Shrink Mod Guide: Resize Entities, Capture Mobs & Explore at Any Scale
The Shrink mod lets you resize any living entity in the game, from tiny 0.21x scale all the way up to 10x normal size. Shrink yourself to squeeze through tight spaces, scale down mobs for fun or capture them in bottles, and adjust your size with a simple GUI. It only adds two items but completely changes how you interact with the world.
Overview
Shrink is a lightweight Forge mod that adds the ability to resize any living entity in the game. With just two items, the Shrinking Device and the Mob Bottle, you can scale yourself down to squeeze through gaps, enlarge mobs for a challenge, or capture shrunken creatures in Glass Bottles for transport. You can browse the mod's recipes and items using the tabs on this page.
The mod uses a Forge Energy (FE) power system by default, meaning you'll need a way to charge your Shrinking Device before you can use it. The scale range goes from 0.21x (about a fifth of normal size) all the way up to 10.0x, both of which are adjustable in the config. Your shrink state persists through death, respawning, and dimension changes, so you won't snap back to normal size unexpectedly.
Getting Started
- 1
Craft the Shrinking Device
You'll need 6 Iron Ingots, 1 Ender Pearl, 1 Glass block, and 1 Stone Button. The Ender Pearl goes in the top center, Glass in the middle, and the Stone Button at the bottom center, with Iron Ingots filling every other slot. This means you'll need to have visited the End or traded with Villagers for the Ender Pearl before getting started.
- 2
Charge the Device
By default, the Shrinking Device requires Forge Energy (FE) to operate. It has a capacity of 100,000 FE and costs 5,000 FE per use. Place it in any FE-compatible charger from mods like Mekanism, Thermal Expansion, or Industrial Foregoing. The durability bar on the item shows its current charge level. If you're playing without a tech mod, you can disable the power requirement in the config.
- 3
Set Your Desired Scale
Right-click while holding the Shrinking Device (without sneaking) to open the scale GUI. You'll see a preview of your player model and a Pig at the current scale. Use the up and down arrow buttons to adjust the scale in 0.1 increments. The scale ranges from 0.21 (minimum) to 10.0 (maximum). Close the GUI when you're happy with your chosen size.
- 4
Shrink Yourself
Hold the Shrinking Device and sneak-right-click to toggle your shrunk state. Your hitbox, eye height, and visual model will all scale to your chosen size. Sneak-right-click again to return to normal. You can also press the G key (default keybind) while holding the device to toggle shrinking without sneaking.
- 5
Shrink Other Entities
Left-click any living entity with the Shrinking Device to shrink or unshrink it. The entity will scale to whatever size you have set in the GUI. This works on all living entities: passive mobs, hostile mobs, and even other players on a server.
Shrinking Device Recipe

Players in Creative Mode can use the Shrinking Device without any FE charge. The power check is completely bypassed, so you can freely resize entities without worrying about energy.
The Shrinking Device
The Shrinking Device is the core item in this mod and handles everything related to resizing. It's classified as an Epic rarity item and can only be stacked to 1. The device has three distinct functions depending on how you interact with it.
Self-Shrinking
Sneak-right-clicking with the device toggles your own shrunk state. When shrunk, your hitbox and eye height both scale proportionally. At 0.21x scale, you're small enough to walk under Slabs and fit through gaps that would normally be impossible. At scales above 1.0, you become larger than normal, which can be useful for reaching high places or just for fun. Your shrink state is saved to your player data and persists through death, respawning, and traveling between dimensions.
Scale GUI
Right-clicking without sneaking opens the scale adjustment screen. This GUI shows two entity previews: your player on the left and a Pig on the right, both rendered at the current scale. The up and down buttons adjust the scale by 0.1 per click, with the current value displayed between them. The scale you set here applies both to self-shrinking and to any entities you shrink with left-click. Note that you cannot open the GUI while already shrunk.
Entity Shrinking
Left-clicking any living entity with the Shrinking Device applies your current scale setting to that entity and toggles its shrunk state. Hit a shrunken entity again to return it to normal size. This works on every LivingEntity in the game, including mobs from other mods. The shrink state syncs properly in multiplayer, so all players will see the resized entity.
Mob Bottles
The Mob Bottle system lets you capture shrunken entities and carry them in your inventory. To capture a mob, first shrink it using the Shrinking Device, then right-click the shrunken entity while holding a Glass Bottle. The Glass Bottle will be consumed and replaced with a Mob Bottle containing that entity. The Mob Bottle stores the entity's full NBT data, meaning all its properties (health, custom name, equipment, etc.) are preserved.
To release a captured mob, right-click the Mob Bottle on any block surface. The entity will spawn at the clicked location and the Mob Bottle will be replaced with an empty Glass Bottle. A filled Mob Bottle shows an enchantment glint and displays a tooltip showing which entity type it contains. Mob Bottles stack to 1, so each captured entity takes up one inventory slot.
There are a few important restrictions: you cannot capture other players, and the target entity must be alive and not currently riding another entity. This feature can be completely disabled in the config if a server admin doesn't want players bottling mobs.
You can only capture mobs that are already shrunken. Trying to right-click a normal-sized mob with a Glass Bottle will not work. Always shrink the entity first with the Shrinking Device, then capture it with a Glass Bottle.

Configuration
Shrink's config file is found in your Minecraft config folder. Several options let you tailor the mod to your play style or server needs.
The enablePowerRequirements option (default: true) controls whether the Shrinking Device needs FE to function. Set this to false if you're playing a non-tech modpack or just want free resizing. The setPowerUsage option (default: 5,000 FE) controls how much energy each shrink or unshrink costs, while setShrinkingDeviceCapacity (default: 100,000 FE) sets the device's internal battery size.
The maxSize option (default: 10.0) and minSize option (default: 0.21) control the scale range. The minimum cannot go below 0.21 (hardcoded floor). The maximum can be set up to 100.0, though extremely large scales may cause rendering or collision issues. Finally, enableMobBottles (default: true) lets server admins disable the Mob Bottle capture mechanic entirely if it causes balance concerns.
The default keybind for toggling your shrink state is G. You can rebind this in Minecraft's Controls menu under the Shrink category. The keybind only activates when you have a Shrinking Device in your inventory, so it won't conflict with other mods that use the G key.
FAQ
Does the shrink effect persist after death?
Yes. Your shrink state, including whether you're shrunk and your chosen scale, is saved to your player capability data. It persists through death, respawning, dimension changes, and logging out and back in.
Can I shrink other players on a server?
Yes, left-clicking another player with the Shrinking Device will shrink them to your current scale setting. However, you cannot capture players in Mob Bottles. The bottle capture mechanic explicitly excludes PlayerEntity.
Does the Shrinking Device work without a tech mod installed?
By default, the device requires Forge Energy (FE), which means you need a mod that provides FE generation and charging. If you don't have one, set enablePowerRequirements to false in the Shrink config file to use the device without any energy cost.
Can I make entities bigger than normal?
Yes. The scale GUI lets you set values above 1.0, up to 10.0 by default (configurable up to 100.0). Setting a scale of 5.0 and left-clicking a Chicken will give you a Chicken five times its normal size. Be aware that very large scales can cause visual glitches and collision issues.
How do I unshrink a mob I've already shrunk?
Simply left-click the shrunken mob again with the Shrinking Device. This toggles the shrunk state off and returns the entity to its original size.
Does shrinking affect mob AI, damage, or health?
Shrinking only affects the entity's visual model, hitbox, and eye height. AI behavior, health, damage output, and all other stats remain unchanged. A shrunken Zombie is just as dangerous as a full-sized one, just harder to see and hit.
