YUNG's Extras Mod Guide: Desert Wells, Obelisks & Swamp Ruins

YUNG's Extras fills Deserts and Swamps with dozens of handcrafted structures that feel like they belong in vanilla Minecraft. From redesigned Desert Wells with Suspicious Sand to atmospheric Swamp Churches lit by candles, this mod transforms two of the game's emptiest biomes into places worth exploring.

Overview

YUNG's Extras is a vanilla+ structure mod that adds over 50 new structure variants across Desert and Swamp biomes. Unlike mods that introduce new blocks or items, YUNG's Extras works entirely with vanilla blocks to create structures that blend seamlessly into a normal Minecraft world. The mod replaces the vanilla Desert Well with a much-improved system of wells and adds entirely new structure types to both Deserts and Swamps.

In Deserts, you'll find three types of redesigned wells (standard, dry, and wishing), Sandstone Obelisks, Giant Torches, small ruins with loot, and relaxation spots called Chillzones. In Swamps, the mod scatters Stone Brick arches, double arches, pillars, cubbies, a rare church, and even an ogre statue throughout the landscape. Every structure uses randomized block variants (Mossy Stone Bricks, Cracked Stone Bricks, randomly colored Candles) so no two feel exactly the same.

This mod is part of YUNG's suite of world generation mods and requires YUNG's API as a dependency. It works alongside other YUNG mods like YUNG's Better Dungeons and YUNG's Better Mineshafts without conflicts.

Getting Started

  1. 1

    Install YUNG's API

YUNG's Extras requires YUNG's API as a dependency. Make sure you have the correct version of YUNG's API installed for your mod loader (Forge, NeoForge, or Fabric) and Minecraft version before launching.

  2. 2

Generate a new world or explore new chunks

All structures from YUNG's Extras are generated during world creation. If you add the mod to an existing world, you'll need to travel to chunks you haven't explored yet to find the new structures. Previously generated chunks won't be affected.

  3. 3

    Head to a Desert biome

The majority of the mod's content is in Desert biomes. Look for redesigned wells, tall Obelisks on the horizon, Giant Torches, and small ruins with Chests. The vanilla Desert Well has been replaced entirely, so every well you find will be one of YUNG's new designs.

  4. 4

Explore Swamp biomes for Stone Brick ruins

Swamp biomes (including Mangrove Swamps) now contain scattered Stone Brick structures: arches, double arches, pillars, cubbies, and the rare Swamp Church. These features use randomized mossy and cracked variants for an aged, atmospheric feel.

  5. 5

    Bring a Brush for archaeology

The redesigned Desert Wells contain Suspicious Sand with archaeology loot, including Diamonds, Emeralds, and Gold Ingots. Craft a Brush before heading out and look for Suspicious Sand blocks embedded in the well structures.

Desert Structures

The Desert biome receives the most attention from YUNG's Extras, with six distinct structure categories totaling 16 individual placed features. All Desert structures spawn only on Sand and perform stability checks to ensure they don't generate over caves or floating in the air. The mod also removes the vanilla Desert Well entirely and replaces it with its own improved well system.

Desert Wells

The vanilla Desert Well is gone, replaced by nine well variants across three types and three sizes. Standard Wells come in small (radius 1), medium (radius 2), and large (radius 3) sizes. They look like enhanced versions of the original well, built from Sandstone with Water inside. Each has a 1-in-1200 chance of generating per chunk.

Dry Wells are the same three sizes but contain no Water, representing wells that have dried up over time. They share the 1-in-1200 rarity with standard wells. Wishing Wells also come in three sizes and are visually distinct, designed to look like places where travelers once tossed coins. They are equally rare at 1-in-1200 per chunk.

All wells contain Suspicious Sand that can be brushed for archaeology loot. The mod guarantees at least 2 Suspicious Sand blocks per well, with up to 4 possible. Standard archaeology drops use the vanilla Desert Well loot table. Additionally, wells include extra Suspicious Sand blocks (2-4 more) with a special loot table that drops Diamonds, Emeralds, or Gold Ingots, making these wells significantly more rewarding than the original.

Archaeology Bonus Loot

YUNG's wells contain two types of Suspicious Sand. Some use the vanilla Desert Well archaeology table, but others pull from a special bonus table that only drops Diamonds, Emeralds, and Gold Ingots. Always brush every Suspicious Sand block you find in these wells.

Desert Obelisks

Obelisks are tall Sandstone pillars that rise above the Desert landscape, serving as visible landmarks you can spot from a distance. The mod includes four Obelisk variants. The Standard Obelisk and Creeper Obelisk (featuring a Creeper face design) each have a 1-in-700 spawn chance, making them among the most common structures the mod adds. The Ruined Obelisk appears partially destroyed and shares the same 1-in-700 rarity.

The Rare Obelisk is a special variant with a much lower 1-in-3000 spawn chance. Keep an eye out for this one, as it features a unique design that distinguishes it from the common variants. Obelisks are purely decorative and don't contain loot, but they make excellent navigation landmarks in the otherwise featureless Desert.

Giant Torches

Giant Torches are oversized torch structures made from Sandstone that tower above the Desert. With a 1-in-700 spawn rate, they're one of the more common Desert structures. They serve as visual landmarks and light sources, making them useful reference points when navigating at night.

Desert Ruins

Small Desert Ruins are crumbling structures that contain a Chest with loot. Each ruin has a 1-in-1000 chance of generating per chunk. The loot table rolls 4-6 items from a pool that includes Sand (weight 3, 1-5 per roll), Gold Ingots (weight 1, 1-4 per roll), Wheat (weight 1, 2-5 per roll), and single Emeralds (weight 1). While none of this loot is game-changing, free Gold Ingots and Emeralds early on can be a nice boost.

Chillzones

Chillzones are small relaxation spots that generate in Deserts with a 1-in-1000 rarity. These cozy little structures contain a Chest with a unique loot table: 4-6 rolls of either Water Bottles (weight 3) or Cookies (weight 1, 1-4 per roll). They're a fun thematic touch, as if a previous traveler set up a rest stop in the Desert.

Swamp Structures

Swamp biomes and Mangrove Swamps receive a collection of atmospheric Stone Brick structures that give the impression of an ancient civilization lost to the marshes. The mod registers over 45 individual structure variants across five categories. All Swamp structures use a processor that randomly substitutes Stone Bricks with Mossy Stone Bricks (45% chance) or Cracked Stone Bricks (45% chance), and Stone Brick Stairs with Mossy Stone Brick Stairs (60% chance). This makes every structure feel weathered and unique.

Arches and Double Arches

Stone Brick Arches are the most numerous structures in Swamps, with 11 single arch variants and 22 double arch variants. Single arches have a 1-in-2400 spawn rate per variant, while double arches share the same rarity. With so many variants registered, you'll encounter arches relatively frequently while exploring. They range from simple curved archways to more elaborate constructions, and their legs extend downward through air and water to anchor into solid ground.

Pillars

Three pillar variants generate throughout Swamps at a 1-in-1400 rate each. These standalone Stone Brick columns rise up from the murky water, suggesting the remains of old structures whose walls have long since crumbled away. Like other Swamp structures, their blocks are randomly aged with mossy and cracked variants.

Cubbies

Eight cubby variants appear in Swamps at a 1-in-2000 rate each. Cubbies are small enclosed Stone Brick alcoves, like tiny shelters or storage nooks left behind by the Swamp's former inhabitants. They're easy to overlook if you're not paying attention, partially hidden among the trees and Lily Pads.

Randomized Block Aging

Every Swamp structure uses a processor that gives each Stone Brick block a 45% chance to become Mossy Stone Bricks and a 45% chance to become Cracked Stone Bricks. Stone Brick Stairs have a 60% chance to become Mossy Stone Brick Stairs. This means the same structure template looks different every time it generates.

Swamp Church

The Swamp Church is the largest and rarest Swamp structure, with a 1-in-3000 spawn chance. It's a sizable Stone Brick building with a footprint of roughly 13 by 5 blocks. The church features randomly placed Candles in various colors (White, Gray, Light Gray, Brown, Green, Purple, Black, or uncolored) with random counts of 1-4 Candles per placement. Each Candle has only a 10% chance of being lit, giving most churches a dimly atmospheric feel with just a few flickering lights.

Swamp Ogre

The Swamp Ogre is a decorative statue built from Stone Bricks, also spawning at a 1-in-3000 rate. It's a fun easter egg of sorts, resembling an ogre or troll figure rising from the Swamp. Like all other Swamp structures, its blocks are randomly aged for a weathered appearance.

Loot Tables

YUNG's Extras adds loot to two structure types. Desert Ruins contain Chests that roll 4-6 items from Sand, Gold Ingots, Wheat, and Emeralds. Chillzones contain Chests with 4-6 rolls of Water Bottles and Cookies. The redesigned Desert Wells don't have Chests, but their Suspicious Sand blocks can be brushed for archaeology rewards. The standard Suspicious Sand uses vanilla Desert Well archaeology loot, while bonus Suspicious Sand blocks pull from a special table with Diamond, Emerald, and Gold Ingot drops.

Swamp structures are purely decorative and don't contain any loot. They exist to add atmosphere and a sense of ancient history to the biome.

Vanilla Desert Wells Are Removed

This mod completely removes the vanilla Desert Well from world generation and replaces it with its own well system. If you rely on vanilla Desert Wells for any reason (such as other mods that interact with them), be aware they will no longer generate.

Mod Compatibility

YUNG's Extras has built-in compatibility with several biome mods. For Desert structures, it supports biomes tagged as deserts through Forge and common convention tags, plus specific support for Terralith's Lush Desert, Biomes O' Plenty's Lush Desert, and Project Vibrant Journeys' Desert Shrubland and Verdant Sands biomes. Swamp structures generate in both vanilla Swamp and Mangrove Swamp biomes, as well as any biome tagged as a swamp by Forge or common convention tags.

This mod pairs perfectly with other YUNG mods. YUNG's Better Desert Temples, YUNG's Better Dungeons, and YUNG's Better Mineshafts all complement the structures added here without any overlap or conflict.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does YUNG's Extras work on existing worlds?

Yes, but only in newly generated chunks. Any Desert or Swamp chunks you've already explored will remain unchanged. You'll need to travel to unexplored areas to find the new structures.

What happened to the vanilla Desert Well?

YUNG's Extras removes the vanilla Desert Well from generation entirely and replaces it with nine new well variants (three types in three sizes). The new wells are more detailed and contain Suspicious Sand with archaeology loot, including a bonus loot table with Diamonds, Emeralds, and Gold.

Does YUNG's Extras add any new items or blocks?

No. The mod is entirely vanilla+ and uses only existing Minecraft blocks. All structures are built from blocks like Sandstone, Stone Bricks, Mossy Stone Bricks, Candles, and other vanilla materials. This is what makes the structures blend so naturally into the world.

Does YUNG's Extras work with Terralith or Biomes O' Plenty?

Yes. The mod has built-in support for desert biomes from Terralith (Lush Desert), Biomes O' Plenty (Lush Desert), and Project Vibrant Journeys (Desert Shrubland, Verdant Sands). It also uses Forge and common convention biome tags, so most biome mods that properly tag their swamp and desert biomes will work automatically.

How rare is the Swamp Church?

The Swamp Church has a 1-in-3000 chance of generating per chunk, making it one of the rarest structures in the mod. The Swamp Ogre and Rare Desert Obelisk share the same 1-in-3000 rarity. By comparison, the most common structures (Obelisks and Giant Torches) have a 1-in-700 chance.

Can I configure which structures spawn?

The mod uses standard Minecraft datapack-based worldgen configuration. You can create a custom datapack to modify spawn rates (the rarity_filter chance values) or disable specific structures entirely by overriding the placed_feature JSON files. No in-game config menu is provided.
