YUNG's Bridges Mod Guide: Naturally Generated River Crossings
YUNG's Bridges adds beautifully crafted stone and wood bridges that generate naturally across rivers throughout your Minecraft world. Each bridge adapts its materials to match the surrounding biome, features realistic weathering and decay, and extends dynamic support pillars down to meet the terrain below.
Overview
YUNG's Bridges is a world generation mod that adds naturally spawning bridges across Rivers in your Minecraft world. Once installed, you don't need to do anything; bridges simply appear as part of terrain generation wherever the mod finds a suitable river crossing with solid ground on both sides.
The mod includes two main categories of bridges: sturdy Stone bridges built from Stone Bricks and Cobblestone, and rustic Wood bridges constructed from Logs, Planks, and Fences. Every bridge adapts its materials to match the surrounding biome, so a bridge in a Taiga uses Spruce wood while one in a Jungle uses Jungle wood. Many bridges also feature "broken" variants with missing sections and weathered blocks, giving the impression of ancient structures that have stood for centuries.
This mod requires YUNG's API as a dependency. Make sure you have it installed before adding YUNG's Bridges to your mod folder.
Getting Started
- 1
Install YUNG's API
YUNG's Bridges requires YUNG's API as a dependency. Download the correct version of YUNG's API for your mod loader (Forge, NeoForge, or Fabric) and Minecraft version, then place it in your mods folder alongside YUNG's Bridges.
- 2
Generate a New World or Explore New Chunks
Bridges only generate in newly created chunks. If you add this mod to an existing world, you will need to travel to areas you haven't explored yet. Bridges will not retroactively appear in chunks that were already generated.
- 3
Find a River Biome
Bridges spawn exclusively in River biomes. Head toward any river crossing and keep an eye out for stone arches or wooden walkways spanning the water. Not every river will have a bridge; the mod checks each chunk for suitable conditions, including solid ground on both banks and open water in between.
- 4
Walk Across and Enjoy
These bridges are fully functional, constructed from standard vanilla blocks. You can walk across them, build on them, or harvest their materials. Broken bridge variants may have gaps, so watch your step when crossing those.
Like all world generation mods, YUNG's Bridges only affects newly generated chunks. Adding it to an existing world is perfectly safe, but you will only find bridges in areas you explore for the first time after installation.
Stone Bridges
Stone bridges are the larger, more imposing structures you will encounter. They are built primarily from Stone Bricks, Cobblestone, Polished Andesite, and Stone Brick Walls, with wooden elements like Logs, Planks, Slabs, and Fences used for railings and decorative accents. Stone bridges come in five different size templates spanning 15, 16, 22, 24, and 31 blocks in length, all with a width of 5 blocks.
The largest stone bridge at 31 blocks long is a particularly impressive sight, featuring arched supports and requiring 3 solid blocks on each bank for anchoring instead of the usual 2. Each size template has both an intact version and a broken variant, where sections of the bridge have crumbled away. The broken variants add visual character and make the world feel lived-in, though they can leave gaps in the walkway.
Weathering Effects
Stone bridges are not uniform in appearance. The mod replaces Stone Bricks with Mossy Stone Bricks (50% chance) or Cracked Stone Bricks (25% chance), giving each bridge a unique aged look. Cobblestone blocks have a 60% chance of becoming Mossy Cobblestone. Stone Brick Slabs, Walls, and Stairs similarly have a 50% chance of becoming their mossy variants. This randomization means no two bridges look exactly alike.
Wood Bridges
Wood bridges have a simpler, more rustic appearance compared to their stone counterparts. They come in two size templates: a 17-block-long bridge with a width of 4 blocks, and a larger 27-block-long bridge with a width of 5 blocks. These bridges are constructed entirely from wooden materials, including Logs, Planks, Slabs, Stairs, and Fences.
Like stone bridges, each wood bridge template has both intact and broken variants. The 17-block bridge is the most common small crossing you will find, while the 27-block variant makes for a dramatic river crossing with its extended walkway. Fences along the edges serve as railings, though the mod randomly removes about 25% of them (when there is no block above) to create a weathered appearance. Lanterns attached to bridges have a 50% chance of being removed entirely, and torches receive the same treatment.
Broken bridge variants can have missing sections in the walkway. If you are carrying valuable items or leading animals across a river, check the bridge for gaps first. Falling into the river is usually harmless, but it can sweep you downstream.
Biome Adaptation
One of the mod's best features is how bridges adapt their wood type to match the biome they generate in. The mod defines four special biome groups, and any biome that does not fall into these groups defaults to Oak wood.
Wood Type by Biome
| Default (Plains, Forest, etc.) | Taiga | Jungle | Badlands | Savanna | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Logs | Oak Log | Spruce Log | Jungle Log | Dark Oak Log | Acacia Log |
| Planks | Oak Planks | Spruce Planks | Jungle Planks | Dark Oak Planks | Acacia Planks |
| Slabs | Oak Slab | Spruce Slab | Jungle Slab | Dark Oak Slab | Acacia Slab |
| Stairs | Oak Stairs | Spruce Stairs | Jungle Stairs | Dark Oak Stairs | Acacia Stairs |
| Fences | Oak Fence | Spruce Fence | Jungle Fence | Dark Oak Fence | Acacia Fence |
How Bridge Placement Works
Understanding how the mod chooses where to place bridges can help you predict where to find them. Bridges only generate in River biomes, and the placement system checks several conditions before spawning a bridge. Both ends of the bridge must rest on solid ground at or just above sea level. The area between the two banks must be filled with Water. The banks must also have enough solid blocks laterally (perpendicular to the bridge) to provide a stable anchoring point.
The mod attempts to place one bridge per chunk that qualifies. It randomly selects from all available bridge templates (both stone and wood, intact and broken), trying each one until it finds a valid placement or runs out of options. Each individual bridge template also has a 1-in-3 rarity filter, so even when conditions are perfect, there is still a chance no bridge appears. This keeps bridges feeling like pleasant surprises rather than guaranteed fixtures at every river crossing.
Dynamic Support Pillars
All bridges feature dynamic support legs that extend downward from the bridge structure until they hit solid ground or the bottom of the water. These legs are not just simple columns. Log-type legs use the biome-appropriate wood type, while stone legs randomly mix Stone Bricks, Mossy Stone Bricks, Cracked Stone Bricks, Cobblestone, Mossy Cobblestone, and Polished Andesite. This means bridge supports look natural and varied regardless of how deep the water is beneath them.
Bridge Templates at a Glance
| Stone Bridge Sizes | 15, 16, 22, 24, 31 blocks long |
| Wood Bridge Sizes | 17, 27 blocks long |
| Bridge Width | 4-5 blocks |
| Total Unique Templates | 14 (7 base designs x 2 intact/broken) |
| Total Placeable Variants | 22 (each template + rotated version) |
| Spawn Biome | Rivers only |
| Rarity Filter | 1 in 3 chance per template attempt |
Rivers that cut through narrow land masses or have frequent bends tend to produce more bridges because each chunk along the river gets its own placement attempt. Long, straight rivers through open Plains are your best bet for spotting bridges from a distance.
Mod Compatibility
YUNG's Bridges includes built-in compatibility with several popular biome mods. The biome adaptation system recognizes biomes from Terralith, Biomes O' Plenty, Oh The Biomes You'll Go (BYG), and Project Vibrant Journeys. Terralith biomes like Cloud Forest, Lavender Valley, and Moonlight Grove are mapped to the Taiga wood group (Spruce), while Sakura Grove and Hot Shrubland use Savanna wood (Acacia). BYG's Autumnal Taiga and Maple Taiga also use Spruce, and Biomes O' Plenty's Mediterranean Taiga and Dead Forest biomes are included as well.
All of these compatibility entries are marked as optional, meaning the mod works perfectly fine without any of these biome mods installed. If you do have them, bridges in those modded biomes will use the appropriate wood type instead of defaulting to Oak. The mod also pairs naturally with other YUNG's mods like YUNG's Better Dungeons, YUNG's Better Mineshafts, and YUNG's Better Strongholds for a comprehensive world generation overhaul.
Customization with Data Packs
Since YUNG's Bridges uses the vanilla world generation system (configured features and placed features defined in JSON), you can customize it through data packs. The bridge placement is controlled by the yungsbridges:bridge_list placed feature, and each individual bridge variant is a separate configured feature under yungsbridges:bridge/stone/ and yungsbridges:bridge/wood/ namespaces.
You can control which biomes receive bridges by modifying the biome tag at yungsbridges:has_structure/bridge. By default this includes all River biomes. You can also add your own biomes to the wood-type groups (badlands, taiga, jungle, savanna) by adding entries to the corresponding tags under yungsbridges:collections/. This allows modded biomes that the mod does not natively support to still get the correct wood type on their bridges.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will bridges appear in my existing world?
Bridges will only appear in newly generated chunks. Any areas you have already explored will remain unchanged. You need to travel to unexplored territory to find bridges. Starting a new world is the easiest way to see them, but adding the mod to an existing save is completely safe.
Why am I not finding any bridges?
Bridges only generate in River biomes and require specific conditions: solid ground on both banks at sea level, Water filling the space between, and enough lateral solid blocks for anchoring. Each bridge template also has a 1-in-3 rarity filter. Try exploring longer stretches of river, and make sure you are in newly generated chunks.
Does YUNG's Bridges work with Terralith, Biomes O' Plenty, or BYG?
Yes. The mod includes built-in biome tags for Terralith, Biomes O' Plenty, Oh The Biomes You'll Go, and Project Vibrant Journeys. Bridges in modded biomes will automatically use the correct wood type. These compatibility entries are optional, so the mod works with or without any of these biome mods installed.
Can I remove the mod safely from a world?
Yes. Since bridges are built entirely from vanilla blocks (Stone Bricks, Oak Planks, Spruce Logs, etc.), removing the mod will not cause any issues. Existing bridges will remain in the world as normal vanilla block structures. No new bridges will generate, but nothing will break.
Do bridges generate in the Nether or the End?
No. Bridges are restricted to the Overworld and only generate in biomes tagged as Rivers. They will not appear in the Nether, the End, or any other dimension.
Can I control which biomes get bridges or change the wood types?
Yes, through data packs. You can modify the biome tag at yungsbridges:has_structure/bridge to control where bridges spawn, and add biomes to the wood-type collection tags (yungsbridges:collections/taiga, jungle, badlands, savanna) to control which wood type is used. Any biome not in a specific collection defaults to Oak.
