Wither Skeleton Tweaks Mod Guide: Fragments, Immolation Blades & Faster Wither Farming

Wither Skeleton Tweaks streamlines one of Minecraft's most tedious grinds by guaranteeing Wither Skull Fragment drops, converting all Nether Skeletons into Wither Skeletons, and adding powerful Immolation Blades that instantly behead skeleton mobs. If you want to summon the Wither without hours of skull farming, this mod has you covered.

Overview

Wither Skeleton Tweaks tackles the most frustrating part of vanilla Minecraft progression: farming Wither Skeleton Skulls. In vanilla, Wither Skeletons have a measly 2.5% chance to drop a Skull, meaning you could spend hours in a Nether Fortress before collecting the three Skulls needed to summon the Wither. This mod flips that grind on its head with three key changes.

First, every Wither Skeleton you kill is guaranteed to drop a Wither Skull Fragment, and combining nine Fragments crafts a full Wither Skeleton Skull. Second, all Skeletons that spawn in the Nether are automatically converted into Wither Skeletons, dramatically increasing your farming opportunities. Third, the mod adds two endgame Immolation Blades that instantly behead any skeleton-type mob, bypassing the Fragment system entirely and dropping full Skulls on every kill.

The mod also cleans up skeleton drop tables by removing damaged Stone Swords and Bows, keeping your inventory free of junk. You can browse all items the mod adds using the Items tab above.

Getting Started

  1. 1

    Head to the Nether

Travel to the Nether as you normally would. Every Skeleton that spawns here is now automatically converted into a Wither Skeleton, including those in Soul Sand Valleys and other biomes. You no longer need to hunt specifically in Nether Fortresses, though Fortresses still offer the highest spawn density.

  2. 2

    Farm Wither Skull Fragments

Kill Wither Skeletons with any weapon. Each one is guaranteed to drop a Wither Skull Fragment (unless it drops a full Skull instead). The Fragment looks like a small dark shard and stacks normally in your inventory. Collect as many as you can.

  3. 3

    Craft Wither Skeleton Skulls

Place nine Wither Skull Fragments in a Crafting Table (filling all nine slots) to create one Wither Skeleton Skull. Since Fragment drops are guaranteed, you need exactly 27 Wither Skeleton kills to craft three Skulls and summon the Wither. This is far more reliable than vanilla's random 2.5% drop rate.

  4. 4

    Summon and Defeat the Wither

Build the Wither using four blocks of Soul Sand and your three Wither Skeleton Skulls, just like vanilla. Defeat it to collect Nether Stars, which you will need for the next step.

  5. 5

    Craft an Immolation Blade

Once you have two Nether Stars from Wither kills, craft an Immolation Blade or Blazing Immolation Blade. These weapons instantly kill and behead any skeleton-type mob, making all future Skull farming trivial. One swing, one guaranteed Skull.

No More Junk Drops

By default, damaged Stone Swords and Bows are removed from all skeleton-type mob drop tables (Wither Skeletons, Skeletons, and Strays). This means your inventory stays clean while farming. If you want those drops back, set "delswords" to false in the config.

Wither Skull Fragments

The Wither Skull Fragment is the core item this mod adds. Whenever you kill a Wither Skeleton and it does not drop a full Wither Skeleton Skull, it will instead drop a Fragment. By default, this drop has a 100% chance (configurable via the "fragchance" setting). Nine Fragments combine in a shapeless recipe to produce one Wither Skeleton Skull.

This system completely eliminates the randomness of vanilla Skull farming. Instead of relying on a 2.5% drop chance boosted only by Looting enchantments, you now have a deterministic path: kill 9 Wither Skeletons, get 1 Skull. Kill 27, get 3 Skulls and summon the Wither. The number of Fragments required per Skull can be adjusted in the config from 1 to 9.

Skeleton Conversion

One of the most impactful changes this mod makes is converting all Skeletons that spawn in the Nether into Wither Skeletons. In vanilla, Wither Skeletons only spawn in Nether Fortresses. With this mod active, every Skeleton spawn across the entire Nether dimension produces a Wither Skeleton instead. This includes spawns in Soul Sand Valleys, Nether Wastes, Basalt Deltas, and all other Nether biomes.

Converted Skeletons retain their original weapon behavior when the "givebows" config option is enabled (which it is by default). This means you will encounter bow-wielding Wither Skeletons throughout the Nether, particularly in Soul Sand Valleys where Skeletons normally spawn with Bows. These ranged Wither Skeletons deal the same Wither effect on hit as their melee counterparts, so stay alert.

Overworld Wither Skeletons

The config includes an "allowAllBiomes" option (disabled by default) that lets Skeletons in any dimension convert into Wither Skeletons when spawning in light level 8 or below. Enabling this can dramatically increase your encounters with Wither Skeletons but also makes nighttime significantly more dangerous. The "allbiomechance" setting controls the probability of conversion outside the Nether.

Immolation Blades

The mod adds two powerful endgame swords: the Immolation Blade and the Blazing Immolation Blade. Both are functionally identical in stats and behavior, differing only in their crafting recipe and texture. They represent the final tier of this mod's progression, designed for players who have already defeated the Wither at least twice.

Stats

Both blades share the custom IMMOLATION item tier with impressive numbers. They have 12.0 attack damage, 4096 durability (more than double Netherite's 2031), and 30 enchantability (higher than Gold's 25, making them excellent candidates for enchanting). The attack speed modifier is -1.0, meaning they swing faster than standard swords which use -2.4. They are repaired on an Anvil using Nether Stars.

Special Effect: Instant Beheading

The defining feature of both Immolation Blades is their effect on skeleton-type mobs. When you hit any mob that extends AbstractSkeleton (Wither Skeletons, Skeletons, and Strays), the blade sets them ablaze for 150 ticks, forces their health to 1.0, then deals 150 fireworks damage, guaranteeing an instant kill. The mob is also launched into the air with random velocity for a dramatic visual effect. Against Wither Skeletons specifically, this guarantees a full Wither Skeleton Skull drop on every single kill, bypassing the Fragment system entirely.

Against non-skeleton mobs, the blade still sets the target on fire for 150 ticks and deals its full 12.0 attack damage, making it a formidable general-purpose weapon even outside of Skull farming.

Crafting the Immolation Blade

The Immolation Blade is crafted in a 3x3 grid using a Stick, two Nether Stars, and four Lava Buckets. Place the first Nether Star in the top-right corner, the second in the center, a Stick in the bottom-left, and fill the remaining four slots with Lava Buckets.

Crafting the Blazing Immolation Blade

The Blazing Immolation Blade uses the same pattern but substitutes four Blaze Rods for the Lava Buckets. Place a Nether Star in the top-right and center, a Stick in the bottom-left, and Blaze Rods in the remaining four positions. Since Blaze Rods are generally easier to stockpile than Lava Buckets, this variant is often the more convenient choice.

With 30 enchantability, the Immolation Blades have the highest enchantability of any sword in the game (higher than Gold at 25). This makes them exceptionally likely to receive high-level enchantments like Sharpness V, Looting III, and Fire Aspect II from an Enchanting Table.

Configuration Options

Wither Skeleton Tweaks provides six server-side configuration options in its common config file. These let you fine-tune the mod's behavior from a barely-noticeable quality-of-life tweak to a dramatic overhaul of skeleton spawning across all dimensions.

Config Settings

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Wither Skeletons do I need to kill to summon the Wither?

With default settings, you need 27 Wither Skeleton kills to collect 27 Fragments, which craft into 3 Wither Skeleton Skulls. This assumes none of them drop a full Skull directly (which can still happen via vanilla mechanics or Looting), so the actual number is often lower. If you have an Immolation Blade, you only need 3 kills for 3 guaranteed Skulls.

Do Wither Skeletons still spawn in Nether Fortresses?

Yes, all vanilla Wither Skeleton spawns in Nether Fortresses are unaffected. The mod adds additional Wither Skeletons by converting every Skeleton spawn across the entire Nether. Fortresses still have the highest density, but you can now farm effectively in any Nether biome.

Does the Immolation Blade work on the Wither boss?

The instant beheading effect only triggers on mobs that extend AbstractSkeleton, which includes Wither Skeletons, Skeletons, and Strays. The Wither boss is a separate entity type and is not affected by the instant kill. However, the blade's 12.0 attack damage and fire effect still make it a solid weapon against the Wither.

Is there any difference between the Immolation Blade and the Blazing Immolation Blade?

No functional difference whatsoever. Both blades share identical stats (12.0 attack damage, 4096 durability, 30 enchantability, -1.0 attack speed modifier) and the same instant beheading effect. The only differences are the crafting recipe (Lava Buckets vs Blaze Rods) and the texture. Pick whichever materials are easier for you to obtain.

Can I use this mod alongside Looting enchantments?

Yes. The mod's Fragment drops and the Immolation Blade's beheading effect work independently of Looting. Looting still increases your chance of getting a full Skull from the vanilla drop table. If a Wither Skeleton drops a full Skull via Looting, it will not also drop a Fragment, so the two systems complement each other without stacking excessively.

Does this mod require Placebo?

Yes, Wither Skeleton Tweaks depends on the Placebo library mod. The mod uses Placebo's ItemTier and RecipeHelper utilities. Make sure you have the correct version of Placebo installed for your Minecraft version, or Forge will alert you at startup.
