Nether Chested Mod Guide: Massive Storage in a Single Block
Nether Chested adds the Nether Chest, a single-block storage solution with the same 54-slot capacity as a Double Chest but with each slot holding up to 512 items instead of 64. Crafted from Netherite Scrap, Nether Bricks, and a Chest, it's the ultimate late-game storage upgrade for players drowning in resources.
Overview
Nether Chested is a focused storage mod that adds exactly one block: the Nether Chest. This single-width Chest has 54 inventory slots (the same as a Double Chest) and can hold up to 512 items per slot instead of the standard 64. That means a single Nether Chest can store up to 27,648 items total, making it eight times more space-efficient than a Double Chest.
The Nether Chest uses Ender Chest-style properties (it requires a Pickaxe to mine and has the same hardness) and features a unique nether-themed appearance with Soul Fire and Portal particle effects. It also includes several configurable behaviors, including an option to make the Chest explode if opened in the Nether dimension. You can browse the crafting recipe using the Recipes tab above.

Getting Started
- 1
Gather Nether Materials
You'll need 4 Netherite Scrap and 4 Nether Bricks. Netherite Scrap comes from smelting Ancient Debris, which is found in the Nether between Y levels 8 and 22. Nether Bricks are crafted by smelting Netherrack in a Furnace and then combining 4 Nether Brick items in a 2x2 pattern.
- 2
Craft the Nether Chest
Place the ingredients on a Crafting Table in an alternating pattern: Netherite Scrap in the corners, Nether Bricks on the edges, and a regular Chest in the center. The recipe yields one Nether Chest.
- 3
Place Your Nether Chest
Place the Nether Chest like any other block. Make sure there's no solid block directly above it, or it won't open (this behavior is enabled by default but can be toggled in the config). The Chest will emit Soul Fire Flame and Nether Portal particles, giving it a distinctive look.
- 4
Start Storing Items
Open the Nether Chest to see all 54 slots arranged in 6 rows, identical to a Double Chest layout but in a single block. Every stackable item can stack up to 512 in each slot. Damaged items (tools and armor with durability loss) cannot have their stack size increased.
Nether Chest Recipe

Despite sharing the same block properties as an Ender Chest, the Nether Chest is a completely separate block with its own inventory. Unlike an Ender Chest, the Nether Chest's contents are stored in the block itself, not linked to the player. If you break a Nether Chest, all items will drop on the ground.
How the Nether Chest Works
Massive Stack Sizes
The core feature of the Nether Chest is its 8x stack size multiplier. Any item that normally stacks to 64 will stack to 512 inside the Nether Chest. Items that normally stack to 16 (like Ender Pearls or Eggs) will stack to 128. Items that don't stack at all (tools, armor, weapons with durability) remain at a stack size of 1. Specifically, items that have already taken durability damage cannot have their stack size increased.
Redstone Compatibility
The Nether Chest outputs a Redstone signal via a Comparator, just like a regular Chest. The signal strength is based on how full the container is relative to its expanded capacity. This makes it fully compatible with Redstone sorting systems and storage monitors.
Hopper and Automation Support
On Forge, the Nether Chest exposes the standard item handler capability, meaning it works with Hoppers, Pipes, and other automation mods that use Forge's item transfer system. Items piped in will respect the increased stack sizes, allowing you to fully automate filling and emptying Nether Chests.
Naming and Locking
The Nether Chest supports custom naming. If you rename it on an Anvil before placing it, the custom name will appear when you open the inventory. The block also supports Minecraft's lock mechanism, meaning it can be locked with a named item so only players holding that item can open it.
When you break a Nether Chest, ALL items inside are dropped as item entities on the ground. With up to 27,648 items inside, this can cause significant lag. Consider installing the Stxck mod (by frankv_) to reduce lag from large item entity spawns. Always empty a Nether Chest before breaking it if possible.
Piglin Interaction
Opening a Nether Chest will anger nearby Piglins, just like opening a regular Chest or Barrel in the Nether. If you're using Nether Chests in the Nether (and haven't enabled the explosion config), make sure to wear at least one piece of Gold Armor or deal with aggressive Piglins.
Configuration Options
Nether Chested provides a server-side configuration file with several useful options. The config file is located at .minecraft/config/netherchested-server.toml and can also be edited in-game via the mod menu.
Server Config Options
| stackSizeMultiplier | Default: 8 (range: 1-32) |
| explodeInNether | Default: false |
| netherExplosionStrength | Default: 5 (range: 1.0-10.0) |
| noBlockAbove | Default: true |
The stackSizeMultiplier controls how many times the normal stack size is multiplied. At the default value of 8, items that stack to 64 will stack to 512. Setting this to 32 (the maximum) would allow stacks of 2,048 items per slot, giving a single Nether Chest a theoretical capacity of 110,592 items.
The explodeInNether option adds a risk/reward mechanic. When enabled, attempting to open a Nether Chest in the Nether dimension will destroy the block and trigger an explosion. The explosion strength defaults to 5 (comparable to a Creeper) and can be configured up to 10. This is disabled by default.
The noBlockAbove option mirrors the Ender Chest's behavior of preventing the lid from opening when a solid block is placed directly on top. This is enabled by default.
If you increase the stack size multiplier beyond 8x, install the Stxck mod alongside Nether Chested. Higher multipliers mean more item entities when a Chest is broken, and Stxck prevents massive lag spikes by consolidating dropped items.
Storage Comparison
To put the Nether Chest's capacity in perspective, here's how it compares to other vanilla storage options. All values assume the standard 8x multiplier and items that stack to 64.
Storage Capacity Comparison
| Single Chest | Double Chest | Nether Chest | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slots | 27 | 54 | 54 |
| Items Per Slot | 64 | 64 | 512 |
| Total Capacity | 1,728 | 3,456 | 27,648 |
| Blocks Used | 1 | 2 | 1 |
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I connect two Nether Chests together like a Double Chest?
No. Nether Chests are always single blocks with 54 slots. They cannot combine into a double variant. Since they already have the same number of slots as a Double Chest, there's no need to combine them.
Do Hoppers work with Nether Chests?
Yes. On Forge, the Nether Chest exposes the standard item handler capability, so Hoppers, Pipes, and automation mods can insert and extract items. The increased stack sizes are fully respected during automated transfers.
Can I use a Nether Chest in the Nether?
By default, yes. You can place and open Nether Chests in any dimension. However, there's a config option called 'explodeInNether' that, when enabled, causes the Chest to explode when opened in the Nether dimension. This is disabled by default.
Does the Nether Chest keep its items when I break it?
No. When a Nether Chest is broken, all items inside are dropped on the ground as item entities. This is different from an Ender Chest, which keeps items tied to the player. Always empty a Nether Chest before mining it, especially if it contains a lot of items.
Can I change the stack size multiplier?
Yes. The server config file lets you set the multiplier anywhere from 1x (normal stacking) to 32x (2,048 items per slot). The default is 8x. Change this in the netherchested-server.toml config file or through the in-game mod menu.
What happens to unstackable items in the Nether Chest?
Items that don't normally stack (like tools, armor, and weapons) remain at a stack size of 1. The multiplier only applies to items that are already stackable. Additionally, items that have taken durability damage cannot have their stack size increased even if they would normally be stackable.
