attack completes without interruption, the Mutant Creeper heals 30 HP. If charging in a Thunderstorm, there's a chance it will summon lightning to become Charged, dramatically increasing its explosion power. On death, the Mutant Creeper detonates with power 8 (12 when charged), sucking nearby entities toward it over 5 seconds before the final blast. If killed by a player, it drops a Creeper Minion Egg.

Charged Mutant Creeper Death Explosion

A Charged Mutant Creeper's death explosion has power 12 with a blast radius of 18 blocks, and it lowers block resistance to a maximum of 0.8. This is catastrophic for your builds. Never fight a Charged Mutant Creeper near anything you care about.

Friendly Mutants & Tameable Creatures

Mutant Snow Golem

The Mutant Snow Golem is not hostile. It's created by splashing Chemical X on a regular Snow Golem and has 80 HP. It behaves like a much more powerful Iron Golem: it attacks hostile mobs, throws Ice blocks at enemies, places Snow and Ice in a 5x5 area around it as it walks, and can freeze water into Ice. You can claim ownership by right-clicking it (interact without a Name Tag), and it will then follow you and defend you.

The Mutant Snow Golem takes 1 damage every 60 ticks in hot biomes or rain, but heals 1 HP every 80 ticks while it's snowing. It can be sheared to remove its Jack O'Lantern head. When it touches water, it takes 16 damage and launches itself into the air while freezing the water below into an Ice platform. If killed, it sends its owner a death message.

Spider Pig

The Spider Pig is created by splashing Chemical X on a Pig, but the Pig must have the Luck effect at level 13 (amplifier 13) for the conversion to work. It has 40 HP, 3 attack damage, and the unique ability to climb walls like a Spider. It places Cobwebs on enemies when it attacks (50% chance), and deals 4 bonus damage to targets stuck in Webs. It is immune to Poison and takes no fall damage.

Spider Pigs can be tamed by having a Creeper Minion kill a Pig or Spider near them, which triggers the taming process. Once tamed, they can be saddled and ridden. While riding, you can charge up a leap by holding the jump key, which launches both you and the Spider Pig forward. They breed with Carrots, Beetroot, Porkchop, Spider Eyes, or Fermented Spider Eyes. Tamed Spider Pigs slowly regenerate 1 HP every 600 ticks and can be healed with their breeding foods.

Creeper Minion

Creeper Minions have only 4 HP but make up for their fragility with explosive attacks. They hatch from Creeper Minion Eggs dropped by defeated Mutant Creepers. To tame a wild Creeper Minion, craft a Creeper Minion Tracker and sneak-interact with the Minion. Once tamed, you can interact with empty hand to toggle sit/follow, and use the Tracker to open a configuration GUI.

Feed your Creeper Minion Gunpowder to upgrade it. The first Gunpowder enables continuous explosions (it survives its own blasts). Subsequent Gunpowder increases its explosion radius from the base 2.0 up to a maximum of 4.0, at increments of 0.11 per Gunpowder. Feed it Wheat to heal it, and you can increase its max health from 4 up to 20 by feeding Wheat when it's already at full health. Tamed Creeper Minions are immune to explosion damage and can ride on your shoulder once you enable shoulder riding via the Tracker.

Unique Weapons & Items

Hulk Hammer

Dropped by the Mutant Zombie, the Hulk Hammer is a devastating melee weapon with +8 attack damage (9 total including base), -3.0 attack speed, 64 durability, and Uncommon rarity. Its primary attack swings like a normal weapon, but its real power comes from right-clicking the ground: this creates seismic waves that travel 8 blocks in the direction you're facing, dealing damage and launching enemies. The hammer takes 1 durability per melee hit, 2 per block broken, and 1 per ground slam.

Endersoul Hand

Dropped by the Mutant Enderman, the Endersoul Hand has +5 attack damage, -2.4 attack speed, 240 durability, and Epic rarity. Right-clicking while sneaking teleports you to the block you're looking at, up to 128 blocks away (configurable). This costs 4 durability per teleport and also performs a damaging area attack at your destination. Right-clicking a block picks it up, letting you carry and throw it like the Mutant Enderman does. The Endersoul Hand is also an ingredient for brewing Chemical X.

Creeper Shard

The Creeper Shard has +2 attack damage, -2.5 attack speed, 32 durability, and Uncommon rarity. Its melee attack applies strong knockback and has a 25% chance to inflict Poison on the wielder for 4 to 6 seconds. Right-clicking consumes all remaining durability to create an explosion centered on you. The explosion power scales with remaining durability: 5 * (maxDurability - currentDamage) / 32, plus 2 bonus if the shard is fully intact. Shard explosions respect the game's TNT interaction rules based on whether you're in Creative mode.

Creeper Minion Tracker

Crafted from Iron Ingots and a Creeper Shard, the Tracker is a non-stackable utility item. Sneak-interact with a wild Creeper Minion to tame it. Once tamed, interact with the Tracker to open a configuration screen where you can toggle shoulder riding, block destruction, rename the minion, and view its stats.

Mutant Skeleton Armor

The Mutant Skeleton drops bone parts on death that can be assembled into a full set of Mutant Skeleton Armor. This is a mid-tier armor set with 15 total armor points (matching Iron Armor in protection), 9 enchantability, and no armor toughness or knockback resistance. The Skull serves as the helmet and can also be placed as a decorative block.

Crafting the full set requires multiple Mutant Skeleton kills since you need a variety of bone parts: Ribs for the Rib Cage, a Pelvis and Limbs for Leggings, Shoulder Pads, Arms, and Limbs for the Arms piece, and Limbs for Boots. The armor cannot be repaired with any material since its repair ingredient is empty. Treat each piece as a trophy that you replace when it breaks.

A single Mutant Skeleton kill won't give you enough parts for the full armor set. The Rib Cage alone requires 6 Ribs, the Chestplate needs the Rib Cage plus Arms (which need 2 Shoulder Pads and 4 Limbs), and the Leggings and Boots need additional Limbs and a Pelvis. Plan on defeating 2 to 3 Mutant Skeletons to collect everything.

Chemical X Potion

Chemical X is the key potion in Mutant Monsters that lets you create mutants on demand. It is brewed by combining a Thick Potion with any one of four mutant drop items: the Endersoul Hand, Hulk Hammer, Creeper Shard, or Mutant Skeleton Skull. The resulting Chemical X potion is an instantaneous harmful effect that must be splashed on a mob to take effect.

When Chemical X hits a mob, it spawns a Skull Spirit that orbits the target before triggering the conversion. The default conversions are: Creeper to Mutant Creeper, Enderman to Mutant Enderman, Skeleton to Mutant Skeleton, Snow Golem to Mutant Snow Golem, Zombie to Mutant Zombie, and Pig to Spider Pig. However, the Pig conversion has a special requirement: the Pig must have the Luck effect at exactly level 13 (amplifier 13). Without it, the Pig will just take damage and explode. All conversion mappings are configurable in the server config.

Chemical X does not work on boss mobs, Creeper Minions, Endersoul Clones, or mobs that are already mutant variants. If the target mob has no configured conversion, the Skull Spirit will simply damage and explode the target without transforming it.

Configuration

Mutant Monsters has two config files. The Common Config controls spawn weights for each mutant type, defaulting to 5% (0.05) of the vanilla mob's spawn weight. You can set this anywhere from 0 (disabling natural spawns) up to 20.0 (2000% of vanilla weight). Changes to spawn weights require a world restart to take effect.

The Server Config controls the Endersoul Hand teleport distance (default 128 blocks, max 128) and the Chemical X conversion mappings. You can add custom conversions for modded mobs or remove default ones by editing the mutant_x_conversions list. Each entry follows the format "source_entity,target_entity" using full namespaced IDs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I spawn mutant mobs?

Mutants spawn naturally at 5% of the vanilla mob's spawn rate. You can also use spawn eggs in Creative mode, or brew Chemical X potions (Thick Potion + any mutant drop item) and splash them on vanilla mobs to force a conversion.

Why won't the Mutant Zombie stay dead?

The Mutant Zombie has 3 extra lives. Each time its health reaches zero, it plays a death animation but then resurrects with 25% of its max health (37.5 HP). You need to kill it 4 times total for it to die permanently. Setting it on fire during its downed state will bypass the extra lives.

How do I tame a Creeper Minion?

First, kill a Mutant Creeper (you must deal the final blow) to get a Creeper Minion Egg. Wait for it to hatch into a wild Creeper Minion. Then craft a Creeper Minion Tracker (Iron Ingots + Creeper Shard), hold it, sneak, and right-click the wild Creeper Minion to tame it.

Can I repair the Endersoul Hand or Hulk Hammer?

Neither weapon has a defined repair material, so they cannot be repaired on an Anvil. You'll need to defeat the corresponding mutant again to get a replacement. Use them wisely. The Endersoul Hand has 240 durability (60 teleports), while the Hulk Hammer has only 64 durability.

How do I make a Spider Pig?

Splash a Pig with Chemical X, but the Pig must have the Luck effect at exactly level 13 (amplifier 13). This isn't obtainable through normal gameplay, so you'll need to use a command like /effect give @e[type=pig,limit=1] luck 999 13 to apply it before splashing.

Do mutants spawn in modded dimensions?

Yes. Mutant Monsters uses biome modifications to add mutant spawns wherever their vanilla counterparts already spawn. If Zombies can spawn in a modded dimension's biomes, Mutant Zombies will appear there too at the configured spawn weight percentage.
