Oh The Biomes You'll Go: Complete Biome, Block & Material Guide

Oh The Biomes You'll Go (BYG) transforms every dimension of Minecraft with over 80 breathtaking biomes spanning the Overworld, Nether, and End. Along the way you'll discover 28 new wood types, two unique ore materials, dozens of decorative stone variants, harvestable foods, and dimension-specific vegetation that makes exploration feel completely fresh.

Overview

Oh The Biomes You'll Go is a massive biome expansion mod that adds over 80 new biomes to all three Minecraft dimensions. The Overworld receives the bulk of the content with roughly 60 unique biomes ranging from flowering meadows and tropical rainforests to haunted witch forests and dramatic canyons. The Nether gets 12 new biomes including frozen caverns and glowing gardens, while the End gains 10+ alien landscapes filled with bioluminescent plants and crystalline formations.

Beyond biomes, the mod introduces 28 new wood types (each with a full set of Planks, Stairs, Slabs, Fences, Doors, Trapdoors, Buttons, Pressure Plates, Crafting Tables, Bookshelves, and Boats), multiple decorative stone types with full building block sets, two new ore materials with armor and tools, harvestable food crops, and unique vegetation for every dimension. You can browse all 790 items and blocks the mod adds using the Items tab on this page.

Getting Started

  1. 1

    Start Exploring the Overworld

As soon as you create a new world, you'll notice the landscape looks dramatically different. BYG biomes generate alongside vanilla biomes, so simply walking in any direction will reveal new terrain. Look for unfamiliar trees, colorful flowers, and unique terrain formations. Many BYG biomes have sub-biomes like clearings, hills, and forest edges that create natural transitions between regions.

  2. 2

    Harvest New Wood Types

Each BYG biome features unique tree species. Chop down any new tree to collect its Log, then craft it into Planks at your Crafting Table. Every wood type supports a complete set of building blocks including Stairs, Slabs, Fences, Gates, Doors, Trapdoors, Buttons, Pressure Plates, a matching Bookshelf, and even a wood-themed Crafting Table. Grab Aspen from Aspen Forests, Jacaranda from Jacaranda Forests, Cherry from Cherry Blossom Forests, and many more.

  3. 3

    Gather Food and Resources

Several BYG biomes contain harvestable food sources. Pick Baobab Fruit from Baobab Savannas, collect Green Apples from Skyris trees, harvest Blue Berries in certain biomes, and gather Joshua Fruit in desert regions. These foods can be eaten raw or used in pie recipes. Keep an eye out for berry bushes scattered throughout the landscape.

  4. 4

Mine for New Ores and Stones

While mining underground, you'll encounter new stone types: Rocky Stone, Scoria Stone, and Soapstone, each with full building block sets including Bricks, Cobblestone, Pillars, Tiles, Stairs, Slabs, and Walls. In specific biomes, look for Ametrine Ore (Guiana Shield, Stone Forest, and Pointed Stone Forest biomes) and Pendorite Ore (Forest Fault biome). These are the mod's two unique materials for crafting equipment.

  5. 5

Venture Into the Nether and End

Once you're ready for other dimensions, BYG transforms both the Nether and the End with entirely new biomes. The Nether gets 12 biomes with unique vegetation, blocks, and atmosphere, while the End receives 10+ biomes with alien plant life, bioluminescent features, and new building materials like Ether Stone and Therium. Each dimension-specific wood type can be crafted into a full set of building blocks.

Overworld Biomes

The Overworld receives the most content with roughly 60 primary biomes plus dozens of sub-biomes including clearings, hills, and mountain variants. These biomes are organized into natural climate zones that blend seamlessly with vanilla terrain generation.

Temperate Forests

Some of the most common BYG biomes fall into the temperate forest category. The Aspen Forest features tall, pale-barked Aspen trees with golden leaves. The Ancient Forest is densely packed with towering trees and has rare Flowering and Glowing variants as sub-biomes. The Deciduous Forest offers classic hardwood trees with seasonal leaf colors, while the Red Oak Forest provides a warm autumn palette. The Enchanted Forest has a mystical atmosphere with Blue Enchanted and Green Enchanted trees that produce uniquely colored wood. Each forest type has matching hill and clearing sub-biomes that generate naturally at the edges.

Tropical and Warm Biomes

The Tropical Rainforest and Tropical Fungal Rainforest are lush, dense biomes teeming with oversized mushrooms and Mahogany trees. The Guiana Shield features a dramatic landscape where Ametrine Ore generates underground. The Baobab Savanna introduces the iconic Baobab tree with its thick trunk and edible Baobab Fruit. The Jacaranda Forest blooms with purple and indigo flowering trees, and the Cherry Blossom Forest carpets the ground in pink petals. The Redwood Tropics combine massive Redwood trees with tropical vegetation. Mangrove Marshes, Cypress Swamplands, and the Bayou bring swampy wetland environments with their distinctive tree species.

Cold and Mountain Biomes

The Alps biome creates dramatic mountain peaks with Alpine Foothills at the base. Dover Mountains feature striking white cliffs, while Red Rock Mountains have layered red sandstone formations with Highlands and Lowlands sub-biomes. The Coniferous Forest, Evergreen Taiga, and Blue Taiga offer dense needle-leaf forests, each with snowy variants for colder regions. The Cika Woods feature distinctive Cika trees found at higher elevations. The Shattered Glacier generates dramatic icy terrain, and the Bluff Steeps create towering cliff faces with Bluff Peaks above.

Open and Unique Biomes

The Allium Fields and Rose Fields are vast expanses of colorful flowers, while the Amaranth Fields glow with vibrant magenta vegetation. The Prairie and Meadow biomes offer open grasslands with wildflowers. The Mojave Desert and Dunes biomes expand desert landscapes with new sand colors (Black Sand, White Sand, Blue Sand, Purple Sand, and Pink Sand) and matching Sandstone variants. The Canyons biome carves deep gorges into the terrain, and the Stone Forest creates towering stone pillars. The Skyris Highlands introduce Skyris trees at elevated altitudes with Peaks and Steeps sub-biomes. Unique water biomes include the Great Lakes, Dead Sea, and Tropical Islands, plus special beaches like Rainbow Beach and White Beach.

Biome-Specific Ores

Ametrine Ore only spawns in the Guiana Shield, Stone Forest, and Pointed Stone Forest biomes. Pendorite Ore is exclusive to the Forest Fault sub-biome. If you're hunting for these materials, use the /locatebiome command to find these specific biomes.

Nether Biomes

BYG completely overhauls the Nether with 12 new biomes, each with unique vegetation, blocks, and atmosphere. When the "ControlNether" config option is enabled (which it is by default), these biomes replace the vanilla Nether generation entirely.

The Sythian Torrids is one of the most resource-rich Nether biomes, featuring Sythian trees that produce a full wood set plus Sythian Scaffolding and Sythian Wart Blocks. The Embur Bog is a misty swamp-like biome with Embur trees, Embur Gel Blocks that behave like Slime Blocks, Embur Lily pads, and Embur Wart mushrooms. The Crimson Gardens extend vanilla's Crimson Forest theme with Crimson Berry Bushes that produce edible Crimson Berries. The Glowstone Gardens feature abundant natural Glowstone formations surrounded by luminescent vegetation.

The Warped Desert is a barren wasteland with Warped Cactus blocks and Quartzite Sand. The Quartz Desert offers vast expanses of quartz-based terrain. The Brimstone Caverns glow with magma and fire, while the Magma Wastes are even more treacherous with flowing lava lakes. The Subzero Hypogeal flips the Nether on its head with a frozen cavern featuring ice and snow. The Wailing Garth is a haunting biome with eerie vegetation, the Withering Woods feature dead and decaying trees with Lament Wood, and the Weeping Mire is a dark, damp biome with hanging vines. The Nether biomes introduce unique blocks like Blue Netherrack, Yellow Nether Bricks, Mossy Netherrack, and Anthracite Ore (a coal-like fuel source).

Nether Bristle Deals Damage

Watch out for Nether Bristle plants in certain Nether biomes. Walking through them deals contact damage similar to Berry Bushes in the Overworld, but in the Nether where you're already managing lava and hostile mobs.

End Biomes

The End dimension receives a dramatic transformation with 10+ new biomes. Like the Nether, BYG can take full control of End generation when the "ControlEnd" config option is enabled (default: true). These biomes generate on the outer End islands beyond the main island where the Ender Dragon resides.

The Bulbis Gardens are whimsical islands covered in bulbous Bulbis plants with matching Bulbis wood in both standard and purple variants. The Nightshade Forest is a dark, mystical woodland with Nightshade trees, Flowering Nightshade Leaves that emit light, and Nightshade Berry Bushes that produce edible Nightshade Berries and can be baked into Nightshade Berry Pie. The Ethereal Islands float in the void with Ether trees, Ether Grass, Ether Bulbs for lighting, and a full set of Ether Stone building blocks. Sub-biomes include Ethereal Forest and Ethereal Clearing.

The Ivis Fields feature alien Ivis Roots and Sprouts across a strange landscape. The Viscal Isles (with a Shattered variant) are covered in Sculk-like growth blocks. The Shulkren Forest has dangling Shulkren Vines and unique vegetation. The Imparius Grove grows massive Imparius mushroom-like trees with Imparius Vines and Fungal Filament. The Shattered Desert and Shattered Desert Isles feature Oddity Cactus and desert-themed End terrain. The Purpur Peaks expand on vanilla's Purpur theme with mountain-like terrain, and the Cryptic Wastes are barren wastelands with Cryptic Stone and special fire variants. End biomes also introduce Therium, a crystalline material used for decorative blocks including Therium Crystal, Therium Block, Chiseled Therium, Therium Glass, Therium Lanterns, and Therium Lamps.

Wood Types and Building Blocks

One of the biggest draws of BYG is its enormous selection of 28 wood types. Each one comes from a specific biome and includes a complete set: Log, Wood, Stripped Log, Stripped Wood, Planks, Stairs, Slab, Fence, Fence Gate, Door, Trapdoor, Button, Pressure Plate, Crafting Table, Bookshelf, and Boat.

Overworld Wood Types

The 21 Overworld wood types are: Aspen, Baobab, Blue Enchanted, Cherry, Cika, Cypress, Ebony, Fir, Green Enchanted, Holly, Jacaranda, Mahogany, Mangrove, Maple, Palm, Pine, Rainbow Eucalyptus, Redwood, Skyris, Willow, Witch Hazel, and Zelkova. Each has distinct textures that provide builders with a massive palette of colors ranging from the pale white of Aspen to the rich dark tones of Ebony and the vibrant Rainbow Eucalyptus.

Nether Wood Types

Two Nether wood types are available: Sythian (from the Sythian Torrids) and Embur (from the Embur Bog). The Lament wood type comes from the Withering Woods and has a haunting purple-black appearance. All three are fire-resistant like vanilla Crimson and Warped wood.

End Wood Types

Four End wood types expand building options in the End dimension: Bulbis (from Bulbis Gardens), Nightshade (from Nightshade Forest), Ether (from Ethereal Islands), and Imparius (from Imparius Grove). These provide alien-looking wood textures perfect for End-themed builds.

Decorative Stones

BYG adds several stone variants that generate naturally underground or in specific biomes. Rocky Stone, Scoria Stone, and Soapstone each come with a full building block set: base block, Cobblestone, Bricks, Pillar, Tile, Stairs, Slabs, and Walls. Dacite follows the same pattern. Red Rock is another major stone type with regular, Mossy, Chiseled, and Cracked Brick variants, plus matching Stairs, Slabs, and Walls for each. These stones generate based on config settings and can be toggled on or off.

For colored Sand variants, the mod adds Black Sand, White Sand, Blue Sand, Purple Sand, and Pink Sand, each with matching Sandstone, Chiseled Sandstone, Cut Sandstone, and Smooth Sandstone blocks. The Ether Stone in the End dimension also features Cobbled and Carved variants with full building block sets.

BYG Crafting Tables Are Functional

Each wood type's Crafting Table is fully functional, just like the vanilla Crafting Table. They're purely cosmetic alternatives that let you match your workstation to your build's wood theme. The same goes for Bookshelves, which power Enchanting Tables just like vanilla ones.

Ores and Equipment

BYG introduces two unique ore materials, each with distinct strengths that cater to different playstyles. Both ores are biome-exclusive, meaning you'll need to explore specific locations to find them.

Ametrine

Ametrine Ore generates exclusively in the Guiana Shield, Stone Forest, and Pointed Stone Forest biomes at Y level 56 and below (configurable). Mining it drops Ametrine Gems, which serve as the repair material for all Ametrine equipment. You'll also find Budding Ametrine Ore, a special variant that produces Ametrine Clusters over time, similar to vanilla Amethyst. Ametrine Gems can be crafted into decorative Ametrine Blocks.

Ametrine armor is the mod's premium defensive option. The full set provides 24 armor points (4 Boots, 7 Leggings, 9 Chestplate, 4 Helmet) with 3.2 armor toughness, which matches Netherite's toughness. With a durability factor of 39 (the same as Netherite), a full Ametrine set is extremely durable. The set has an enchantability of 15.

The Ametrine tool tier is unusual: it has harvest level 4, a blistering 16.0 mining speed (far above Diamond's 8.0 or Netherite's 9.0), but only 64 durability and 0.8 base attack damage. These tools are designed as mining speed specialists, not combat weapons. You'll chew through blocks incredibly fast, but the tools break quickly. Ametrine also has 25 enchantability, making it the easiest material in the mod to enchant. An Ametrine Horse Armor is also available.

Pendorite

Pendorite Ore is found only in the Forest Fault sub-biome at Y level 56 and below (configurable). Mining it yields Pendorite Scraps, the repair material for Pendorite gear. Pendorite Scraps can be crafted into Pendorite Blocks for storage.

Pendorite tools are the opposite of Ametrine: they prioritize raw power and durability. With harvest level 5 (above even Netherite's level 4), 2,500 durability, 10.0 mining speed, and 4.0 base attack damage, Pendorite tools are the strongest in the mod. The full tool set includes a Sword, Pickaxe, Axe, Shovel, Hoe, and a unique Battleaxe. Enchantability is 15.

Pendorite armor, however, is deliberately weak. The protection values are only 2 Boots, 5 Leggings, 4 Chestplate, 1 Helmet (12 total), with 0.0 toughness and a low durability factor of 15. This makes Pendorite a "glass cannon" material: amazing tools and weapons, but poor armor. A Pendorite Horse Armor is also available.

Food and Harvestable Items

Several BYG biomes feature harvestable food sources that add variety to your diet. Baobab Fruit drops from Baobab trees in the Baobab Savanna and can be eaten directly. Green Apples grow on Skyris trees in the Skyris Highlands and can be baked into Green Apple Pie. Joshua Fruit is found in desert biomes and can be cooked into Cooked Joshua Fruit for extra nutrition. Blue Berries can be found in certain temperate biomes.

Dimension-specific foods are also available. Crimson Berries grow on bushes in the Nether's Crimson Gardens and can be crafted into Crimson Berry Pie. Nightshade Berries grow in the End's Nightshade Forest and produce Nightshade Berry Pie. These dimension-specific foods make extended trips to the Nether and End more sustainable without packing a full inventory of provisions from the Overworld.

Other notable collectible items include Peat (a fuel source found in certain biomes), Mud Balls that can be crafted into Mud Blocks and Mud Bricks, Water Silk (a lily-pad-like plant), Anthracite (a Nether fuel ore), and Lignite (another fuel variant). Chain Plating is a crafting material used in certain recipes.

Unique Vegetation and Special Blocks

Beyond trees, BYG adds a staggering number of flowers, mushrooms, grasses, and specialty plants. The Overworld biomes feature dozens of new flower types (many plantable in Flower Pots), tall flowers, grass variants, and special plants like the Pollen Block that creates a misty atmospheric effect. The Glowshroom Bayou features bioluminescent mushrooms with matching giant mushroom variants.

Nether vegetation includes Sythian Roots, Sythian Sprouts, Sythian Stalks, Hanging Sythian Roots, Embur Roots, Embur Sprouts, Embur Gel Vines, and Embur Lilies. Sythian Scaffolding functions like vanilla Scaffolding but is crafted from Sythian materials, making it a useful building tool in the Nether.

End vegetation is especially diverse. Ether Grass, Ether Bush, Ether Foliage, and Tall Ether Grass cover the Ethereal Islands. Ether Bulbs provide natural lighting. Nightshade Sprouts and Nightshade Roots grow in dark End forests. Bulbis Sprouts cover the Bulbis Gardens. Ivis Roots and Ivis Sprouts populate the Ivis Fields. Shulkren Vines dangle from Shulkren Forest trees. Imparius Mushroom Branches, Imparius Vines, and Fungal Imparius Filament create the alien fungal atmosphere of the Imparius Grove. Sculk Growth blocks spread across the Viscal Isles.

Saplings Work in All Dimensions

BYG saplings can be planted and grown in their home dimension. Nether saplings like Sythian and Lament grow on appropriate Nether blocks, while End saplings like Ether, Nightshade, and Bulbis grow on their dimension's soil types. Collect saplings to set up tree farms in any dimension.

Structures

BYG adds the Volcano structure, a massive terrain feature that generates in specific biomes. Volcanoes create dramatic mountain formations with lava cores, making for impressive landmarks and dangerous terrain to navigate. They spawn rarely and create unique exploration opportunities when discovered.

Configuration

BYG provides a config file (byg-common.toml) that gives you significant control over world generation. The most impactful options are "ControlNether" and "ControlEnd", both enabled by default. When enabled, BYG takes over dimension generation entirely. Disabling these options lets vanilla biomes generate instead while keeping BYG's blocks and items available.

Biome size for the Nether and End can be adjusted from 0 to 10 (default: 3), controlling how large each biome patch is. The End has separate settings for main island biomes and void (small island) biomes. A blacklist/whitelist system lets you exclude specific BYG biomes from Nether generation or restrict it to only your favorites.

Ore and stone generation is fully configurable. Each ore and stone type has toggle, Y-level, cluster size, and spawns-per-chunk settings. For example, Ametrine defaults to Y level 56, cluster size 4, 10 attempts per chunk. Pendorite uses the same defaults. Rocky Stone generates at Y 63 with size 20 clusters, while Scoria Stone generates deeper at Y 25. All of these can be adjusted or disabled entirely through datapacks, which take priority over config values.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does BYG work with other biome mods like Biomes O' Plenty?

BYG can run alongside other biome mods in the Overworld since each mod adds its biomes to the generation pool. However, for the Nether and End, BYG takes full control when ControlNether/ControlEnd are enabled. If you want another mod's Nether biomes instead, disable BYG's control in the config. Running multiple biome mods together may increase world generation time slightly.

Where do I find Ametrine Ore?

Ametrine Ore only generates in three specific biomes: Guiana Shield, Stone Forest, and Pointed Stone Forest. Use the /locatebiome command (e.g., /locatebiome byg:guiana_shield) to find the nearest one. Mine below Y level 56 for the best chances. The ore drops Ametrine Gems, which craft into armor with Netherite-tier toughness.

Where do I find Pendorite Ore?

Pendorite Ore is exclusive to the Forest Fault sub-biome. This biome generates as a variant within certain forest regions. Use /locatebiome byg:forest_fault to find one. Mine below Y level 56. Pendorite Scraps craft into tools with 2,500 durability, harvest level 5, and 10.0 mining speed, making them superior to Netherite tools.

Can I disable specific BYG biomes?

For the Nether, yes. The config includes a blacklist/whitelist system that lets you exclude specific biomes from generation. Each biome's individual JSON config file also has a weight value that can be set to 0 to prevent generation. For the Overworld, individual biome configs with weight values let you control spawn frequency. Setting a biome's weight to 0 effectively disables it.

Do BYG Bookshelves work for Enchanting?

Yes. All 28 BYG Bookshelf variants function identically to vanilla Bookshelves for powering Enchanting Tables. They count toward the maximum of 15 bookshelves needed for level 30 enchantments. Choose whichever wood matches your build's aesthetic.

Is BYG compatible with Forge and Fabric?

This version of BYG is built for Minecraft Forge. A separate Fabric version may be available depending on the release. Check the CurseForge page for the latest version compatibility and mod loader support. The mod is one of the most popular biome mods with nearly 60 million downloads across all versions.
