ProjectE Mod Guide: Transmutation, EMC, and Equivalent Exchange for Modern Minecraft
ProjectE brings the legendary Equivalent Exchange 2 to modern Minecraft, letting you break down any item into EMC (Energy-Matter Covalence) and transmute it into anything else. With powerful tools, armor, rings, and an automated EMC generation system, ProjectE transforms your Minecraft experience from resource gathering to full alchemical mastery.
Overview
ProjectE is a complete rewrite of the classic Equivalent Exchange 2 mod for modern Minecraft. At its core is the EMC (Energy-Matter Covalence) system: every item in the game has an EMC value, and you can convert items freely between each other as long as the EMC math adds up. Throw in a stack of Cobblestone worth 1 EMC each, and you have 64 EMC to spend on something more valuable.
The mod adds a massive progression system spanning transmutation devices, passive EMC generators, powerful Dark Matter and Red Matter tools and armor, magical rings and amulets, and even a complete set of Gem Armor that makes you nearly invincible. You can browse all items the mod adds and their recipes using the tabs on this page.
Getting Started
- 1
Craft the Philosopher's Stone
Your journey begins with the Philosopher's Stone, crafted from Redstone, Glowstone Dust, and a Diamond in an alternating pattern. This item is never consumed in crafting and serves as a catalyst for nearly every other recipe in the mod. While holding it, press C to open a portable crafting grid, and press V to charge items.
- 2
Build a Transmutation Table
Craft a Transmutation Table using the Philosopher's Stone, Obsidian, and Stone. Place it down and open it to access the transmutation interface. Throw any items into the left slot to "burn" them, converting them into stored EMC. Once items have been learned by the table, you can withdraw them anytime as long as you have enough EMC. Start by tossing in cheap items like Cobblestone or Coal to build up your EMC reserve.
- 3
Learn Valuable Items
The Transmutation Table only lets you withdraw items it has "learned." Put at least one of each item you want to be able to create. Diamonds, Emeralds, Iron Ingots, and other valuable resources should be taught early. Once learned, items are permanently available in that table. The search bar lets you find learned items quickly.
- 4
Craft Your First Fuel
Using the Philosopher's Stone as a catalyst, combine four Coal to create Alchemical Coal (512 EMC each). Four Alchemical Coal makes one Mobius Fuel, and four Mobius Fuel makes one Aeternalis Fuel. These fuels are essential both as crafting ingredients and as fuel for Energy Collectors and furnaces. The burn times scale dramatically: Coal is 1,600 ticks, Alchemical Coal is 6,400, Mobius Fuel is 25,600, and Aeternalis Fuel is 102,400 ticks.
- 5
Work Toward Dark Matter
Dark Matter is crafted from eight Aeternalis Fuel and one Diamond Block. This is the gateway material to the mod's powerful tools and armor. Once you have Dark Matter, you can craft it into Dark Matter Blocks (4 from a 2x2 grid) which are used in higher-tier recipes. Red Matter requires three Dark Matter and six Aeternalis Fuel, opening up the endgame equipment.
While holding the Philosopher's Stone, press C to open a portable crafting grid. The Stone is never consumed in recipes, so you can craft Alchemical Coal, Mobius Fuel, and Aeternalis Fuel anywhere without needing a Crafting Table.
The EMC System
EMC (Energy-Matter Covalence) is the universal currency of ProjectE. Every vanilla and most modded items have an EMC value assigned to them. A piece of Dirt is worth 1 EMC, a Diamond is 8,192 EMC, and an Emerald is 16,384 EMC. The system works bidirectionally: you can break items down into EMC and then reconstruct different items from that stored energy.
EMC values are calculated from crafting recipes. If an item can be crafted from cheaper components, its EMC value is the sum of the components. Enchanted items gain a bonus of 5,000 EMC divided by the enchantment rarity, multiplied by the enchantment level. Items stored in Klein Stars also add their stored EMC to the item's total value when placed in a Transmutation Table.
Transmutation Table and Tablet
The Transmutation Table is your primary interface with the EMC system. It learns items you place into it and stores your EMC balance. You can search through learned items and withdraw them as long as you have enough EMC. The Transmutation Tablet is the portable version, crafted from four Dark Matter Blocks and a Transmutation Table, giving you full transmutation access anywhere in the world.
Covalence Dust
Covalence Dust comes in three tiers: Low, Medium, and High. These are used in several crafting recipes and serve as repair materials. You can repair damaged tools and armor by combining them with the appropriate tier of Covalence Dust in a crafting grid. The tier required depends on the tool material: wooden and stone tools need Low Dust, iron and gold need Medium Dust, and diamond or higher need High Dust. The number of dust pieces needed matches the material count of the item (1 for shovels, 2 for swords, 3 for pickaxes, etc.).
Passive EMC Generation
One of ProjectE's most powerful features is the ability to generate EMC passively using Energy Collectors. These blocks harvest energy from sunlight and use it to upgrade fuel items placed inside them, converting cheap fuels into progressively more valuable ones. Place Charcoal into a Collector, and over time it will be upgraded through Redstone, Coal, Gunpowder, Glowstone, Alchemical Coal, Mobius Fuel, and eventually Aeternalis Fuel.
Energy Collectors come in three tiers. The MK1 generates 4 EMC per tick with a 10,000 EMC buffer. The MK2 triples that to 12 EMC per tick with a 30,000 buffer. The MK3 produces 40 EMC per tick with a 60,000 buffer. Generation rates scale with sunlight exposure: MK1 and MK2 produce less at lower light levels, but the MK3 always runs at full power regardless of light. You can also use the lock slot to prevent fuel from upgrading beyond a certain tier.
Anti-Matter Relays
Anti-Matter Relays act as EMC routers, collecting EMC from adjacent Energy Collectors and funneling it toward Energy Condensers or Klein Stars. They also accept fuel items directly, burning them to add to their EMC buffer. The MK1 transfers 64 EMC per tick with a 100,000 buffer. The MK2 handles 192 EMC per tick with a 1,000,000 buffer. The MK3 manages a massive 640 EMC per tick with a 10,000,000 buffer. Place Relays between your Collectors and Condensers to create an efficient EMC pipeline.
Energy Condensers
Energy Condensers are the output end of your EMC generation system. Place the item you want to duplicate in the lock slot (top-left), and the Condenser will consume items from its 91-slot inventory, converting their EMC into copies of the locked item. It also draws EMC from adjacent Relays. The MK2 Condenser adds separate input and output sides, making automation with hoppers and pipes straightforward. Crafting a Condenser requires an Alchemical Chest, Diamonds, and Obsidian; the MK2 needs Dark Matter Blocks and Red Matter Blocks.
EMC Generation Blocks Comparison
| Collector MK1 | Collector MK2 | Collector MK3 | Relay MK1 | Relay MK2 | Relay MK3 | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| EMC/Tick | 4 | 12 | 40 | 64 | 192 | 640 |
| Max Buffer | 10,000 | 30,000 | 60,000 | 100,000 | 1,000,000 | 10,000,000 |
| Sunlight Dependent | Yes | Yes | No | N/A | N/A | N/A |
Klein Stars
Klein Stars are portable EMC batteries that power many of ProjectE's tools and abilities. They come in six tiers, each holding four times the EMC of the previous tier. The Klein Star Ein holds 50,000 EMC, Zwei holds 200,000, Drei holds 800,000, Vier holds 3,200,000, Sphere holds 12,800,000, and the Omega holds a massive 51,200,000 EMC.
Craft a Klein Star Ein from eight Mobius Fuel and one Diamond. To upgrade, combine four Klein Stars of the same tier in a crafting grid; they merge into the next tier, preserving all stored EMC. Klein Stars can be charged by placing them in Energy Collectors or Anti-Matter Relays. Keep an Omega in your inventory to fuel the most power-hungry items like the Catalytic Lens and Ring of Arcana.
Klein Star Capacities
| Klein Star Ein | 50,000 EMC |
| Klein Star Zwei | 200,000 EMC |
| Klein Star Drei | 800,000 EMC |
| Klein Star Vier | 3,200,000 EMC |
| Klein Star Sphere | 12,800,000 EMC |
| Klein Star Omega | 51,200,000 EMC |
Tools and Weapons
ProjectE adds two complete tiers of tools (Dark Matter and Red Matter) plus two ultimate combo weapons. All ProjectE tools are unbreakable, have harvest level 4, and feature a unique charge mechanic. Press V to increase the charge level, which boosts mining speed and expands the area of effect for special abilities. Sneak and press V to decrease charge.
Dark Matter Tools
Dark Matter tools have a base mining speed of 14.0, increasing by 12.0 per charge level. The Dark Matter Sword deals 12.0 base damage, and the Dark Matter Hammer deals 13.0. All DM tools are crafted from Dark Matter and Diamonds in standard tool patterns. Each tool has special right-click abilities: the Pickaxe can vein mine ores, the Axe can clear entire forests, the Hoe tills in an area, and the Shovel flattens terrain in a radius that scales with charge level.
Red Matter Tools
Red Matter tools upgrade from their Dark Matter counterparts, crafted by surrounding the DM tool with Red Matter and Dark Matter. They have a base mining speed of 16.0, increasing by 14.0 per charge level. The Red Matter Sword deals 16.0 base damage and the Red Matter Hammer deals 13.0. Red Matter tools share the same special abilities as Dark Matter tools but with larger effective ranges.
Red Katar and Morning Star
The Red Katar is the ultimate melee weapon, combining the Red Matter Shears, Axe, Sword, and Hoe with additional Red Matter. It deals 23.0 base damage and has a devastating 1,000 damage instant-kill attack. The Morning Star (Red Star) combines the Red Matter Hammer, Pickaxe, and Shovel, dealing 20.0 base damage while functioning as every mining tool simultaneously. Both weapons inherit all the special abilities of their component tools.
Weapon Damage Comparison
| DM Sword | RM Sword | Morning Star | Red Katar | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Base Damage | 12.0 | 16.0 | 20.0 | 23.0 |
| Mining Speed | 14.0 + 12.0/charge | 16.0 + 14.0/charge | 16.0 + 14.0/charge | 16.0 + 14.0/charge |
| Harvest Level | 4 | 4 | 4 | 4 |
| Durability | Unbreakable | Unbreakable | Unbreakable | Unbreakable |
Using AOE abilities on tools consumes EMC from Klein Stars in your inventory. Higher charge levels affect larger areas but drain EMC faster. Always carry a charged Klein Star when using powered abilities, or you will find your tools doing nothing when activated.
Armor
ProjectE adds three tiers of armor, each completely unbreakable. Dark Matter Armor is crafted from Dark Matter in standard armor patterns. It provides 4 armor points for helmet and boots, and 6 for chestplate and leggings, reducing damage by 20% for head/feet pieces and 30% for chest/leg pieces. DM Armor can absorb up to 100 damage on head/feet and 150 on chest/legs before the protection resets.
Red Matter Armor upgrades from Dark Matter Armor using Red Matter. It shares the same armor point display (4/6) but absorbs significantly more punishment: up to 250 damage on head/feet and 350 on chest/legs. Red Matter Helmet also acts as a Thaumcraft Goggles of Revealing if that mod is installed, showing aura nodes.
Gem Armor is the ultimate tier, crafted from Red Matter and other high-end materials. Each piece has unique abilities. The Gem Helmet provides night vision. The Gem Chestplate enables creative-style flight. The Gem Leggings grant sprint speed bonuses. The Gem Boots negate fall damage. With a full set equipped, you are nearly invincible, absorbing up to 400 damage on head/feet pieces and 500 on chest/legs. All Gem Armor pieces are completely unbreakable.
Armor Tier Comparison
| Dark Matter | Red Matter | Gem Armor | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Armor Points (Head/Feet) | 4 | 4 | 4 |
| Armor Points (Chest/Legs) | 6 | 6 | 6 |
| Max Absorb (Head/Feet) | 100 | 250 | 400 |
| Max Absorb (Chest/Legs) | 150 | 350 | 500 |
| Durability | Unbreakable | Unbreakable | Unbreakable |
| Special | None | Thaumcraft compat | Flight, night vision, speed, no fall damage |
Rings, Amulets, and Accessories
ProjectE includes a wide variety of magical accessories, many of which can be activated by holding them in your inventory or placed on a Dark Matter Pedestal for area-wide effects. Items that show purple text stating "On Pedestal" in their tooltip can be placed on pedestals. Right-click a pedestal to toggle its effect on and off.
Amulets
The Evertide Amulet creates rain and snowstorms, attempting to start rain every second. Press R to fire a Water Projectile that extinguishes fire and creates water source blocks. It also functions as an infinite Water Bucket on cauldrons and similar blocks. The Volcanite Amulet is the fire counterpart, firing Lava Projectiles and acting as an infinite Lava Bucket. Both work on pedestals.
Rings
The Iron Band is the base ring, crafted from Iron Ingots and a Lava Bucket (or Volcanite Amulet). It serves as a crafting component for all other rings. The Black Hole Band sucks in nearby item drops and puts them into your inventory. The Harvest Goddess Band accelerates nearby crop growth and auto-harvests mature crops. The Ignition Ring sets nearby mobs on fire. The Zero Ring extinguishes entities and freezes the ground around you. The Swift Wolf's Rending Gale (SWRG) shoots lightning at nearby mobs.
The Ring of Arcana is the ultimate ring, combining the Zero Ring, Ignition Ring, Harvest Goddess Band, and SWRG with Red Matter. It enables creative flight and combines all four component ring abilities into one item.
Stones
The Body Stone restores nearby players' hunger by 0.5 shanks on the pedestal. The Soul Stone heals nearby players by 0.5 hearts. The Mind Stone absorbs nearby XP orbs and stores them. The Life Stone combines Body and Soul Stone effects, restoring both hunger and health simultaneously. All four work on pedestals with configurable cooldown rates.
Other Accessories
The Watch of Flowing Time grants 18 bonus ticks to nearby blocks every tick when placed on a pedestal, massively accelerating furnaces, crops, and machines. It also slows nearby mobs to 10% of their normal speed. The Void Ring combines the Black Hole Band and Gem of Eternal Density with Red Matter, condensing items on the go. The Gem of Eternal Density automatically condenses low-value items in your inventory into higher-value ones. The Repair Talisman passively repairs all damaged items in your inventory and works on a pedestal to repair nearby players' items.
The Watch of Flowing Time on a pedestal can cause severe server lag by giving 18 bonus ticks to every block in range every single tick. Multiple watches stack and boost each other. On multiplayer servers, this item is frequently banned or restricted. Always check with server administrators before using it, and never place multiple watches near complex machinery without understanding the performance impact.
Utility Blocks and Items
Alchemical Chest and Bags
The Alchemical Chest is a large storage block with 104 slots. It serves as the base for crafting Energy Condensers and Alchemical Bags. Alchemical Bags are portable versions of the chest, crafted by combining an Alchemical Chest with Wool and High Covalence Dust. They come in all 16 Wool colors, and each color maintains its own separate inventory. The Black Hole Band works inside bags, automatically collecting nearby items into the bag's inventory.
Matter Furnaces
The Dark Matter Furnace and Red Matter Furnace are vastly upgraded Furnaces. They smelt items extremely quickly and can use ProjectE's high-tier fuels. The DM Furnace is crafted from Dark Matter Blocks surrounding a Furnace. The RM Furnace upgrades from the DM Furnace using Red Matter Blocks, smelting even faster. When combined with Aeternalis Fuel (102,400 tick burn time), a single piece of fuel will smelt thousands of items.
Explosives
The Nova Catalyst is a powerful explosive block that creates a 16-block radius explosion when triggered. The Nova Cataclysm is its bigger sibling with a devastating 48-block radius. The Destruction Catalyst is a handheld version that breaks blocks in a radius when used, consuming EMC per block. The Hyperkinetic Lens fires explosive projectiles with a radius scaling from 4 to 16 blocks depending on charge level, at a cost of 384 to 2,304 EMC per shot. The Catalytic Lens combines the Hyperkinetic Lens and Destruction Catalyst into one item.
Other Utility Items
The Mercurial Eye lets you place blocks at range by consuming EMC from a Klein Star, essentially creating building blocks out of thin air. Press C to select which block type to place. The Interdiction Torch repels hostile mobs in a radius around it, making it excellent for base defense. The Archangel Smite fires homing arrows at nearby mobs when placed on a pedestal. Divining Rods scan nearby blocks and report the average and maximum EMC values in the area, useful for locating valuable ores underground.
Progression Path
ProjectE follows a clear progression from simple transmutation to godlike power. In the early game, you craft the Philosopher's Stone and Transmutation Table, learning items and building up an EMC reserve by burning cheap materials. Your first goal should be to craft enough Alchemical Coal and Mobius Fuel to create Klein Stars and Dark Matter.
The mid game opens up once you have Dark Matter. Craft a full set of DM tools and armor, build your first Energy Collector array with Anti-Matter Relays feeding into an Energy Condenser, and start passively generating EMC. Work toward Red Matter by upgrading through the fuel chain or using your Condenser to duplicate Dark Matter directly.
The endgame is where ProjectE truly shines. Red Matter tools and armor make you incredibly powerful, the Red Katar and Morning Star combine multiple tools into devastating all-in-one weapons, Gem Armor grants creative flight and near invulnerability, and the Ring of Arcana combines four ring powers into one. With a fully upgraded Collector/Relay/Condenser array boosted by Watches of Flowing Time, you can generate virtually unlimited resources of any type.
ProjectE Progression
Configuration
ProjectE offers extensive configuration options in its config file. Server administrators can individually disable the crafting recipes for every major block including all three tiers of Energy Collectors, all three tiers of Anti-Matter Relays, both Energy Condensers, the Transmutation Table, both Matter Furnaces, the Dark Matter Pedestal, and the Alchemical Chest. There is also an option to replace Diamonds with Nether Stars in recipes for increased difficulty (altCraftingMat setting).
Pedestal cooldowns are individually configurable for every item that supports pedestal mode. The Watch of Flowing Time's bonus ticks (default 18) and mob slowness factor (default 0.1) are adjustable. The Interdiction Torch can be set to affect all entities or only hostile mobs. The Pickaxe's right-click behavior can be switched between targeted vein mining and AOE vein mining around the player.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why can I not take items out of the Transmutation Table?
You need both enough stored EMC and the item must be "learned" by the table. Place at least one of any item into the burn slot first to teach it to the table. Once learned, items appear in the output grid. If the item appears grayed out, you do not have enough EMC to withdraw it.
How do I charge my tools and items?
Press V while holding a chargeable item to increase its charge level. Sneak and press V to decrease it. Higher charge levels increase mining speed and AOE range but consume more EMC when using special abilities. Klein Stars in your inventory provide the EMC fuel for powered abilities.
Does ProjectE work with other mods' items?
Yes. ProjectE automatically calculates EMC values for modded items based on their crafting recipes. If an item can be crafted entirely from vanilla ingredients (which have predefined EMC values), ProjectE will compute and assign an EMC value. Items without valid crafting chains to vanilla materials will not have EMC values unless manually assigned via the config. Red Matter Armor also has built-in Thaumcraft compatibility, functioning as Goggles of Revealing.
What is the fastest way to generate EMC?
Build an EMC flower: place an Energy Condenser in the center, surround it with Anti-Matter Relays (MK3 for best throughput at 640 EMC/tick each), then surround the Relays with Energy Collectors MK3 (40 EMC/tick each). Add Watches of Flowing Time on Dark Matter Pedestals nearby to multiply the tick rate of all blocks in range. Multiple watches compound, creating extremely fast generation.
Why is my Energy Condenser not producing items?
Check three things: the lock slot (top-left) must contain the item you want to duplicate, the item must have an EMC value, and there must be a source of EMC (either items in the condenser's inventory to consume, or adjacent Anti-Matter Relays providing EMC). Also verify the condenser's inventory is not completely full with the target item.
Can I use ProjectE items on a Dark Matter Pedestal?
Only certain items work on the pedestal. Check the item's tooltip for purple text that says "On Pedestal" followed by a description of the effect. Items that work include the Watch of Flowing Time, Evertide Amulet, Volcanite Amulet, Harvest Goddess Band, Black Hole Band, Archangel Smite, Repair Talisman, Body Stone, Soul Stone, and several others. Right-click the pedestal to toggle the effect on and off.
