The Graveyard Mod Guide: Structures, Mobs, Boss Fight & Ghouling Companion

The Graveyard transforms Minecraft's overworld into a haunted landscape filled with eerie structures, hostile undead, and one of the most elaborate boss fights in any exploration mod. From small roadside graves to sprawling crypts buried underground, every structure tells a story. At the center of it all is the Corrupted Champion — a three-phase lich boss that requires careful preparation and nerves of steel to defeat.

Overview

The Graveyard adds a full suite of themed content centered around death, corruptioncorruption, and the undead. The mod introduces eleven structure types, eight hostile mobs, one summoned companion, a multi-phase boss, a new crafting material, and dozens of decorative blocks. You can explore all items and recipes using the Items and Recipes tabs above.

Progression through the mod follows a natural path: find graves and graveyards for early loot and CorruptionCorruption, work through medium and large graveyards for better gear, then hunt down the three Ominous Bone Staff Fragments to unlock the Corrupted Champion boss fight. Defeating the boss rewards you with a Bone Staff that lets you summon a loyal Ghouling companion.

The mod includes a detailed config file at .minecraft/config/graveyard that lets you adjust structure frequency, mob spawn weights, boss stats, and the Horde event. Nearly every feature can be tuned or disabled.

Getting Started

    Collect Corruption from Early Graves

    Small Graves generate frequently while exploring forests, plains, and deserts. Right-click the Coffins buried beneath each gravestone to open them like chests. Ghouls, Revenants, and Skeleton Creepers will drop CorruptionCorruption when killed. Collect as much Corruption as you can — it is the mod's core crafting material.

    Craft Dark Iron Ingots

    Combine one CorruptionCorruption with one Iron Ingot in a Crafting Table to produce a Dark Iron IngotDark Iron Ingot. This material is used for everything from Coffin hinges to Dark Iron BarsDark Iron Bars, Doors, and Trapdoors. Stocking up on Dark Iron Ingots early opens most of the mod's crafting recipes.

    Find a Medium or Large Graveyard

    Medium and Large Graveyards are the best early-game loot sources. They contain Coffins, Sarcophagi, Urns, and hidden chests. Sarcophagi consistently yield better loot than regular Coffins — always prioritize them. Bring torches and armor: Ghouls and Revenants spawn directly inside these structures.

    Locate the Ruins and Collect Staff Fragments

    Three Ruins variants spawn in forest biomes: a Broken Tower, a Bloody Hill, and a Campsite. Each contains one of the three Ominous Bone Staff Fragments (upper, middle, and lower). If you cannot find all three Ruins, the Nameless Hanged NPC at the Dead Tree structure sells each fragment for 64 CorruptionCorruption.

    Prepare for the Boss Fight

    Before summoning the Corrupted Champion, craft or loot a Bone DaggerBone Dagger from an Acolyte. Hold a Glass Bottle in your offhand and kill Villagers with the Bone Dagger until you fill a Vial of BloodVial of Blood. Find the Lich Prison — a floating island above oceans — and wait for nighttime before beginning the ritual.

Structures

The Graveyard adds eleven structure types, ranging from single graves to massive underground labyrinths. Each structure contains Coffins and Sarcophagi that function as chests, and many hold hidden secrets, lore books, and rare loot. Sarcophagi always yield better loot than Coffins — make a habit of checking them first.

Small Graves

The most common structure in the mod. Small Graves appear in five biome-specific variants: plains, forest, mushroom island, desert, savanna, and mountain. They range from a single gravestone with a buried Coffin to multi-block arrangements with Sarcophagi and CeramicsCeramics blocks. Mountain variants can contain Amethyst nodes. Break Ceramics blocks to collect seeds, minerals, or mob drops.

Small Graveyard

A small cemetery with multiple Graves, Coffins, a chest, an anvil, and a mob spawner. It generates in two layouts — rectangle and L-shape. The L-shaped variant also contains CeramicsCeramics and Urns, with one Urn hidden inside a tree that holds decent treasure. Seven biome variants exist. This structure is uncommon but not rare.

Desert Graveyard

A desert-only variant of the small graveyard built from Sandstone. Slightly larger than the standard version with two Husk spawners below the surface, buried Coffins requiring one block of digging to access, a SarcophagusSarcophagus, Urns, and a Lodestone. Only spawns in Desert biomes, making it harder to find than its forest equivalent.

Medium Graveyard

A significant structure that comes in two layouts. The brick-walled variant surrounds a Minecraft temple with many Graves, CeramicsCeramics, chests, and a lore book at the entrance — read it for disturbing story context. The second layout includes a village church with a mausoleum, Wither Roses, and a Wither Skeleton Skull. Both variants spawn Ghouls and Revenants directly at the site.

Large Graveyard

The most expansive graveyard structure, generating in taiga and snowy taiga biomes as a jigsaw structure — no two are identical. Large Graveyards contain skeleton and zombie spawners hidden beneath large Graves, a working Guillotine, flower beds, a Wither Skeleton Mill filled with spawners and loot, and a campsite. One variant includes a basement section accessible via stairs with a Wither Skeleton spawner and extra loot. Glazed Urns hidden in moss piles and ponds often contain valuable items.

Haunted House

A multi-story house that is one of the best loot structures in the mod. The second floor has a bedroom with a hidden lever behind an armor stand that reveals a chest. A second hidden chest sits beneath the stairs to the balcony. The attic contains an Acolyte spawner and more treasure. The basement holds additional loot and spawners with imprisoned Villagers. Expect heavy Acolyte resistance throughout.

The Crypt

The most dangerous and rewarding structure in the mod. The Crypt is a massive, procedurally generated underground labyrinth found in Dripstone Caves and Lush Caves biomes. It contains Corrupted Pillager, Corrupted Vindicator, and Acolyte spawners, a library with Amethyst, a smeltery room, an arena with four spawners, and an End Crystal in the central hall. Most importantly, every Coffin and SarcophagusSarcophagus in the Crypt has a 20% chance to spawn a Wraith when opened.

Ruins, Dead Tree, and Other Structures

Ruins spawn in three variants in forest biomes, each containing one Ominous Bone Staff FragmentOminous Bone Staff Fragment and a lore book. The Dead Tree structure spawns in dark forests and swamps — climb it to find hidden Urns with Diamonds and Enchanted Books. The Nameless Hanged NPC here trades staff fragments for 64 CorruptionCorruption each, but only trades at night. The Lich Prison is a large floating island above frozen and deep oceans — look skyward when sailing. The AltarAltar structure in snowy plains and ice spikes biomes contains Dark Iron blocks and skeleton decorations. The Memorial Tree, Giant Mushroom, and Mushroom Grave are smaller structures worth looting for their hidden Urns.

💡Hidden Loot in Structures

Always check inside trees in graveyard structures — Urns are frequently hidden in tree trunks or near the top, holding some of the best non-boss loot in the mod. In Large Graveyards, also check moss piles and pond floors for buried Glazed Urns.

Mobs

The Graveyard adds eight hostile mobs and two passive ones. Four hostile mobs spawn naturally in the world; the rest are confined to specific structures or spawned via events. Each mob has configurable spawn behavior in the config file.

Ghoul

The Ghoul is a deformed undead that comes in eight color variants. It is fast and will roar when aggro'd, alerting nearby Horde mobs within 45 blocks to its target. The Ghoul slows itself slightly during its rage animation but compensates by alerting the whole graveyard. Expect multiple Ghouls to pile on once one spots you.

Nightmare

The most dangerous naturally-spawning mob. The Nightmare is immune to projectiles and water, and will teleport behind you when looked at, inflicting 4 seconds of Blindness. Despite dealing 10 damage per hit (5 hearts), it is slow — kite it from a distance using a sword or axe rather than engaging in close quarters. It will lose interest if the player moves far enough away.

Skeleton Creeper

Faster than a normal Creeper, and its explosion does not destroy blocks — instead it blinds all nearby players for 5 seconds. Its explosion deals 40+ damage at point-blank range, more than a standard Creeper. Treat it like a priority target in group encounters; getting blinded mid-fight with Ghouls around is dangerous.

Structure-Only Mobs

The Reaper (20 HP, 4 damage) floats in the sky and only spawns naturally in one specific biome, but can appear in graveyards. It drops Soul Sand and CorruptionCorruption. The Wraith (27.5 HP, 6.5 damage) only appears when opening a Coffin or SarcophagusSarcophagus in the Crypt — each has a 20% chance to spawn one. Wraiths burn in sunlight and drop nothing. The Acolyte (24 HP, 9 damage via its Bone DaggerBone Dagger) is a dangerous cultist that spawns in Large Graveyards, the Haunted House, and the Crypt, and has roughly a 10% chance to drop a Bone Dagger. Corrupted Pillagers and Corrupted Vindicators (both 24 HP, 5 damage) are fast undead illagers found only in the Crypt.

The Horde Event

Every 24,000 ticks (20 minutes) at night, there is a chance for a Horde to spawn. A Horde is a large group of up to 40 Ghouls, Revenants, and Undead Illagers that converge on the player's location with one goal. The event can spawn at your base, not just in graveyard biomes.

The Horde size, frequency, and composition are all configurable. For players who want a more peaceful experience, the Horde event can be disabled entirely in the config. For those who want more challenge, the group size and spawn frequency can be increased significantly.

The Horde can spawn near your base even if you have lit it up. Keep good armor, weapons, and torches ready at night. A full Horde of 40 undead at once is lethal for players in early-game gear.

Key Materials and Crafting

Corruption

CorruptionCorruption is the mod's primary currency and crafting material. It drops from Ghouls, Revenants, Skeleton Creepers, Nightmares, Reapers, Corrupted Illagers, and Acolytes. It is also found directly in graves. Corruption has two uses: crafting Dark Iron Ingots and trading with the Nameless Hanged NPC for Ominous Bone Staff Fragments (64 Corruption per fragment).

Dark Iron Ingot

Crafted by combining one CorruptionCorruption with one Iron Ingot. Dark Iron Ingots are the building block of the mod's functional items: all Coffin variants require one per recipe, and the SarcophagusSarcophagus, Dark Iron BarsDark Iron Bars, Dark Iron DoorDark Iron Door, Dark Iron TrapdoorDark Iron Trapdoor, Candle HolderCandle Holder, Fire BrazierFire Brazier, and Soul Fire BrazierSoul Fire Brazier all rely on it. Stockpile before building.

Bone Dagger

The only weapon the mod adds. It deals 5 attack damage at 2 attack speed with 131 durability, making it weaker than a stone sword but still enchantable. Its main purpose is ritual use: it is required to fill the Vial of BloodVial of Blood for the boss summoning. Craft it from three Bones in a column, or loot it from Acolytes.

Summoning the Corrupted Champion

The Corrupted Champion is the entombed remnant of a hero fallen to corruptioncorruption, wielding a bone staff crafted from the bones of its victims. Summoning it requires significant preparation and a deliberate ritual — it cannot be triggered by accident.

Summoning Ritual

  1. 1

    Gather the Three Ominous Bone Staff Fragments

    Find all three Ruins variants in forest biomes: the Broken Tower holds the upper fragment, the Bloody Hill holds the middle fragment, and the Campsite holds the lower fragment. Alternatively, purchase all three from the Nameless Hanged at the Dead Tree for 64 CorruptionCorruption each — visit at night to trade.

    Fill the Vial of Blood

    Hold a Glass Bottle in your offhand and kill Villagers using a Bone DaggerBone Dagger. Each kill fills the vial further. Continue until the Vial of BloodVial of Blood is completely full. This is a dark ritual — the mod's lore is built around the moral weight of these actions.

    Find the Lich Prison

    The Lich Prison is a large floating island hovering hundreds of blocks above frozen and deep oceans. Look skyward when sailing — it is easy to miss. The island contains an AltarAltar at its center flanked by large black Corrupted Deepslate blocks that mark where the staff fragments must be placed.

    Place the Staff Fragments at Night

    Wait until nighttime. Place the three Ominous Bone Staff Fragments on the large dark Corrupted Deepslate blocks in front of the AltarAltar — from upper to lower. The placement spots are visually distinct and should stand out. Once all three are in place, right-click the Altar with the full Vial of BloodVial of Blood to begin the fight.

A three-phase boss with custom animations, boss music, and a fully configurable fight. One of the most complex boss encounters available in a vanilla-style exploration mod.

The Boss Fight: Three Phases

Phase 1 — Spell Phase

The Corrupted Champion starts with 400 HP (200 hearts), 30 attack damage (15 hearts), and 14 armor. In this phase it wears its coat and relies on magic attacks: Bone Vortex Attack, Skull Cast Attack, Levitation Spell, Falling Corpses Spell, Summon Minions Spell, and the Labyrinth Heal Attack. During certain spells, an immunity disc surrounds the boss — you cannot deal damage through it. Stop attacking and wait for the disc to drop before resuming.

The Labyrinth Heal Attack is a heal that restores the boss's health if not interrupted. Stay aggressive when the disc is down and interrupt heals when possible. The boss summons Ghouls as minions during this phase — kill them quickly so they do not pile up. Use the stone pillars on the island as cover when dodging spells.

Phase 2 — Hunt Phase

At 200 HP (100 hearts) remaining, the coat comes off and the Champion enters Hunt Phase. The boss becomes completely immune to damage during this phase. It will blind you and teleport you to a random location. Your only goal is to survive. When you hear a loud cracking sound while blinded, the Champion has found you — run immediately. After 800 ticks (40 seconds), the hunt ends and you can attack again.

Phase 2 damage jumps to 70 (35 hearts), which will instantly kill most players without Protection IV armor. Drinking milk removes the Blindness effect and lets you see the Champion approaching. Using a Boat on the open island floor gives you faster movement during the blind sprint.

Phase 3 — Deformation Phase

Once the hunt ends, the Champion enters its final form. It is slower and weaker, but the fight is not over — even fully draining the staff's corruptioncorruption does not end it immediately. Push through to the end. A bow works well here since the boss is slow. Upon death, it drops one of five Bone Staff variants.

The Ghouling Companion

Defeating the Corrupted Champion drops one of five Bone Staff variants: Staff of Zatraq'gulStaff of Zatraq'gul (white), Staff of Nortoq'gulStaff of Nortoq'gul (black), Staff of Azrata'gulStaff of Azrata'gul (red), Staff of Mynakta'gulStaff of Mynakta'gul (cyan), or Staff of Xaphnok'gulStaff of Xaphnok'gul (purple). The staff variant is cosmetic — all five summon the same Ghouling companion.

The Bone Staff is permanently bound to the first player who uses it. In multiplayer, decide ahead of time who will bind each staff — it cannot be transferred to another player afterward. The Ghouling follows its owner automatically, teleports to its master if it falls behind, and can be resummoned after death.

Equipping the Ghouling with a SarcophagusSarcophagus is recommended over a Coffin, as the Sarcophagus has larger storage capacity. Only the staff's owner can access the Ghouling's storage, making it a secure mobile chest. Right-click the Ghouling with either container to equip it.

If your Ghouling disappears after a server restart or in multiplayer, navigate to your world save folder and find the graveyardGhoulingUUIDmapping.txt file. Delete the line with your player name to reset just your staff binding, or delete the entire file to reset all staves on the server.

Decorative Blocks and Storage

Coffins and Sarcophagus

Coffins are craftable in twelve wood variants (Oak, Birch, Spruce, Dark Oak, Jungle, Acacia, Mangrove, Bamboo, Cherry, Crimson, Warped) using eight Planks and one Dark Iron IngotDark Iron Ingot. The SarcophagusSarcophagus uses Cobbled Deepslate in the same layout. Both function as double chest-sized storage. They can also be collected from structures without Silk Touch by breaking them.

Urns

Two urn types exist: Small Urns (craftable from eight Terracotta blocks of any color) and Glazed Urns (craftable from eight Glazed Terracotta of any color). Both are available in all sixteen dye colors. Despite the size difference, both hold the same amount — equal to a double chest by default, though this is configurable. They function as right-click storage and drop their contents when broken without Silk Touch.

Gravestones

Gravestones are craftable in eleven stone material variants: Cobblestone, Mossy Cobblestone, Deepslate, Blackstone, Cracked Polished Blackstone, Stone Bricks, Mossy Stone Bricks, Bricks, Gilded Blackstone, Sandstone, Red Sandstone, and Quartz Bricks. Each requires seven of the material. Place a Gravestone and right-click it to write a custom epitaph — useful for memorializing lost pets.

Dark Iron Blocks and Fixtures

The Dark Iron set includes Dark Iron BarsDark Iron Bars (16 per recipe), Dark Iron DoorDark Iron Door (3 per recipe), Dark Iron TrapdoorDark Iron Trapdoor (2 per recipe), and Dark Iron BlockDark Iron Block (decorative). Fire Braziers and Soul Fire Braziers are lit with Flint and Steel and make excellent atmospheric lighting. Candle Holders each require two Dark Iron Ingots.

Skeleton Decorations and the Ossuary

Skeleton and Wither Skeleton decorative blocks — including Lying Skeleton, Leaning Skeleton, Skull Pile, Skull on Pike, Skeleton Hand, Torso Pile, Hanged Skeleton, and their Wither Skeleton equivalents — are found in structures. They drop four Bones each when broken without Silk Touch. The OssuaryOssuary block is craftable and serves as a conversion station: insert a Bone Block to craft any of the skeleton decoration blocks.

ℹ️Ceramics Cannot Be Crafted

CeramicsCeramics blocks are found only in structures and cannot be picked up with Silk Touch or crafted. Break them to obtain the items inside (seeds, minerals, mob drops). They place like Sea Pickles, meaning multiple can stack in one block.

Configuration

The config file is located at .minecraft/config/graveyard. It covers four main areas: structures, mobs, the Horde event, and the boss fight.

Each structure can be enabled or disabled individually. Mob spawn weight, group size, sunlight burning behavior, and Wither Rose damage response are configurable per mob. The Horde spawn frequency (default: every 24,000 ticks) and maximum group size (default: 40) can be adjusted or the feature disabled entirely. The Corrupted Champion's health, damage, phase configuration, number of summonable minions, and summoning requirements are all tunable. Changing spawn biomes requires a datapack rather than the config file.

Two boolean settings worth noting: urnHasDoubleInventory (default: true) controls whether Urns have double chest capacity, and enableBossMusic (default: true) controls the boss fight music track.

FAQ

How do I get Corruption?

CorruptionCorruption drops from Ghouls, Revenants, Skeleton Creepers, Nightmares, Reapers, Corrupted Pillagers, Corrupted Vindicators, and Acolytes. It is also found directly in graves and graveyard structures. Nightmares drop the most (1-3 per kill), but Ghouls and Revenants are far more common sources.

Why won't the boss summon?

The ritual requires all three conditions to be met simultaneously: the three Ominous Bone Staff Fragments placed on the correct Corrupted Deepslate blocks in front of the AltarAltar, a completely full Vial of BloodVial of Blood in hand, and it must be nighttime. If any condition is missing the Altar will not trigger. The placement spots for the fragments are the large dark blocks directly in front of the Altar — place them from upper to lower.

How do I find the Lich Prison?

The Lich Prison floats hundreds of blocks above frozen oceans and deep oceans. While sailing, look straight up periodically — it is easy to miss because it is far overhead. Bring an Elytra or plenty of building blocks to reach it. Some structures on the island include hidden passages through the two large pillars flanking the AltarAltar, though these do not contain special loot.

My Ghouling disappeared after a server restart — how do I fix it?

Navigate to your world save folder and find the graveyardGhoulingUUIDmapping.txt file. Delete the line containing your player name to reset your specific staff binding, or delete the entire file to reset all staff bindings on the server. After the reset, use the Bone Staff again to resummon your Ghouling.

Does The Graveyard add biomes?

The biomes — Haunted Forest, Haunted Lakes, Eroded Haunted Forest, and Ancient Dead Coral Reef — are now part of a separate companion mod called The Graveyard Biomes. They are not included in the base Graveyard mod and require a separate download if you want the custom biomes.

Can I use the Wraith-spawning coffins in the Crypt to farm?

Each Coffin and SarcophagusSarcophagus in the Crypt has a 20% chance to spawn a Wraith when opened. Wraiths burn in daylight and drop no items — only XP. While they can be used for XP farming in the Crypt, the risk from simultaneous spawns in a confined space makes it dangerous without good armor. The Crypt's natural mob density makes open combat a better XP source than deliberately triggering Wraiths.
